AIM: Many studies are available in the literature on posterior spinal instrumentation, though the use of a rod and a plate is still controversial in the literature. In this study, a finite element analysis of the strength and superiority of modular rigid plate and rod systems, which are used in the lower lumbar region, in comparison with each other was used.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A Ti6Al4V (Grade 5) titanium biocompatible alloy anterior plate was used for the lumbar spine fixation device, and a finite element analysis was conducted on the human lumbar spine model. In this study, an intact spi

INTRODUCTION: Open reduction in displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures entails a high rate of wound healing deficits and infections as well as an uncertain outcome, which leads to remaining ambiguity in treatment preferences.
METHODS: Between January and July 2011, we emailed 575 German chairpersons of trauma and/or orthopaedic departments, asking them to complete a 31-question web-based survey regarding three broad domains: fracture classification, surgical treatment algorithms and risk factors for wound healing deficits.
RESULTS: The response rate was 47 %. With an incidence of 77 %

Locking plate fixation is becoming more popular for fixation of lower extremity osteotomies. The present study evaluated locking plate fixation compared with screw fixation in the medial displacement calcaneal osteotomy procedure, measuring the outcomes and rate of hardware removal. The procedure was performed on 30 patients, 31 times, with 17 undergoing single screw fixation and 14 undergoing locking plate fixation. The return to activity was 6.87 ± 1.43 months, including some patients for whom running was their main activity. No malunions, nonunions, displacements, or infections developed. I

To explore the clinical effect of internal fixation treatment of intra-articular calcaneal fractures with titanium plate, we used open reduction and internal fixation with titanium plate to 48 treated feet from 42 patients with intra-articular calcaneal fractures. The efficacy of surgical treatment was evaluated based on assessment of pain, function, and line of force aspects according to the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society scoring system. Our data show that internal fixation with titanium plate is an effective treatment for calcaneal fractures. It provides satisfactory reduction, r

Malaligned knees are predisposed to the development and progression of unicompartmental degenerations because of the excessive load placed on one side of the knee. Therefore, guided growth in skeletally immature patients is recommended. Indication for correction of varus/valgus deformities are based on static weight bearing radiographs. However, the dynamic knee abduction moment during walking showed only a weak correlation to malalignment determined by static radiographs. Therefore, the aim of the study was to measure the effects of guided growth on the normalization of frontal plane knee joi

The authors report dualplate fixation technique for providing stable fixation in comminuted proximal humerus fractures. This technique has been used for proximal humerus fractures with metaphyseal comminution and provides excellent anatomical reduction and neck shaft angle (NSA). The recently locking plate is clinically more widely used due to its small size, low rigidity, high elasticity, and biomechanical properties such as fixed initial angle and rotational stability. However, in severely comminuted complex type proximal metaphyseal humerus fractures, the use of locking plate alone does not

Osteoarthritis of the knee secondary to femoral fracture is difficult to treat. There are some surgical options, such as total knee arthroplasty or correction osteotomy. Opening wedge high tibial osteotomy is an established treatment of gonarthrosis. However, few reports are available on the effectiveness of a medial opening wedge distal femoral osteotomy. We present a case of a medial opening wedge distal femoral osteotomy on gonarthrosis secondary to a malunited femoral fracture with varus deformity and leg length discrepancy. This osteotomy was performed at the deformed femur, with locking

Numerous angular stable plates for the distal radius exist, and technically based comparisons of the polyaxial locking interfaces are lacking. The aim of this mechanical study was to investigate three different locking interfaces of angular stable volar plates by cantilever bending: VA-LCP Two-Column Distal Radius Plates 2.4 mm (Synthes® GmbH, Oberdorf, Switzerland), IXOS® P4 (Martin, Tuttlingen, Germany) and VariAX™ (Stryker®, Duisburg, Germany). We assessed the strength of 0°, 5°, 10° and 15° screw locking angles and tested the bending strength from 10° to 5° angles by cyclic loading until b

Volar fixed-angle plates (VFAP) are currently widely used for the treatment of extra-articular distal radius fractures. Using these plates has a high risk of articular and dorsal screw protrusion due to their special configuration. The aim of this study is to assess the validity of the standard X-rays, performed with the help of wedged supports, in order to detect articular and dorsal screw protrusion. A comparison with computed tomography (CT) scan imaging has been made. The outcome of 26 patients with distal radius articular fracture, treated with a VFAP, is reported. Good correlation betwee

We describe our experience with a two-incision anterolateral acromial approach in locking plate fixation of proximal humeral fractures in older adults. Mean time between injury and surgery was 3.08 +/- 1.24 days. A proximal anterolateral transverse incision and a more distal longitudinal incision were used. A locking plate was inserted along the lateral side of the humerus from the proximal incision to the distal fragment of the humerus. Mean operation time was 62.37 +/- 19.05 minutes. There were no instances of axillary nerve paralysis or infection. Postoperative imaging results were satisfac

INTRODUCTION: Open reduction and internal fixation of sacroiliac (SI) joint is often performed through an anterior approach. However, there were no studies to our knowledge which described the "at risk area" for injury to the nutrient artery as it relates to open reduction and internal fixation of the SI joint. The purpose of this study was to determine the "at risk area" for the nutrient artery during anterior surgical approaches to the SI joint and to define the safe location of the plate for SI joint fixation.

We evaluated the biomechanical properties of two different methods of fixation for unstable fractures of the proximal humerus. Biomechanical testing of the two groups, locking plate alone (LP), and locking plate with a fibular strut graft (LPSG), was performed using seven pairs of human cadaveric humeri. Cyclical loads between 10 N and 80 N at 5 Hz were applied for 1,000,000 cycles. Immediately after cycling, an increasing axial load was applied at a rate of displacement of 5 mm/min. The displacement of the construct, maximum failure load, stiffness and mode of failure were compared. The displ
