Persistent hiccup can conceal life-threatening clinical conditions of highly heterogeneous nature. Here, we report a case of a persistent hiccup that has been temporally associated with dental implant insertion in a patient with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. This paper presents experience with the Broström operation, a relatively unknown surgical procedure for treating chronic instability, pain, and swelling involving the lateral aspect of the ankle. The procedure is indicated in patients unresponsive to conservative therapy. The torn ligament ends are identified and either reapproximated or reattached to the lateral malleolus or talus, depending on the site of original rupture. The syndrome of the rectus abdominis muscle is a disorder of unknown etiology that produces rupture or tear of the epigastric artery, and stretches the rectus cutaneous medialis nerve, producing excruciating pain. BACKGROUND: The thymus gland is a lymphoid organ normally located in the anterior mediastinum. Location abnormalities of the thymus, such as ectopic thymus or the superior herniation of a mediastinal thymus, could be responsible for the occurrence of cervical masses in pediatric patients, raising concerns among clinicians. Nineteen women with acute lower abdominal pain of uncertain etiology underwent diagnostic laparoscopy during a 2-year period from August 1991 to August 1993 and were retrospectively reviewed. The records of 207 patients evaluated and treated for breast abnormalities during a 10-yr period were reviewed. Patients ranged in age from 1 wk through 16 yr. Seventy-eight per cent were female. Operative procedures were performed in 134 patients (64%). Most common diagnoses were fibroadenoma, premature thelarche, and precocious puberty in the females, and pubertal gynecomastia in the males. The value of operative cholangiography in the management of biliary tract disease has been questioned. To better define the role of cholangiography, we reviewed 579 consecutive cholecystectomies done by 1 group of surgeons in a small rural practice over 8 years. Cholangiography demonstrated unsuspected common bile duct disease in 5% of the procedures, while 12% of the patients were spared an unnecessary choledochotomy after a normal cholangiogram was obtained.
