A Common Network of Emotional Processing Recovery Across Four Psychiatric Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal emotional processing serves as a common deficit across psychiatric disorders and is a primary target of pharmacotherapy. However, the neuroimaging findings underlying emotion processing recovery (EPR) are heterogeneous, hampering the development of new therapies. METHODS: Here, we reviewed neuroimaging studies of pharmacotherapy in psychiatric disorders, focusing on brain activation associated with pharmacotherapy-induced EPR. Using a novel therapeutic network mapping approach with a functional connectome dataset (N = 652), we tested whether the identified brain activatio

Sleep Complaints Among Adults With Major Depressive Episode Are Associated With Increased Risk of Incident Psychiatric Disorders: Results From a Population-Based 3-Year Prospective Study.

Objective: Sleep alterations have been suggested as a cause and consequence of psychiatric disorders. In this context, we evaluated the incidence of psychiatric disorders following sleep complaints in adults with major depressive episode (MDE). Methods: In a large, nationally representative 3-year prospective survey, the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions conducted in 2001-2002 (Wave 1) and 2004-2005 (Wave 2), we used structural equation modeling to examine shared and specific effects of trouble falling asleep, early morning awakening, and hypersomnia on incidence

Epidemiology of anxiety disorders.

This chapter presents an overview of the descriptive epidemiology of anxiety disorders based on recently completed surveys of the general population. The overall prevalence of anxiety disorders is shown to be quite high, but with considerable variation from the most prevalent (specific phobias) to the least prevalent (agoraphobia without a history of panic disorder) disorders. Age-of-onset (AOO) of anxiety disorders is typically in childhood or adolescence and the course is often chronic-recurrent. Anxiety disorders are highly comorbid with each other and with other mental disorders. Because o

Personality characteristics of adults with autism spectrum disorders or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder with and without substance use disorders.

We examined temperament and character profiles of 128 adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Participants completed the abbreviated Temperament and Character Inventory. The ASD and ADHD groups showed distinct temperament profiles (ADHD: high novelty seeking, ASD: low reward dependence, high harm avoidance) and low character scores in both groups. We then stratified ASD and ADHD into current substance use disorder (SUD+), former (SUD;), or no history of Substance Use Disorder (SUD-). Novelty seeking and reward dependence were only sign

Typology of common psychiatric syndromes. An empirical study.

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic comorbidity is prevalent in psychiatry and may be inadequately captured by the DSM-III/III-R nosology. METHODS: The lifetime presence of II psychiatric diagnoses was determined by structured personal interviews of a population-based sample of 1898 female twins. We used latent class analysis to derive an empirical typology. RESULTS: Six classes provided the best fit to the data. Their mnemonics were: minimal disorder (60% of the sample), major depression-generalised anxiety disorder (19%), alcohol-nicotine (7%), highly comorbid major depression (5%) and eating disorders

Panic disorder with familial bipolar disorder.

If bipolar disorder is genetically heterogeneous, it may be possible to discern clinically heterogeneous familial subtypes based on differential risk for psychiatric comorbidity, for example panic disorder. We evaluated 528 members of 57 families ascertained for a genetic linkage study of bipolar disorder. Families were assorted according to the panic disorder diagnosis of the bipolar proband; the rates of panic and other disorders in relatives were compared. Eighty-eight percent of the 41 subjects with panic disorder had bipolar disorder. Panic disorder was diagnosed in 18% of family members

[New medico-meteorological results in mental patients].

Over a period of 13 years the dates of hospitalization of 17,268 psychically sick persons were correlated with the decimal weather classification. Schizophrenics and neurotic depressives were affected particularly by warm westerly weather conditions, exhaustion and involution depressives and psychopaths by easterly weather conditions. Alcoholics and neurotics are more irritated by unsettled weather conditions, drug addicts by weather conditions with warm air advection from the southwest. In schizophrenics, high warm air advections in front of a belt of low pressure are of particular importance

Predictors of therapeutic response to psychedelic-assisted therapy: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Psychedelic-assisted therapy (PAT) has demonstrated substantial efficacy across a range of mental disorders. However, heterogeneity between patients confers differential responsiveness. This systematic review aims to explore factors which may predict therapeutic responses to PAT. METHODS: A systematic search was performed from inception through to March 2024 and studies that assessed predictors of response related to the use of classic psychedelics for mental disorders were included. RESULTS: A total of 54 studies investigating potential predictors of treatment response to psyche

Fibromyalgia: an overview.

Fibromyalgia is the diagnosis given to individuals with chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain for which no alternative cause, such as tissue inflammation or damage, can be identified. Fibromyalgia is now believed to be, at least in part, a disorder of central pain processing that produces heightened responses to painful stimuli (hyperalgesia) and painful responses to nonpainful stimuli (allodynia). Aberrations in central pain processing may also be partly responsible for symptoms experienced in several chronic pain disorders that coaggregate with fibromyalgia, which is itself a product of ge

Climate Change and Emergency Medicine: A Scoping Review Across Emergency Medicine Subspecialties.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is reshaping emergency medicine (EM) practice through rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and deteriorating air quality. Emergency medicine serves as a critical frontline indicator for climate-sensitive health conditions, yet evidence describing climate impacts across EM subspecialties remains fragmented. This scoping review synthesizes existing literature at the intersection of climate change and EM to identify key findings, knowledge gaps, and priorities for building climate-resilient emergency care systems. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review with r

Opioid analgesic use and its sequelae: Opioid and other substance use disorders.

OBJECTIVES: While use of opioids is a well-established risk factor for opioid use disorder (OUD), its association with lifetime use of other addictive substances and the emergence of other lifetime substance use disorders (SUDs) has not been studied. METHODS: We used data from 36 309 US adults in the 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions III to identify those with lifetime opioid use (n = 4090; 11.3%). Of these individuals, we quantified use of other addictive substances; development of OUD and other SUDs; and whether use of opioids and development of OUD c

A behavioral economic analysis of the nonmedical use of prescription drugs among young adults.

The nonmedical use of prescription drugs is a widely recognized public health issue, and young adults are particularly vulnerable to their use. Behavioral economic drug purchase tasks capture an individual's strength of desire and motivation for a particular drug. We examined young adult prescription drug purchase and consumption patterns using hypothetical behavioral economic purchase tasks for prescription sedatives/tranquilizers, stimulants, and opiate pain relievers. We also examined relations between demand, use frequency, and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.

History of co-occurring disorders and current mental health status among homeless veterans.

BACKGROUND: Homeless veterans are at high risk for co-occurring disorders (COD), defined as mental illnesses that include at least one alcohol or other drug use disorder and at least one non-drug related mental disorder. However, epidemiological studies examining the prevalence of COD and associated mental health status in this population are limited. The objectives of the study were: (1) to describe a history of diagnosed mental disorders among homeless veterans admitted to a transitional housing program, and (2) to examine the associations of the prior diagnosed COD and other mental disorder

Lifetime Doctor-Diagnosed Mental Health Conditions and Current Substance Use Among Gay and Bisexual Men Living in Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Studies have found that gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) have higher rates of mental health conditions and substance use than heterosexual men, but are limited by issues of representativeness. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and correlates of mental health disorders among GBM in Metro Vancouver, Canada. METHODS: From 2012 to 2014, the Momentum Health Study recruited GBM (≥16 years) via respondent-driven sampling (RDS) to estimate population parameters. Computer-assisted self-interviews (CASI) collected demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral info

Co-occurring psychiatric and drug use disorders among sexual minority men with lifetime alcohol use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence indicates multiple health risks associated with harmful alcohol use among sexual minority men in the United States. In particular, sexual minority men with alcohol use disorders (AUD) might have greater co-occurring health problems compared with heterosexual men. We used nationally representative data to compare the prevalence of diagnostic co-occurring psychiatric disorders and drug use disorders (DUD) among sexual minority men with AUD compared with heterosexual males with a lifetime AUD diagnosis. METHODS: We analyzed data from 6899 adult males with AUD partic

Patterns of prescription opioid abuse and comorbidity in an aging treatment population.

Very little is known about the impact of age and gender on drug abuse treatment needs. To examine this, we recruited 2,573 opioid-dependent patients, aged from 18 to 75 years, entering treatment across the country from 2008 to 2010 to complete a self-administered survey examining drug use histories and the extent of comorbid psychiatric and physical disorders. Moderate to very severe pain and psychiatric disorders, including polysubstance abuse, were present in a significant fraction of 18- to 24-year-olds, but their severity grew exponentially as a function of age: 75% of those older than 45

Substance abuse and psychosocial impairments among clients with schizophrenia.

Substance abuse is one of the most common comorbid conditions among clients with schizophrenia. This study assessed correlates of current substance abuse severity not evaluated in past research (e.g., manic symptoms, traumatic stress, self-care deficits, interpersonal relationship problems), as well as factors previously shown to be associated with substance abuse among clients with schizophrenia (e.g., age, gender, depressive symptoms, psychotic symptoms, work/school problems, legal problems). Multiple regression analyses revealed that more severe self-care deficits and less extreme psychotic

Cocaine and amphetamine use in patients with psychiatric illness: a randomized trial of typical antipsychotic continuation or discontinuation.

Animal studies indicate that typical antipsychotics (neuroleptics) increase cocaine and amphetamine self-administration. Patients with psychiatric illnesses have high rates of substance abuse and frequently receive chronic typical antipsychotic therapy. This open, pilot study examined the effect of typical antipsychotic discontinuation on cocaine and amphetamine use in patients with psychiatric illnesses. Twenty-four evaluable outpatients were randomized to continue (n = 12) or discontinue (n = 12) chronic typical antipsychotic therapy. The atypical antipsychotic quetiapine was instituted, whe
