The Prevalence of Oral Anomalies Among Healthy Newborns at a Gynecological Obstetric Hospital in Quito, Ecuador: An Observational, Cross-Sectional Study.

Objectives: Early observations often fail to detect anomalies that may impact the health and quality of life of newborns. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of oral anomalies in newborns and explore their possible associations with sociodemographic factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Quito, Ecuador, analyzing a sample of 241 newborns. The presence of oral anomalies was recorded, and their association with sex, birth weight, maternal age, and gestational factors was evaluated. Results: The prevalence of oral anomalies was 72.3%, with Epstein's pearls being the m

Adverse Birth and Obstetric Outcomes in the Offspring of Male Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors: A Nationwide Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: The growing population of male adolescent and young adult (AYA, ages 15-40 years) cancer survivors has heightened interest in their reproductive health. However, studies have reported conflicting findings on the potential risks of cancer and its treatments on birth and obstetric outcomes. METHODS: We used encrypted identification numbers for both fathers and mothers to link three nationwide Taiwan datasets from 2004 to 2019, identifying 3,785 births with a paternal history of AYA cancer. For comparison, we included 37,850 matched fathers without a cancer history, matched by patern

Long-Term Results after Early Secondary Repair of Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury: A Case Series and Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The incidence of obstetric anal sphincter injury (OASI) is 3.6-6% of women with vaginal deliveries. Complications to OASI are common, and secondary repair is needed in 2.6-3%. Traditionally, secondary repair has been postponed until wound healing, but studies have shown that early secondary repair within 21 days can be safely performed. METHODS: The aim of this cohort study and literature review was to investigate the long-term outcomes after early secondary repair with focus on anal incontinence, quality of life and impact on sexual function with the use of Inter

A pilot randomised controlled trial comparing a stool softener versus osmotic laxatives following obstetric anal sphincter injury.

OBJECTIVE: Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injuries (OASIs) are associated with significant maternal morbidity, specifically anal incontinence. There is a lack of robust evidence guiding postoperative management of OASI creating variation amongst types of laxatives used. This pilot study compares a stool softener and an osmotic laxative to assess ease of evacuation, defecation outcomes, continence status (anal incontinence), wound dehiscence and the impact of laxatives on quality of life in women following OASI repair in the postpartum period. METHODS: Women who birthed and sustained an OASIs were a

25-Hydroxyvitamin D Deficiency in the First Trimester Is Associated with Increased Obstetric Complications despite Standard Supplementation during Pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy has been linked to adverse maternal-fetal outcomes. However, it remains unclear whether standard supplementation mitigates risks equally in patients with differing baseline 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D3] levels. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine whether differences exist in obstetric outcomes and pregnancy-related disorders among patients with different levels of 25(OH)D3 in the first trimester who receive standard supplementation. DESIGN: This retrospective comparative cohort study involves pregnant women aged 16-50 ye

Implementation of a Technology-Based Mobile Obstetric Referral Emergency System (MORES): Qualitative Assessment of Health Workers in Rural Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains a persistent challenge in low- and middle-income countries, where evidence-based interventions of obstetric triage and prehospital communication remain sparse. There is limited implementation evidence for technology-based approaches to improve obstetric care in such contexts. Liberia struggles with maternal mortality, particularly in rural areas where deaths are attributable to delays from absent triage and interfacility communication. We implemented a Mobile Obstetric Referral Emergency System (MORES) in rural Bong County to improve prehospital transfer,

Comparing models that integrate obstetric care and WIC on improved program enrollment during pregnancy: a protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Low-income, rural pregnant women are at disproportionate risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes as well as future cardiovascular risk. Currently, less than half of eligible women enroll in the Women, Infants, and Children's (WIC) Program. This study aims to evaluate whether integrating clinical care and social care may advance health equity and reduce health disparities by directly linking women receiving obstetric care to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for WIC and/or a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN). METHODS: This pragmatic study is situated in real-world care a

Task sharing for increasing access to obstetric ultrasonography: a formative qualitative study of nurse-led scanning with telemedicine review in Kenya.

The informal settlements of Nairobi have higher neonatal and infant mortality rates than the average for Nairobi. Universal access to important diagnostics like ultrasonography is poor and inequitable due to the high cost of devices and limited availability of skilled sonographers. Recent advances of mobile ultrasound probes connected to smartphones, with or without artificial intelligence support, have improved access to devices; but skills to perform and interpret scans continue to be limited. The SonoMobile intervention involved training nurse-midwives to conduct point-of-care obstetric ult

A Rare Case of Neonatal Death Due to a Cranial Vault Fracture Following the Use of Obstetric Vacuum Extractor and Review of Literature.

In the course of childbirth, if complications arise during the expulsion of the fetus, instruments can be employed to facilitate delivery. The vacuum extractor, or ventouse, is considered a relatively safe tool associated with a low rate of complications and mortality. However, it is crucial that the instrument be applied in the correct position and that the pulling force is not excessive to minimize damage to the fetal cranial structures. Fractures of the cranial vault following the application of obstetric vacuum extraction are very rare events. This paper presents a case of perinatal death d

Obstetric outcomes in the expectant management of cesarean scar pregnancy with fetal heart activity: a single-center retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) is a high-risk complication characterized by the implantation of a pregnancy within a cesarean scar resulting from a previous delivery. Currently, clinical indicators guiding the expectant management of patients with CSP are lacking. We thus aimed to evaluate pregnancy and neonatal outcomes among women who underwent expectant CSP management and to investigate whether sonographic signs correlated with obstetric outcomes. METHODS: We retrospective reviewed the electronic medical records and first-trimester transvaginal ultrasonography reports of consecu

Obstetric and neonatal outcomes in pregnancies complicated by placental abruption with vs. without supporting sonographic findings- A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Placental abruption (PA) is a major obstetric complication associated with worse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Though ultrasound findings may support the diagnosis of PA, the association of such findings to the severity of PA and maternal and neonatal outcomes is not yet clear. We aimed to assess the maternal and neonatal outcomes of PA cases with vs. without related sonographic findings. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, all deliveries complicated by PA between 2009 and 2022 were included. Placental histopathology, obstetric, and neonatal outcomes were compared bet
