[The role of the otoneurological method in early diagnosis of multiple sclerosis].

Complete vestibulometric, audiological and otoneurological examinations were made in 48 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Central cochlear-vestibular syndrome was diagnosed in all the examinees. The otoneurological examination and comparison of changes in the acoustic and vestibular functions revealed specific symptoms characteristic for demyelinating disease of the central parts of the cochleovestibular analyzer. MR-tomography visualization of the demyelination foci in the brain confirmed affection of the cochleovestibular analyzer.

[Evoked potentials in parkinsonism].

Evoked potentials (EP) were analysed in patients with idiopathic form of Parkinson's disease (PD) in terms of three modalities: visual EP of chess pattern, acoustic EP of brain stem and somato-sensory EP during stimulation of median and tibial nerves. The data were compared with clinical characteristics. The conclusion was drawn about evident participation of afferent systems in PD development which is apparently secondary.

[The role of paracentesis in treating acute otitis media in young children].

The study was made of paracentesis efficacy in functional recovery of the acoustic tubes and tympanic membrane in infants with catarrhal and purulent otitis media acuta. Although the procedure had an insignificant effect on the rate of the tubal functional recovery, formation of big scars on the tympanic membrane was registered at dynamic otoscopy and impedancemetry in one case only. Paracentesis is recommended in diagnosis of perforation-free inflammations of the middle ear in infants.

Malignant degeneration of an epidermoid of the temporal bone.

An epidermoid (congenital cholesteatoma) in the CPA is similar to an acoustic neuroma but can often be differentiated by a normal internal auditory canal and increased radiolucent areas on CT scan. The presence of an atypical lesion on the CPA is suggestive of a metastatic lesion and warrants careful evaluation for an occult primary lesion prior to resection. Despite increasingly sophisticated techniques for removal of these lesions, the possibility of complete resection is slim and the ultimate prognosis is poor.

Inner ear disease characterized by rolling in C3H mice.

A neurologic disease characterized by rolling developed in C3H mice. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated from the middle and internal ears or meninges of affected mice. The principal pathologic finding was aggressive, primary, purulent otitis media, with extension to the inner ear, acoustic nerve, and meninges. Stresses that may have contributed to induction of the disease were not delineated; however, acidification of the drinking water resulted in near elimination of the disease.

Hearing rehabilitation in patients with vestibular schwannomas.

Hearing loss affects 95% of patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS), either because of the disease or its treatment. In untreated tumors, hearing loss is usually progressive but can be sudden and profound in up to 10%. In neurofibromatosis type 2-related schwannomatosis (NF2), where bilateral VS are almost universal, bilateral hearing loss has a greater impact on quality of life than any other factor. Hearing loss may result from vascular compromise of the cochlea, direct damage to the cochlear nerve by the tumor, direct growth of tumor into the cochlea, distortion of the cochlear nucleus by

Clinical practice guideline on the management of vestibular schwannoma.

INTRODUCTION: Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is the most common tumour of the cerebellopontine angle. The greater accessibility to radiological tests has increased its diagnosis. Taking into account the characteristics of the tumour, the symptoms and the age of the patient, three therapeutic strategies have been proposed: observation, surgery or radiotherapy. Choosing the most appropriate for each patient is a frequent source of controversy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This paper includes an exhaustive literature review of issues related to VS that can serve as a clinical guide in the management of pat

Sense and Sensibility: A Review of the Behavioral Neuroscience of Tinnitus Sound Therapy and a New Typology.

Tinnitus Sound Therapy is not a single strategy. It consists of many different sound types, targeting many different mechanisms. Therapies that use sound to cover, reduce attention to, or facilitate habituation of tinnitus are among the most common tinnitus treatment paradigms. Recent history has seen a proliferation of sound therapies, but they have each been criticized for having limited empirical support. In this review, Sound Therapy's modern history will be described, and a typology will be introduced and discussed in light of current behavioral neuroscience research. It will be argued th

Determinants of Vestibular Schwannoma Growth.

OBJECTIVE: Management of vestibular schwannomas (VS) involves surgery, radiotherapy, or surveillance, based on patient and tumor factors. We recently described conditional probability as a more accurate method for stratifying VS growth risk. Building on this, we now describe determinants of VS growth, allowing clinicians to move toward a more personalized approach to growth-risk profiling. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of a prospectively collected database in a tertiary referral skull base unit between 2005 and 2014. Inclusion of patients with unilateral VS managed on surveillance protocol

A Review of Drug Therapy in Vestibular Schwannoma.

Vestibular schwannomas (VSs, also known as acoustic neuromas) are benign intracranial tumors commonly managed with observation, surgery, and radiotherapy. There is currently no approved pharmacotherapy for VS patients, which is why we conducted a detailed search of relevant literature from PubMed and Web of Science to explore recent advances and experiences in drug therapy. VSs feature a long course of disease that requires treatment to have minimal long-term side effects. Conventional chemotherapeutic agents are characterized by neurotoxicity or ototoxicity, poor effect on slow-growing tumors

The evolution of drum modes with strike intensity: Analysis and synthesis using the discrete cosine transform.

The synthesis of convincing acoustic drum sounds remains an open problem. In this paper, a method for analysing and synthesising pitch glide in drums is proposed, whereby the discrete cosine transform (DCT) of an unwindowed drum sound is modelled. This is an extension of the scheme initially proposed by Kirby and Sandler [(2020). Proceedings of the 23rd International Conference on Digital Audio Effects, Vienna, Austria, pp. 155-162], which was able to reproduce key components of drum sounds accurately enough that they could not be distinguished from the reference samples. Here, drum modes were

Vestibular Schwannoma: What We Know and Where We are Heading.

Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is a Schwann cell-derived tumour arising from the vestibulocochlear nerve. Although benign, it represents a threat to intracranial structures due to mass effect and carries a small risk of malignant transformation. VS therefore represents an important healthcare burden. We review the literature regarding pathogenesis, risk factors, and diagnosis of VS. The current and future potential management strategies are also discussed. A narrative review of all relevant papers known to the authors was conducted. The majority of VS remain clinically stable and do not require in

Computational aeroacoustics to identify sound sources in the generation of sibilant /s/.

A sibilant fricative /s/ is generated when the turbulent jet in the narrow channel between the tongue blade and the hard palate is deflected downwards through the space between the upper and lower incisors and then impinges the space between the lower incisors and the lower lip. The flow eddies in that region become a source of direct aerodynamic sound, which is also diffracted by the speech articulators and radiated outwards. The numerical simulation of these phenomena is complex. The spectrum of an /s/ typically peaks between 4 and 10 kHz, which implies that very fine computational meshes ar

[Research advances in molecular mechanisms underlying the different biological behaviors of vestibular schwannoma].

Current treatment options of vestibular schwannomas should not be limited to conventional surgery because of the variability of tumor growth. Recent studies of vestibular schwannomas suggested that the development of the tumor tended to depend on the shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm, and the expression patterns of merlin protein. New drug targets for schwannoma therapies might be identified through future in-depth investigations of the function of merlin, thus contributing to tumor control.
