We investigated the effect of an extended denervation procedure in the thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) joint in patients suffering from CMC osteoarthritis. Between 2006 and 2018, 46 patients underwent the procedure in our clinic and were included in this retrospective study. Pain, strength, range of motion, DASH score, complications and overall satisfaction were determined. Assessment showed a significant decrease in pain and excellent physical function at a median 5 years' follow-up. Twelve patients needed secondary surgery due to persistent pain. Overall, 28 of the 46 patients were satisfied wit

BACKGROUND: Injuries of the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) are common shoulder injuries that often lead to pain and dysfunction of the affected shoulder. Regardless of operative or nonoperative treatment, a relatively large number of patients remain symptomatic and experience pain. However, the specific source of persistent pain in the ACJ remains ambiguous.
PURPOSE: To investigate the presence of sensory nerve fibers or pain-generating neurotransmitters within the intra-articular disk of the ACJ to determine its potential role as an independent pain generator in ACJ disorders.

BACKGROUND: The aim was to improve the diagnosis of acromioclavicular joint dislocation by studying the capabilities and characteristics of clinical and instrumental diagnostic methods. The idea is expressed that modern clinical and instrumental diagnostic methods comprise a large number of techniques, but no single algorithm for diagnosing injury to the AC joint has been developed. A gold standard for investigating and diagnosing acute AC joint dislocation does not currently exist.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of the characteristics and capabilities of clinical and instrument

An otherwise healthy young man was referred to the rheumatologist because of bilateral proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint enlargements. The main concern was excluding the presence of inflammatory arthritis. Physical examination revealed bilateral PIP finger joints (II-IV) swellings and cutaneous thickenings in adjacent areas. The specificity of this case was the patient who appeared in the physician's room with his violin suitcase pointing to his profession even from the first site. Complete blood count with leucocyte differentials appeared without changes. Radiographics failed to show joint…

BACKGROUND: Involvement of the temporomandibular joint can be shown in 40-90% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), although it is often asymptomatic. Restricted jaw mobility and jaw pain can be found in approximately 20% of patients with JIA (prevalence: 70 per 100 000 persons). Early diagnosis and treatment of the underlying disease are essential for a good outcome, but uniform, consensus-based management is still lacking.
METHODS: The clinical practice guideline is based on the findings of a systematic literature review in multiple databases and a D

Chronic synovitis is contributing to the development of arthropathy in hemophilia A and B. In most patients with severe and moderate hemophilia, during lifetime, joint damage progresses despite early prophylaxis and intense treatment with coagulation factor concentrates. Recurrent hemorrhages into the joints and subclinical bleeding lead to chronic inflammation of the synovium, neoangiogenesis and remodeling, sustaining a vicious circle of bleeding-remodeling-bleeding and progression of osteochondral damage. Imaging techniques including ultrasound and MRI are able to early visualize synovitis …

Joint pain is a complex phenomenon that involves multiple endogenous mediators and pathophysiological events. In addition to nociceptive and inflammatory pain, some patients report neuropathic-like pain symptoms. Examination of arthritic joints from humans and preclinical animal models have revealed axonal damage which is likely the source of the neuropathic pain. The mediators responsible for joint peripheral neuropathy are obscure, but lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) has emerged as a leading candidate target. In the present study, male and female Wistar rats received an intra-articular injection…

BACKGROUND: The effect of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on the ankle joint is not entirely clear. The purpose of this study is to assess postoperative changes in the coronal alignment of the ankle joint in patients undergoing TKA for various degrees of knee deformity.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 107 patients who had undergone TKA for primary osteoarthritis. In all cases, preoperative coronal alignment deformity of the knee was corrected in an attempt to restore the native mechanical axis of the knee. Patients were stratified into 3 groups according to the degree of knee coronal

The plantar plate is a known stabilizer of the lesser toe metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. MTP instability is a known common cause of metatarsalgia, most commonly in the second toe. In the last decade, clinical staging and anatomic grading mechanisms have been published to guide the surgeons on the treatment of MTP instability; this has also led to an understanding of how plantar plate tears relate to MTP joint instability. Direct surgical repair of the plantar plate has been described, short-term outcomes have been published, and the results are not perfect, but promising with respect to pati

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of osteoarticular tuberculosis is increasing. Tuberculous infection in midfoot is rare. Establishing the diagnosis is difficult, leading to delay in management and leave many complications.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old man presents to our clinic with pain on his foot for the last 1 year. No other remarkable signs and symptoms. X-ray of his foot shown destruction of the 1st tarsometatarsal joint, later confirmed with MRI that shown synovitis and bone edema. Mantoux test and biopsy were done and established the diagnosis of tuberculous infection.

Cartilage is a crucial component of the developing and functioning skeleton. It establishes a template for bone formation and comprises the articular cartilage for smooth joint movement. It is formed by dedicated matrix-secreting cells (chondrocytes) whose development and survival are negatively affected by disorders of crucial homeostatic and metabolic pathways, and by impaired ER and/or mitochondrial stress responses. As these processes are directly influenced by macroautophagy/autophagy, dysregulation of autophagy control in chondrocytes and their progenitors can contribute to human skeleta

PURPOSE: Childhood bone and joint infection (BJI) is a potentially severe disease that may have permanent sequelae, including growth impairment and limb deformity. It has been characterised in the literature with a focus on Western epidemiology; there are currently no reports detailing global epidemiology and bacteriology. This omits key data from determining temporal trends, appropriate antibiotic therapy, and resource allocation. This review aims to identify studies that characterise the incidence of childhood bone and joint infection or provide detailed bacteriology within their region.

We presented a case of primary lymphoma of the sternoclavicular joint. A 67-year-old woman with a history of swelling at the sternoclavicular joint region was considered as osteoarthritis initially. Chest CT found a soft tissue mass around the sternoclavicular joint. Biopsy demonstrated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The subsequent FDG PET/CT revealed FDG-avid articular destruction with surrounding soft tissue mass without any other abnormal findings, suggesting a primary extranodal lymphoma of sternoclavicular joint.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the prevalence of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJD) among the general population.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five main electronic databases and three grey literature were searched to identify observational studies in which TMJD was diagnosed using the research diagnostic criteria (RDC/TMD) or diagnostic criteria (DC/TMD). The studies were blindly selected by two reviewers based on eligibility criteria. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist, and the "R" Statistics software

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) arthroscopy is considered an effective and safe minimally invasive surgical approach. While the long-term outcomes of arthroscopy tend to be positive and free of secondary effects, patients occasionally complain about their hearing following the treatment. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate possible hearing changes associated with TMJ arthroscopy. Pure-tone audiograms were performed in patients two weeks before TMJ arthroscopy and repeated six weeks after intervention. A total of 15 patients (mean age of 41.73±16.36) were enrolled; 25 TMJ arthros

Aging is one of the major risk factors for degenerative joint disorders, including those involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). TMJ degeneration occurs primarily in the population over 65, significantly increasing the risk of joint discomfort, restricted joint mobility, and reduced quality of life. Unfortunately, there is currently no effective mechanism-based treatment available in the clinic to alleviate TMJ degeneration with aging. We now demonstrate that intermittent administration of senolytics, drugs which can selectively clear senescent cells, preserved mandibular condylar cartila
