Extensor hallucis longus tendon injury and surgical treatment recommendations are infrequently reported. In contrast to long extensor tendon injuries to the foot, flexor and extensor tendon injuries of the hand have been extensively studied and surgical treatment protocols have been delineated. In biomechanical studies, the Massachusetts General Hospital technique has been shown to have superior strength to other tenorrhaphies and to allow for early active mobilization. The purpose of this study was to examine the use of this technique for repair of extensor hallucis longus tendon injuries to …

Hamstring injuries are among the most common muscle injuries. They have been reported in many different sports, such as running, soccer, tra … ng ruptures. The present study confirms the previous knowledge that surgical treatment of hamstring tendon injuries causes good results with high satisfaction rates, both in complete and partial avulsions. Early surgical repair leads to better functional results with lower complication rates, especially in complete avulsions.KEY MESSAGEsSurgical treatment of hams …

Flexor tendon injuries of the hand are challenging to treat, with open surgical repair causing tissue damage, postoperative edema, and range-of-motion limitations. Minimally invasive endoscopic techniques may address these issues, but no reports describe endoscopic tendon suturing. This IDEAL-D Stage 0 (Preclinical) study presents a cadaveric case report and research protocol for a novel endoscopic flexor tendon repair technique. The case report used the left ring finger of an 88-year-old male cadaver, employing a loop suture technique under endoscopic guidance to visualize and suture tendon e…

The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon in the human body. Because most Achilles tendon injuries take place in sports and there has been a general increase in popularity of sporting activities, the number and incidence of the Achilles tendon overuse injuries and complete, spontaneous ruptures has increased in the industrialized countries during the last decades. The most common clinical diagnosis of Achilles overuse injuries is tendinopathy. The basic etiology of the Achilles tendinopathy is known to be multi-factorial. Although histopathologic studies have shown that ruptured Achilles ten…

The use of diagnostic ultrasonography has greatly enhances our ability to diagnose injuries of tendons and tendon sheaths that were previously either unrecognized or poorly understood. For may of these injuries, there is currently only a small amount of follow-up data. This article considers injuries of the deep digital flexor tendon and its accessory ligament, the carpal tunnel syndrome soft tissue swellings on the dorsal aspect of the carpus, intertubercular (bicipital) bursitis and bicipital tendinitis, injuries of the gastrocnemius tendon, common calcaneal tendinitis, rupture of peroneus (

This study describes the epidemiology of a range of adult musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries. Our institution is the only hospital treating adults with musculoskeletal trauma in a well-defined catchment population of about 535,000. Demographic details over 5 years were recorded prospectively. Eighteen injury types were studied including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture, acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) injury, Achilles, patellar and quadriceps tendon ruptures, hand tendon injuries and mallet finger. 2794 patients presented with ligamentous or tedinous injuries over 5 years. 74.2% of pat…

Ruptures of the quadriceps tendon (QT) are rare but serious injuries accounting for less than 2% of all tendon injuries around the knee. These injuries, often occurring in individuals over 40, are leading to a loss of active extension and a significant impact on knee function. While the treatment of acute QT ruptures through various reinsertion techniques has shown excellent outcomes, managing chronic injuries and failed primary repairs remains challenging due to tendon retraction and difficulties in repositioning the tendon stump. This study introduces a novel approach associating direct tend…

Tendons are fibroblastic structures that link muscle and bone. There are two kinds of tendon injuries, including acute and chronic. Each form of injury or deterioration can result in significant pain and loss of tendon function. The recovery of tendon damage is a complex and time-consuming recovery process. Depending on the anatomical location of the tendon tissue, the clinical outcomes are not the same. The healing of the wound process is divided into three stages that overlap: inflammation, proliferation, and tissue remodeling. Furthermore, the curing tendon has a high re-tear rate. Faced wi…

Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are common, mostly occurring during sports trauma. Conversely, patellar tendon ruptures are uncommon injuries secondary to forceful contractions of the extensor mechanism. It is important to consider the possibility of combined injuries around the knee. We present a case of neglected patellar tendon rupture with anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament rupture treated with arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction combined with patellar tendon reconstruction.

Musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries from athletic activities are common in the rotator cuff tendons, lateral epicondyle of the elbow, the patella tendon, and the Achilles tendon. Despite the fact that the Achilles tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the human body, it is frequently injured in the athletic setting. To study the etiology and pathogenesis of Achilles tendon injuries, our goal was to develop a model of Achilles tendon overuse by evaluating the Achilles tendons from animals subjected to the exercise protocol previously described as overuse for the supraspinatus tendon. W…

It has been reported that the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1800012 in COL1A1 might be associated with the susceptibility to sports-related tendon and ligament injuries such as ACL injuries, Achilles tendon injuries, shoulder dislocations and tennis elbow. But the data from different studies have been conflicting. Here we attempted to systematically summarize and clarify the association between the SNP and sports-related tendon and ligament injuries risk. Six eligible studies including 933 cases and 1,381 controls were acquired from PubMed, Web Of Science and Cochrane library database…

The knee extensor mechanism is composed of the quadriceps tendon, patella and patellar tendon. Rupture of either the quadriceps tendon or patella tendon is a rare but significant injury. The purpose of our study is to determine if there are any associated injuries with these ruptures necessitating the need for further evaluation such as MRI or arthroscopy. We retrospectively reviewed all patients with ruptures of the knee extensor mechanism who required operative repair at our institution over the last 10 years. We reviewed the chart for any documented associated injury. The type and incidence

Injuries of the extensor tendon in zone I are frequently seen. If detected early and treated appropriately they are associated with good functional results. Open injuries are primarily treated surgically by suturing the injured tendon. Closed injuries without bone involvement are treated conservatively. In cases of bone involvement the treatment procedure is determined by the articulation and the extent of fragment displacement. This article presents the current state of knowledge on the diagnostics and treatment of extensor tendon injuries in zone I with the aim of providing treatment recomme…

Abnormalities of the medial ligaments and posterior tibial tendon can occur because of acute injury or chronic instability or malalignment. Medial ankle injuries may occur because of pronation or supination-external rotation injuries. Deltoid ligament injuries have a significant impact on lateral ankle instability but can be overlooked in patients with lateral ligament injuries. Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is usually associated with spring ligament or flexor retinaculum injury. Tarsal tunnel syndrome, accessory flexor muscles, and subtalar coalition should be considered as well as liga

The repair of tendon injuries still presents a major clinical challenge to orthopedic medicine. Tendons, like some other tissues, are poorly vascularized and heal slowly. In addition, healing often leads to the formation of fibrous tissue and scar tissue which lack flexibility and biomechanical properties. So the treatment of tendon injuries is challenging. We give an overview of the structure and composition of tendons, pathological states of tendon and natural healing, as well as therapeutic options. We focus in particular on biomaterials that have been specifically developed or suggested fo…

Ligament/tendon and cartilage injuries are clinically common diseases that perplex most clinicians. Because of the lack of blood vessels and nerves, their self-repairing abilities are rather poor. Therefore, surgeries are necessary and also widely used to treat ligament/tendon or cartilage injuries. However, after surgery, there are still many problems that affect healing. In recent years, it has been found that exogenous FGF2 plays an important role in the repair of ligament/tendon and cartilage injuries and exerts a synergistic effect with endogenous FGF2. Therefore, FGF2 can be used as a ne

Nerve and tendon lacerations of the foot and ankle region are relatively common. Acute nerve and tendon injuries should be repaired with appropriate techniques at the time of initial wound exploration. Primary nerve repair may help minimize the risk of painful neuroma formation; primary tendon repair can lead to better functional results than delayed repair. Most chronic nerve injuries, except those to the tibial nerve or its major divisions, are managed by resection of a painful neuroma and burying the nerve ending in a protected area. Delayed reconstruction of tendon injuries is performed wh…
