'We All Try to Imagine What It's Like for Someone to Be Dependent': Attitudes Towards Drug Users Among Medical Students in the United Kingdom and Its Impact on Their Professional Identity Formation.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that some doctors and medical students hold stigmatising attitudes towards drug users. AIMS: This study aimed to explore the UK medical students' attitudes towards drug use, factors influencing these attitudes and their impact on professional identity formation. METHODS: A mixed methods study used a questionnaire and interviews in two UK medical schools. RESULTS: Data were collected from 62 questionnaires and 12 interviews. Most UK medi

The Barriers and Facilitators Healthcare Professionals' Experience When Assessing the Cutaneous Manifestations of Chronic Venous Insufficiency and Peripheral Arterial Disease in People With Dark Skin Tones: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

Recognising peripheral arterial disease and chronic venous insufficiency early and managing them appropriately improves patient outcomes and prevents ulceration. However, few studies consider the influence patient skin tone has on this assessment. The study aimed to explore the experiences of healthcare professionals when assessing the cutaneous manifestations of chronic venous insufficiency and peripheral arterial disease in people with dark skin tones. We conducted semi-structured online interviews with healthcare professionals working in the United Kingdom between July and December 2023. Th

Making do in the absence of specialist support: Exploring healthcare professionals' views, experiences and behaviours around long-term post-bariatric surgery follow-up care in the United Kingdom.

Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for obesity, but long-term can lead to health-related issues. Guidelines highlight the importance of long-term post-bariatric surgery follow-up. However, in the UK, there is currently no specific funding to support the delivery of this care. Our aim was to understand the views and experiences of healthcare professionals (HCPs) around long-term post-bariatric surgery follow-up, and barriers and enablers to care. Semi-structured interviews with HCPs in UK primary care or specialist weight management services were conducted. The topic guide was theoreti

Effectiveness of a Web-Based Self-Guided Intervention (MINDxYOU) for Reducing Stress and Promoting Mental Health Among Health Professionals: Results From a Stepped-Wedge Cluster Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: The high levels of sustained stress that health professionals often experience are a significant risk factor for developing mental health problems, such as anxiety, depression, and somatic symptoms, that not only affect their well-being but also have major social and organizational consequences. Different interventions, including those based on third-wave psychotherapy principles (ie, mindfulness, compassion, and acceptance), have proven to be effective in reducing stress in this population. Among them, those delivered on the web constitute a promising alternative with notable adva

Association of infection-induced antibody levels with risk of subsequent SARS-COV-2 reinfection among healthcare professionals, Rhode Island, 1 March 2020-17 February 2021.

Numerous studies have investigated vaccine-induced correlates of protection (CoP) against severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, but data on infection-induced CoP are limited. Given differences between vaccine- and infection-induced immune responses, in conjunction with low vaccination in many US populations, a better understanding of infection-induced CoP is needed. We used residual sera from a mid-2020 Rhode Island serosurvey of healthcare professionals (HCP) and corresponding state-collected SARS-CoV-2 testing data through February 2021 to generate an analyt

METHOD: Qualitative interviews with 26 health and social care professionals in the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care System, England, were conducted. Data analysis was undertaken using reflexive thematic analysis and informed by key conce

Communicative practices used by health and social care professionals, older adults and informal carers during advance care planning conversations: systematic review of qualitative evidence and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: While advance care planning (ACP) is linked with clinical and psychosocial benefits for older adults and their informal carers, uptake is low. Inadequate communication skills amongst clinicians has been identified as a key barrier to effective ACP. While existing literature reviews have focussed on hypothetical preferences, barriers and facilitators, none have examined direct experience of ACP communication with this population. The aim of this review was to identify and synthesise qualitative evidence regarding the communicative practices used to support older adults, informal car

Remote and rural communities face inequalities in access to specialist palliative care, could telemedicine enhance care? A qualitative study of patient, carer and healthcare professionals' experiences of video consultation.

BACKGROUND: Living in remote and rural areas is associated with worse health outcomes and poorer end-of-life care. Inequality in access to high-quality palliative care due to rurality is a worldwide problem. There is a need to evaluate potential ways, such as using telemedicine, to enhance palliative care and support patients to remain within their communities. OBJECTIVE: To understand the experiences of patients, carers and specialist palliative care professionals to receive/deliver video consultations in a rural setting. DESIGN: Qualitative semi-structured interviews with reflective themat

Study of TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-10, TGF-β and IL-6 Gene Polymorphisms in a Cohort of Professionals Who Worked in the First Pandemic Wave in the Brazilian Amazon.

Genetic polymorphisms in genes that enable the production of an effective host immune response, such as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPS) in the IL-6, INF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL-10, TGF-beta genes can cause unfavorable clinical conditions or susceptibility to pathologies. The objective of this work is to evaluate the epidemiological and genetic profile of professionals from health institutions during the first pandemic wave. A case-control study was performed with convenience sampling from health institutions (HI) workers from Belém-PA, Northern Brazil (N = 213), divided into symptomatology

Shoulder dislocations in professional male football (soccer) do not negatively affect long-term quantitative and qualitative performance parameters: A retrospective analysis of 30 in-match injuries of the German Bundesliga.

PURPOSE: Shoulder dislocations in professional football are increasing and regularly associated with substantial layoff times. However, research on players' postinjury performance remains limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate whether first-time shoulder dislocations negatively affect performance after return to play (RTP) and to determine whether the type of treatment (nonoperative vs. operative) influences post-injury performance outcomes. METHODS: Retrospective, media-based analysis of all first-time in-match shoulder dislocations in the top two German football leagu

BACKGROUND: Opioid agonist therapies (OAT), including methadone and buprenorphine, are first-line care in national and international guidelines, yet many countries, including the United States, frequently fail to effectively engage and retain people in OAT. How OAT is delivered-including the goals and culture of care-matters to patient engagement, treatment retention, and health outcomes. France has among the highest OAT receipt and lowest opioid-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study explored French interprofessional health care clinicians' approach to OAT, drawing lessons to i

METHODS: Data was collected creating and conducting a Germany-wide online questionnaire via LimeSurvey. The questionnaire was address

Acceptance of virtual patients as a continuous professional development approach among practicing nurses in primary health care settings in a low-income country: a quasi-experimental posttest setup design.

BACKGROUND: Virtual patients are an educational technological approach used in healthcare education. Its distinctive features have rendered virtual patient technology appealing for the training of medical and healthcare students, particularly in the enhancement of clinical reasoning. Virtual patients are less often applied for continuous professional development for practicing healthcare providers, and there is a scarcity of studies exploring this possibility. This study aimed to assess the acceptability of nurses for using virtual patients as a continuous professional development approach. M
