Intra- and Inter-Rater Reliability of Tongue Physical Function Assessments in Children.

BACKGROUND: Tongue function is critical for essential activities such as feeding and sleep. In particular, tongue protrusion plays a key role in maintaining airway patency during sleep. However, standardised protocols for measuring tongue protrusion are lacking, and the reliability of tongue function assessments in children remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To assess the intra- and inter-rater reliability of a novel tongue protrusion measurement method using a 3D-printed stand, alongside established tongue measurements. METHODS: Fifty-six children aged 4 to 17 years underwent two successive

DNA-bound avian R2 non-LTR retrotransposon protein recruits a second R2 protein for genome-protective second-strand nicking.

Animal genomes have expanded with the mobility of non-long-terminal-repeat retrotransposons. These retrotransposons initiate genome insertions using a retrotransposon protein that coordinately nicks a target site and uses the nick to prime first-strand cDNA synthesis with bound template RNA. To generate a stable genome insertion, a second nick is required and second-strand synthesis involving DNA repair machinery. Here, we use step-wise biochemical reconstitution, cellular assays, and quantitative genomics to establish the second-strand nicking mechanism that supports precise human genome inse

Clinical impact of customised positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy interfaces (3DPiPPIn): a single site randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy is the recognised treatment for sleep disordered breathing (SDB), delivered via a tight-fitting face mask (interface). Conventional interfaces do not consider facial geometries, often resulting in poor fit and ineffective therapy. Three-dimensional (3D) printing of customised interfaces may improve comfort and outcomes. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the clinical impact of customised versus conventional oronasal interfaces in adults with obstrcutive sleep apnoea (OSA). The primary outcome was residual Apnoea Hypopnea Index (AHI) at 6 months; secon

Large-Scale Stereolithography Precision Manufactured Solid Cone-Jet Emitters for Electrospray Mass Spectrometry.

An electrospray emitter is a crucial component for sample introduction at the front-end of ESI-MS. Its development plays a key role in enhancing analytical sensitivity and pushing forward biological discoveries. Herein, based on stereolithography printing, a high-throughput approach for large-scale precision manufacture of solid cone-jet emitters (SCONE) was developed. As opposed to classical tapered-tip emitters, the SCONE emitter has a solid cone inside, supporting an enhanced ionization efficiency and high electrospray stability. Based on stereolithography printing's precision, flexible and

Impacts of Sterilization Method on Material Properties of 3D Printable Resins With Prolonged Exposure to Cell Culture Environments.

Low-cost 3D printing has become increasingly important in biomedical research, enabling rapid fabrication of custom cell culture devices, fixtures, and biohybrid robotic components. However, little is known about how common sterilization procedures and prolonged cell culture exposure impact the mechanical properties of commercially available resins. In this study, we analyzed five candidate 3D-printable resins-three rigid (Asiga DentaGUIDE, Liqcreate Bio-Med Clear, and Phrozen AquaGray 8K) and two elastomeric (Asiga DentaGUM and Formlabs Silicone 40A)-to evaluate the effects of ethanol/UV and

Metal-backed patella: a reasonable alternative in a bone-preserving approach in revision TKA.

INTRODUCTION: Patellar management during revision TKA (rTKA) remains challenging. Metal-backed patella (MBP) with highly porous titanium coating applied by 3D printing may provide improved fixation in TKA, especially in patients with limited bone stock. The primary aim of this study was to assess implant survivorship among patients who received a new-generation MBP during revision TKA. Secondary aims were to assess (1) healthcare utilization, and (2) preoperative and 1-year PROMs. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of patients who received a MBP during rTKA from 2017 to 2022. In total,

Mechanical Characterization of PLA+ Specimens with Different Geometries Using Experimental and Numerical Methods.

Geometric discontinuities are unavoidable in additively manufactured polymer components and can significantly alter their mechanical response; however, their effects are rarely quantified in a systematic and geometry-comparative manner. In this study, the tensile behavior of FDM-printed PLA+ specimens with three different geometries-dog-bone, circular-hole, and U-notched (manufactured and tested in accordance with ASTM D638 (Type IV))-was experimentally and numerically investigated. Tensile tests were conducted using a universal testing machine equipped with an extensometer, while finite eleme

Influence of subchondral bone density on intra-articular stresses due to fixation hardware instrumentation and removal: A biomechanical cadaver study.

PURPOSE: Tibial plateau fractures are often surgically treated to restore native joint congruity and articular alignment. While these injuries portend an increased risk for end stage knee osteoarthritis, it is unknown whether the fixation constructs contribute to the development of osteoarthritis by influencing articular stress distribution following instrumentation. METHODS: We conducted a cadaver study measuring resultant intra-articular stresses of the native knee due to physiological levels of ex-vivo loading, after instrumentation with plate and screw fixation, and after implant removal.

Silk proteins for 3D bioprinting: Integrating fibroin structural support with sericin cell-supportive capability.

Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting requires inks and bioinks that combine appropriate processing and mechanical properties with a biologically supportive environment capable of sustaining cell viability and proliferation. Silk-based biomaterials have attracted considerable attention in biofabrication due to their tunable properties, processability, and structural similarity to extracellular matrix components. While most silk-based inks/bioinks rely primarily on silk fibroin (SF) for structural integrity, the use of silk sericin (SS) as a cell-supportive component remains comparatively underexp

Increasing target engagement via customized electrode positioning for personalized transcranial electrical stimulation: A biophysical modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial electric stimulation (TES) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique with therapeutic potential for diverse neurological disorders including Alzheimer's disease. Conventional TES montages with stimulation electrodes in standardized positions suffer from highly varying electric fields across subjects due to variable anatomy. Biophysical modelling using individual's brain imaging has thus become popular for montage planning but may be limited by fixed scalp electrode locations. OBJECTIVE: Here, we explore the potential benefits of flexible electrode positioning with 3

Low-cost and bendable patient-specific three-dimensional pulmonary vessel models for lung segmentectomy.

BACKGROUND: Lung segmentectomy offers the advantages of preserving pulmonary function and improving patient survival, leading to its increased adoption. However, this procedure is technically demanding, especially when compared with lobectomy, owing to anatomical shifts from intraoperative lung collapse and manipulation. To support thoracic surgeons and enhance their surgical training, we developed a low-cost, patient-specific, and bendable three-dimensional (3D) pulmonary vessel model. This study describes the development, clinical application, and evaluation of this model. METHODS: A flexib
