Correlating brain metabolism with stereotypic and locomotor behavior.

Many studies have shown that developmental cocaine exposure alters brain function and behavior, the present study examined the relationship between brain metabolism and behavioral responses to drug challenge. SKF 82958, a selective D1 dopamine agonist, was administered to preweaning cocaine-exposed (50 mg/kg/day) rats and controls at 60 days of age. Deoxyglucose was administered 30 min later, during the peak behavioral response, to measure brain functional activity. Pearsonproduct-moment correlations of behavior (locomotor activity and stereotypic behavior) with rates of glucose metabolism in …

Pulmonary arteriovenous fistula presenting as multiple brain abscess.

Pulmonary arteriovenous fisula is a rare condition in which there is abnormal connection between pulmonary arteries and veins. We describe this condition is an 18-year-old male who presented with cyanosis, clubbing, polycythemia and multiple brain abscesses. The patient was diagnosed as pulmonary arteriovenous fistula based on CT scan and on pulmonary angiography. The patient had a complete recovery after surgical drainage of brain abscess and excision of right upper lobe. After one year of follow up, there are no symptoms and there is complete reversal of cyanosis and polycythemia.

Vestibular input to brain monoamine neurons--a review.

Yates et al. reported that serotonergic RN neurons are associated with vestibulo-sympathetic responses and may control BP changes during body repositioning (Yates et al., 1992; 1993). Pompeiano et al. demonstrated that LC-NA neurons participate in the postural control and modify the vestibulo-spinal reflex (Pompeiano et al., 1990; 1991a; 2001). Nishiike et al. (1996a) examined the effects of caloric vestibular stimulation on the neuronal activity of LC-NA neurons in rats. The predominant effect of CA with both hot- and cold-water on the electrical activity of LC neurons is inhibitory and persi

Social neuroscience, empathy, brain integration, and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Paul MacLean has investigated integrated brain functioning through selected brain lesions in animals that disturb circuits necessary for complex behaviors, such as social displays. MacLean is unique in his comparative neurobehavioral approach that emphasizes the evolutionary origins of parenting and social behaviors and the implications of brain changes in the evolution from reptiles (social displays) to mammals (nursing, audiovocal communication, play) to man (self-awareness, intentionality, social context) that link affect and cognition. Subjectively, how "looking with feeling toward others,…

Intraventricular rupture of Nocardia brain abscess--case report.

A 71-year-old male presented with left hemiparesis and confused conversation. Computed tomography showed a mass lesion with rim enhancement in the right parietal lobe. He developed meningeal irritation the day after admission. Emergent fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging revealed a clear hyperintense component in the right lateral ventricle and niveau formation inside the intracerebral lesion, indicating intraventricular rupture of the brain abscess. The patient underwent aspiration of the abscess and ventricular drainage with antibiotic administration. …

Acanthamoeba interactions with human brain microvascular endothelial cells.

Acanthamoeba are opportunistic protozoan parasites that can cause fatal granulomatous amoebic encephalitis, however, the pathogenic mechanisms associated with this disease remain unclear. One of the primary factors in Acanthamoeba encephalitis is the haematogenous spread, followed by invasion of the blood-brain barrier resulting in the transmigration of Acanthamoeba into the central nervous system. In this study, we have used human brain microvascular endothelial cells, which constitute the blood-brain barrier and studied their interactions with Acanthamoeba. Using in vitro cultures, we showed…

Statistical analysis of multiplex brain gene expression images.

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to investigate 9,000 gene expression patterns from brains of both normal mice and mice with a pharmacological model of Parkinson's disease (PD). The data set was obtained using voxelation, a method that allows high-throughput acquisition of 3D gene expression patterns through analysis of spatially registered voxels (cubes). This method produces multiple volumetric maps of gene expression analogous to the images reconstructed in biomedical imaging systems. The ANOVA model was compared to the results from singular value decomposition (SVD) by using the f…

Brain anatomy and sensorimotor gating in Asperger's syndrome.

Asperger's syndrome (an autistic disorder) is characterized by stereotyped and obsessional behaviours, and pervasive abnormalities in socio-emotional and communicative behaviour. These symptoms lead to social exclusion and a significant healthcare burden; however, their neurobiological basis is poorly understood. There are few studies on brain anatomy of Asperger's syndrome, and no focal anatomical abnormality has been reliably reported from brain imaging studies of autism, although there is increasing evidence for differences in limbic circuits. These brain regions are important in sensorimot…

Hypoxic-ischemic oligodendroglial injury in neonatal rat brain.

Neonatal periventricular white matter injury is a major contributor to chronic neurologic dysfunction. In a neonatal rat stroke model, myelin basic protein (MBP) immunostaining reveals acute periventricular white matter injury. Yet, the extent to which myelin proteins can recover after neonatal hypoxic-ischemic injury is unknown. We developed a quantitative method to correlate the severity of the hypoxic-ischemic insult with the magnitude of loss of MBP immunostaining. Seven-day-old (P7) rats underwent right carotid ligation, followed by exposure to 8% oxygen for 1, 1.5, 2, or 2.5 h. On both P

Interleukin-18 involvement in hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

Inflammation is a critical factor for development of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury. Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed in microglia and processed by caspase-1. Our aim was to characterize the expression of IL-18 and its receptor in relation to caspase-1 and IL-1beta after HI and to evaluate to what extent IL-18 contributes to HI brain injury. Seven-day-old rats were subjected to HI, and brain tissue was sampled at different time points (3 hr to 14 d) after insult. The mRNA for IL-18 and caspase-1 were analyzed with reverse transcriptase PCR, protein was analyze…

Calcium precipitation in acute and chronic brain diseases.

In rat brain, calcification associated with excitotoxicity has been proposed to play a protective role, whereas in human brain, nonartherosclerotic calcification is present in several pathological conditions without any clear significance. To determine if calcification can be viewed as a protective step of calcium homeostasis during chronic and acute neuronal suffering, cerebral cortex and hippocampus of patients with Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and neonatal hypoxia-ischemia were investigated. To investigate the human specificity, these two areas were also studied in dogs with estab…

[Management of brain edema in acute head injury].

BACKGROUND: We aim was to review the basic concepts and to analyze the current management of cerebral edema following acute head trauma (AHT). METHOD: Cerebral edema should be recognized and treated early and aggressively to avoid disastrous results such as cerebral herniation. After clinical evaluation and early cardiorespiratory stabilization, the patients should be treated with the elevation of head, oxygen, mannitol, hyperventilation, and sedation-myorelaxation and may avoid from hypotension-hypoxia. If these treatments be unsuccessful, barbiturates may be used. There are also other possi

Drug-induced apoptotic neurodegeneration in the developing brain.

Physiological cell death (PCD), a process by which redundant or unsuccessful neurons are deleted by apoptosis (cell suicide) from the develo … period of synaptogenesis, trigger widespread apoptotic neurodegeneration throughout the developing brain. In addition, we have found that ethanol, which has both NMDA antagonist and GABAmimetic properties, triggers a robust pattern of apoptotic neurodegeneration, thereby deleting large numbers of neurons from many different regions of the developing br …

Effects of intrauterine inflammation on developing rat brain.

Damage to the white matter in the brain during development can lead to cerebral palsy (CP), a heterogeneous group of clinical syndromes that results in life-long disorders of movement and posture. Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is a pathological process within the white matter characterized by oligodendrocyte loss and is associated with the development of CP. Clinically, CP and PVL are associated with intrauterine infection and inflammation, but mechanisms involved are not well understood. We developed a model of intrauterine inflammation in Lewis and Fischer 344 rats to study the effects …

Linguistic outcomes following traumatic brain injury in children.

Recent studies of outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) emphasize the adverse effect of diffuse brain injury on linguistic development. This article reviews studies of lexical development, discourse processes, and reading in children and adolescents with TBI. The child's developmental level at the time of injury is related to the pattern of deficits. Young children who sustain severe TBI are particularly vulnerable to linguistic deficits at both lexical and discourse levels. TBI in older children and adolescents preferentially disrupts higher-order discourse functions. The contribution of…

Experimental hyperphenylalaninemia provokes oxidative stress in rat brain.

Tissue accumulation of L-phenylalanine (Phe) is the biochemical hallmark of human phenylketonuria (PKU), an inherited metabolic disorder clinically characterized by mental retardation and other neurological features. The mechanisms of brain damage observed in this disorder are poorly understood. In the present study we investigated some oxidative stress parameters in the brain of rats with experimental hyperphenylalaninemia. Chemiluminescence, total radical-trapping antioxidant potential (TRAP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were meas…
