Theatre-Neuroscience: a brief perspective on the use of neuroscientific techniques to measure interpersonal coordination and the sense of self in theatrical contexts.

Cognitive neuroscientists have collaborated with the performing arts industry by bringing multimodal techniques, i.e. physiological, behavioural, and neural measurements, to the investigation of social cognition within these artistic contexts. This brief perspective presents, discusses, and evaluates the emerging field of 'Theatre-Neuroscience', which is an example of such collaboration. Here, I discuss the Theatre-Neuroscience research conducted to date, which has predominantly investigated the social-cognitive concepts of actors' and audiences' interpersonal coordination during live theatre

Architectural Design Features in High Density Urban Residential Estates and Their Role in Mosquito Incidence in Singapore.

Existing research has established building age as a dominant urban factor influencing mosquito incidence in Singapore, which presents a problem for vector-borne diseases like Dengue. However, in-depth research understanding this relationship has yet to be conducted. This paper explores the correlation between detailed building design features and female Aedes Aegypti mosquito counts, applied to a novel dataset of 400 high-rise residential buildings representing a nationally representative sample. Based on linear regression results, a range of specific building features was found to be statisti

Cannabidiol for the Treatment of Cervical Spondyloarthritis-Related Pain: A Case Report.

Spondyloarthritis (SA) is a chronic inflammatory disease that predominantly affects the spinal column. SA-related pain can be intense, persistent, and disabling. Studies with cannabis have been conducted involving patients with refractory epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, sleep disorders, and chronic pain. Cannabidiol is the major non-psychotropic component of cannabis, has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, and exerts anxiolytic and mood-stabilizing effects. This paper reports a case of a 72-year-old male with SA, with mild stenoses of the spinal canal at C4-C5 and C

Hybrid Rehabilitation System with Motion Estimation Based on EMG Signals.

Patients with upper limb paralysis undergo various types of rehabilitation to reconstruct upper limb functions necessary for their return to daily life and social activities. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an effective rehabilitation support system using robotic technologies. In this study, we propose an EMG-driven hybrid rehabilitation system based on the estimation of intended motion using a probabilistic neural network. In the proposed system, the developed robot and functional electrical stimulation are controlled by estimating the patient's intention, which enables the intuitive le

Multiple Spatial Spectral Components of Static Skin Deformation for Predicting Macroscopic Roughness Perception.

A previous study suggested a relationship between the spatial spectrum of finger pad skin deformation and perception of macroscopic roughness features. This study tested a new hypothesis that macroscopic roughness perception is the result of a weighted linear combination of multiple spatial spectral components of skin deformation. Experiments were conducted by capturing close-up images of finger pad deformation while the pads were pushed onto specimens with macroscopic features. Additionally, the roughness perceptions of these specimens were collected using a magnitude estimation method. The c

Activation by adrenaline of a low-conductance G protein-dependent K+ channel in mouse pancreatic B cells.

Insulin is produced and secreted by the B cells in the endocrine pancreas. In vivo, insulin secretion is under the control of a number of metabolic, neural and hormonal substances. It is now clear that stimulation of insulin release by fuel secretagogues, such as glucose, involves the closure of K+ channels that are sensitive to the intracellular ATP concentration (KATP channels). This leads to membrane depolarization and the generation of Ca2(+)-dependent action potentials. The mechanisms whereby hormones and neurotransmitters such as adrenaline, galanin and somatostatin, which are released b

Ear disease in relation to age in the cleft palate child and adolescent.

Ninety-eight cleft palate subjects were studied to ascertain the eventual adolescent and adult hearing. There were 72 complete clefts of lip and palate and 26 clefts of the palate alone. The incidence or side of ear disease did not appear to be influenced by this type of cleft. Other systemic anomalies were present in 11 cases with congenital middle ear abnormalities in 3 and sensory neural hearing loss in 8 subjects. Progressive improvement in incidence of hearing loss from 94% at 4 years to 42% at 20 years was noted with the strict definition of hearing loss as 10 dB conductive loss at any o

Data Mining-Based Analysis of Acupoint Selection Patterns in Acupuncture Treatment for Lumbar Disc Herniation.

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) poses a significant global health burden, with lifetime prevalence rates reaching 40%. While acupuncture is widely used for LDH, the heterogeneity in acupoint selection hinders the standardization of treatment protocols. This study aimed to systematically screen clinical literature and utilize data mining techniques to identify core acupoint combinations and therapeutic strategies for LDH. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic search was conducted across seven electronic databases (PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, SinoMed, CNKI, Wanfang, and

Prefrontal cortex hypoactivation in response to sleep-related pictures in shift workers.

Shift work can lead to mental health issues such as sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment. Neural activation in response to external sleep-related stimuli may vary according to shift work patterns. In this study, we investigated the differences in brain activity in response to sleep-related stimuli between shift-worker (SW) nurses and healthy controls (HCs), and we also assessed the relationships between sleep-related problems and brain activity. The hypothesis was that shift workers would exhibit altered activation in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) when processing sleep-related stimuli, re

Non-invasive neuromodulation for alleviating dyspnoea: protocol for a feasibility sham-controlled randomised trial.

INTRODUCTION: Dyspnoea affects 10% of the general population, and 12% of hospitalised patients report experiencing dyspnoea at rest. It is a common and distressing symptom experienced by people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Neuromodulation, which uses electrical stimulation to modulate neural pathways, is a validated clinical procedure offering a potential therapeutic approach. We speculate that non-invasive transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) and trigeminal transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) could improve dyspnoea management by targeting rel

Research trends and hotspots of post-stroke upper limb dysfunction: a bibliometric and visualization analysis.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of stroke has been increasing. Motor dysfunction is observed in approximately 55 to 75% of stroke patients, with upper limb impairment affecting around 85% of them. Following upper limb dysfunction, the body's recovery time is not only slower compared to the lower limbs, but the restoration of its fine motor skills is significantly more challenging, greatly impacting the daily lives of patients. Consequently, there is an increasing urgency for study on the upper limb function in stroke. METHODS: A search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection: Sc

The Analgesic Effect of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation in Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review, Meta-Analysis, and Meta-Regression of Potential Influencers of Clinical Effect.

BACKGROUND: There is tentative evidence to support the analgesic effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in fibromyalgia (FM), with large variability in the effect size (ES) encountered in different clinical trials. Understanding the source of the variability and exploring how it relates to the clinical results could characterize effective neuromodulation protocols and ultimately guide care in FM pain. The primary objective of this study was to determine the effect of tDCS in FM pain as compared with sham tDCS. The secondary objective was to explore the relationship of methodo

Comparative efficacy of exercise modalities for mild cognitive impairment in older adults: A network meta-analysis.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) represents a critical window for dementia prevention, yet the comparative efficacy of diverse exercise modalities remains unclear. We conducted a frequentist network meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled trials to identify the optimal exercise intervention for improving global cognition in older adults with MCI. Combined physical-cognitive training ranked first with a 68.0% probability of being the most effective intervention, followed by Tai Chi (15.9%), while single-mode exercises and control groups showed substantially lower benefits. Interventions requir

Mental Fatigue and Sports Performance of Athletes: Theoretical Explanation, Influencing Factors, and Intervention Methods.

Mental fatigue is an important factor affecting athletes' performance. Explaining the effects of mental fatigue on sports performance from a theoretical point of view can help us deeply understand the interconnection between mental fatigue and sports performance and conduct effective interventions based on this. Combining the relevant literature in China and abroad reveals that the current academic theories on the mechanism of sports fatigue include motivational control theory, underload theory, neural waste disposal hypothesis, and resource depletion theory. The effects of mental fatigue on p

Acetic Acid: An Underestimated Metabolite in Ethanol-Induced Changes in Regulating Cardiovascular Function.

Acetic acid is a bioactive short-chain fatty acid produced in large quantities from ethanol metabolism. In this review, we describe how acetic acid/acetate generates oxidative stress, alters the function of pre-sympathetic neurons, and can potentially influence cardiovascular function in both humans and rodents after ethanol consumption. Our recent findings from in vivo and in vitro studies support the notion that administration of acetic acid/acetate generates oxidative stress and increases sympathetic outflow, leading to alterations in arterial blood pressure. Real-time investigation of how

A meta-analysis of gray matter volume abnormalities in HIV patients.

HIV infection is known to have significant effects on central nervous system. This study conducted a meta-analysis of whole voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in HIV patients (N = 435) and HIV-uninfected controls (N = 397). This study observed a reduction of limbic lobe, cingulate gyrus, frontal lobe, middle frontal gyrus, sub-lobar, insula, inferior frontal gyrus and superior frontal gyrus volume in HIV patients. These morphological differences may be responsible for cognitive decline in HIV patients, as these brain regions are closely related to motor and memory functions. These results contribut

High Throughput Small Molecule Screen for Reactivation of FMR1 in Fragile X Syndrome Human Neural Cells.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited cause of autism and intellectual disability. The majority of FXS cases are caused by transcriptional repression of the FMR1 gene due to epigenetic changes that are not recapitulated in current animal disease models. FXS patient induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived gene edited reporter cell lines enable novel strategies to discover reactivators of FMR1 expression in human cells on a much larger scale than previously possible. Here, we describe the workflow using FXS iPSC-derived neural cell lines to conduct a massive, unbiased screen
