The interdisciplinary symposium of the working group "anemia in the aged" on the occasion of the annual conference of the German Society of Geriatrics focused this year on vitamin B12 deficiency in aged patients. Experts from hematopathology, clinical geriatrics and geriatric hematology presented the case of a 78-year-old woman and an interdisciplinary discussion was held on the epidemiology, clinical aspects as well as diagnostic and therapeutic steps. This article reviews the symposium on vitamin B12 deficiency in the aged in the context of the currently available literature.

OBJECTIVES: Besides the inherited form, vitamin B(12) deficiency may be due to diet restrictions or abnormal absorption. The spread of newborn screening programs worldwide has pointed out that non-inherited conditions are mainly secondary to a maternal deficiency. The aim of our work was to study seven cases of acquired vitamin B12 deficiency detected during our newborn screening project. Moreover, we aimed to evaluate vitamin B(12) and related biochemical parameters status on delivering female to verify the consequences on newborns of eventually altered parameters.

The skin and mucosal changes in vitamin deficiency are described. Pellagra, which is the oldest known cutaneous manifestation among vitamin deficiencies, is reviewed. Cutaneous alterations caused by deficiency of the water-soluble vitamins B6, C, B1 and biotin, B12, folic acid, and riboflavin result in more mucosal alterations and are discussed. Alterations caused by fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies (vitamins A and K) are also considered.

BACKGROUND: DNA damage effects of vitamin B(12) deficiency were performed in vitro and in adults.
METHODS: The study group included 32 children (13 girls, 19 boys) with vitamin B(12) deficiency (mean age 44 ± 58 months) and their 27 mothers (mean age 30.4 ± 5.3 years). The control group contained 30 healthy children and 25 mothers. DNA strand breaks in peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes were assayed by single-cell alkaline gel electrophoresis (comet assay) before and 8 days after the first injection of vitamin B(12).
RESULTS: Mean DNA damage scores in children with vitamin B(12) deficie

Since the introduction of folic acid fortification of flour 10 y ago, an initiative to consider fortifying flour with vitamin B-12 has gained momentum in the United States. The impetus for this move stems from several considerations, including some evidence that a proportion of neural tube defect pregnancies may be the result of vitamin B-12 rather than folate deficiency. However, no interventional trials have taken place to show the efficacy of vitamin B-12 supplementation or fortification in the primary prevention or recurrence of neural tube defect pregnancies, as was the case with folic ac

Introduction: Medical students are particularly susceptible to nutritional deficiencies and mental health problems due to intensive study demands, stress, and lifestyle factors. Vitamin D3, vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies have been implicated in mental well-being, although evidence remains inconsistent. Objective: To assess the prevalence of vitamin D3, vitamin B12, and folate deficiencies among medical students at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, and to explore associations between serum concentrations of these vitamins, lifestyle factors, and self-reported well-being. A simple, rapid and inexpensive cytochemical method for the detection of vitamin B 12 deficiency was applied in several types of anemias and matched with the levels of vitamin B12 and folic acid in the serum of the patients. It was found that in patients with low vitamin B12 levels the stained erythrocytes and the erythroid precursors showed a yellowish brown discoloration, which was not detected in folic acid deficiency and all other types of anemias. This test therefore may be used for differentiation between B12 and folate deficiency whenever megaloblastic anemia is diagnosed.

There are a large number of causes of megaloblastic anaemia. The most frequent are disorders resulting in vitamin B(12) or folate deficiency. The diagnostic process often consists first of establishing the presence of B(12) or folate deficiency and then of determining the cause of deficiency. The blood count, blood film, serum B(12) assay, and red cell and serum folate assays are the primary investigations. Other useful investigations include serum/plasma methylmalonic acid (MMA), plasma total homocysteine (tHCYS) and serum holo-transcobalamin II assays. All currently used tests have limitatio

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 plays a key role in the serotonergic pathway; we predicted that B12 replacement could be beneficial in the treatment of premature ejaculation (PE) in patients with B12 deficiency. We aimed to investigate the response to vitamin B12 replacement in PE patients with vitamin B12 deficiency. METHODS: Between January 2025 and June 2025, a total of 152 individuals were included in this study, comprising 92 patients aged 18–45 who were diagnosed with PE and 60 healthy controls. The blood vitamin B12 levels of all participants were examined. Thirty-four patients with PE who pres

Citrate lyase beta-like protein (CLYBL) is a ubiquitously expressed mammalian enzyme known for its role in the degradation of itaconate, a bactericidal immunometabolite produced in activated macrophages. The association of CLYBL loss of function with reduced circulating vitamin B12 levels was proposed to result from inhibition of the B12-dependent enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase by itaconyl-CoA. The discrepancy between the highly inducible and locally confined production of itaconate and the broad expression profile of CLYBL across tissues suggested a role for this enzyme beyond itaconate cata

Obesity, whose prevalence is increasing globally, is malnutrition that causes micro/macronutrients and vitamin deficiencies in adolescents. Vitamin B12 plays a prominent role in the body systems such as remethylation, deoxidation, and DNA synthesis. We aimed to examine the relationship between severe obese/obese adolescents and vitamin B12 levels in this study. This study was conducted as a case-control study consisting of 44 obese and 40 healthy control adolescents aged 11-17 years. Obesity was diagnosed using body mass index (BMI) charts defined by the World Health Organization according to

BACKGROUND: This systematic review and network meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the three different administration routes of vitamin B12: oral, intramuscular (IM), and sublingual (SL) routes.
METHODS: We searched four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL Register of Controlled Trials). We included only comparative studies. We performed a frequentist network meta-analysis to measure network estimates for the relative outcomes. Moreover, we conducted a pairwise meta-analysis using a random effect model to obtain direct estimates for outcomes. All outcomes we

BACKGROUND: The inconsistent relationship between Vitamin B12 (B12), methylmalonic acid (MMA, marker of B12 deficiency) and mortality was poorly understood, especially in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). This study aims to investigate the association of serum MMA, and B12-related biomarkers (serum level, dietary intake, supplement use, and sensibility to B12) with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in adults with CHD.
METHODS: The data of this study were from a subcohort within the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). We included adults with preexisting
