PURPOSE: To report the effects to the eye following contact with spider contents.
DESIGN: Observational case report.
METHODS: A 46-year-old man presented with a painful and inflamed eye after contents of a spider got into his right eye when he squashed the spider with a newspaper. He suffered immediate severe pain in the eye, which rapidly became red and swollen. He had conjunctival edema and periorbital swelling of the eye and severe photophobia, but his vision was normal.
RESULTS: Topical local anesthetic was applied to the right eye, which was then flushed with normal saline for an hour.

Intracoronary infusion of adenosine is reported to inhibit cyclic flow variations after coronary artery injury and stenosis. We investigated peroneal reaction time (PRT) of 18 patients (21 ankles) with functional instability of the ankle and 8 healthy volunteer controls (9 ankles) before and after injecting local anesthetic into the sinus tarsi. We report two cases of a pain syndrome caused by large adrenal metastases in patients with lung cancer. A review of the literature identified 23 previously reported patients with primary lung cancers who appear to have had a similar syndrome, although in none of these cases were other likely causes of the pain syndrome carefully excluded. Fifteen shoulders of 14 patients with a keyhole tenodesis of the long head of the biceps were reviewed at an average follow-up of 7 years (3 years, 1 month to 13 years, 2 months). In 13 cases additional shoulder disease was noted during the operation. Eight patients had undergone rotator cuff decompression before the reference biceps tenodesis was performed. PURPOSE: It has been suggested that a source of narcotics used for nonmedical purposes by young adults is the unused opioids prescribed for the management of pain after the removal of impacted third molars. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether oral and maxillofacial surgeons routinely prescribe larger amounts of a narcotic than would generally be needed for adequate postoperative pain control. A secondary goal was to determine whether they use methods other than analgesic drugs to minimize postoperative pain and thereby reduce the amount of narcotic that might be needed.
