A new quantitative method for evaluating freezing of gait and dual-attention task deficits in Parkinson's disease.

People with Parkinson's disease (PD) can exhibit disabling gait symptoms such as freezing of gait especially when distracted by a secondary task. Quantitative measurement method of this type of cognitive-motor abnormality, however, remains poorly developed. Here we examined whether stepping-in-place (SIP) with a concurrent mental task (e.g., subtraction) can be used as a simple method for evaluating cognitive-motor deficits in PD. We used a 4th generation iPod Touch sensor system to capture hip flexion data and obtain step height (SH) measurements (z axis). The accuracy of the method was compa

In-orbit experiment of 48-hour error-free FSO communication enabled by an effective DFS compensation in a cross-orbital satellite link.

Inter-satellite optical wireless communications (ISOWC) has emerged as an enabling technology for next-generation satellite internet constellations and so has attracted a great of deal interest from the research community. However, establishing stable free-space optical (FSO) links over several thousand kilometers entails challenges due to instabilities and uncertainties in the optical beam pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT). Furthermore, compared to co-orbital communications, cross-orbital satellites experience greater relative motion, requiring inter-satellite FSO systems to overcome

Current advances in neuromodulation techniques in urology practices: A review of literature.

Neuromodulation has become a valid therapeutic option for patients with various lower urinary tract disorders. In clinical practice, the most used and recommended neuromodulation techniques are sacral neuromodulation (SNM), pudendal neuromodulation (PN), and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS). There are many theories concerning the mechanism of action of neuromodulation. Although SNM, PN, and PTNS show their activities through different nerve roots, all provide central and peripheral nervous system modulations. SNM has been approved for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB), nono

Bilateral comparison of traditional and alternate electrodermal measurement sites.

Advances in mobile and wireless technology have expanded the scope of electrodermal research. Since traditional electrodermal measurement sites are not always suitable for laboratory research and are rarely appropriate for ambulatory measurements, there is a need to explore and contrast alternate measurement locations. We evaluated bilateral electrodermal activity (EDA) from five measurement sites (fingers, feet, wrists, shoulders, and calves). In a counterbalanced, randomized, within-subjects design study, participants (N = 115) engaged in a 4-min-long breathing exercise and were exposed to e…

Prediction of Diabetic Foot Ulceration: The Value of Using Microclimate Sensor Arrays.

BACKGROUND: Accurately predicting the risk of diabetic foot ulceration (DFU) could dramatically reduce the enormous burden of chronic wound management and amputation. Yet, the current prognostic models are unable to precisely predict DFU events. Typically, efforts have focused on individual factors like temperature, pressure, or shear rather than the overall foot microclimate. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted by searching PubMed reports with no restrictions on start date covering the literature published until February 20, 2019 using relevant keywords, including temperature, pressur

A fully implantable telemetry system for the chronic monitoring of brain tissue oxygen in freely moving rats.

The ability to monitor tissue oxygen concentration in a specific region of the brain in a freely moving animal could provide a new paradigm in neuroscience research. We have developed a fully implantable telemetry system for the continuous and chronic recording of brain tissue oxygen (PO(2,BR)) in conscious animals. A telemetry system with a sampling rate of 2kHz was combined with a miniaturized potentiostat to amperiometrically detect oxygen concentration with carbon paste electrodes. Wireless power was employed to recharge the telemeter battery transcutaneously for potential lifetime monitor

Strain-isolated microneedles for ambulatory hormonal and metabolic monitoring.

Hormones and metabolites jointly regulate physiology yet their dynamic interplay remains difficult to resolve due to the lack of technologies for continuous, multiplexed monitoring. Microneedle biosensors that access dermal interstitial fluid offer a minimally invasive approach to molecular profiling, but deployment is limited by trade-offs between fabrication scalability and precision, and by mechanical instability under skin deformation. Here we present a strain-isolated microneedle platform fabricated by combining two-photon polymerization with ultrasound-assisted moulding, enabling scalabl

IoMT-enabled implant sensors for early detection of neurovascular complications in craniofacial distraction osteogenesis.

Craniofacial distraction osteogenesis (DO) is an established surgical technique for correcting complex craniofacial deformities and managing upper airway obstruction. Neurovascular complications, including injury to the inferior alveolar, infraorbital, and facial nerves, are recognized risks of the procedure. Current postoperative surveillance depends on periodic clinical examination and interval imaging, neither of which provides continuous insight into the mechanical forces transmitted to adjacent neurovascular structures during the active distraction phase. This letter examines whether impl

Wearable Biosensors for Continuous Monitoring of Chronic Kidney Disease: Materials, Biofluids, and Digital Health Integration.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive and irreversible disorder affecting over 850 million individuals globally and is associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare burden. Conventional diagnostic approaches rely on intermittent laboratory measurements, including serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and urinary albumin, which provide limited temporal resolution and fail to capture dynamic physiological changes. Recent advances in wearable biosensing technologies offer new opportunities for continuous, non-invasive monitoring of biochemical a

A smart nail platform for wireless subsoil health monitoring via unmanned aerial vehicle-assisted radio frequency interrogation.

Monitoring subsoil conditions across large agricultural areas is essential for optimizing resource use and supporting sustainable crop production. However, most existing sensing systems rely on battery-powered electronics that are costly, require maintenance, and are difficult to scale. To address these limitations, we introduce HARVEST (Hybrid Antenna for Radio frequency-enhanced Volumetric water content and Electrical conductivity-based Soil Tracking), a low-cost, wireless platform that eliminates the need for onboard electronics. HARVEST uses nail-shaped sensing probes physically and electr
