In the study, characterization of the anodized titanium surface was performed. In addition, histological evaluation and interfacial strength at the bone-implant interface of the characterized surfaces were then evaluated with the use of a rabbit model at 6 and 12 weeks after implantation. Twenty eyes of 10 dogs with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) were treated by occlusion of the ventral nasolacrimal punctum with a silicone punctal plug in order to increase the volume of the remaining tear lake. Punctal size was measured using a commercially available punctal gauge and the appropriate sized plug was inserted under local anaesthesia. Seven dogs showed an increase in Schirmer tear test I (STT) value. STT values immediately prior to plug placement were 2.3 +/- 1.7 mm/minute. STT values with punctal occlusion were 6.1 +/- 4.1 mm/minute, giving a mean increase of 3.8 +/- 2.7 mm/min

We describe a 70-year-old woman who underwent successful percutaneous Inoue antegrade-technique mitral valvuloplasty. Three months later, the patient developed right-sided heart failure. The authors present an analysis of methotrexate concentration in blood, urine and drainage liquid (both deep and superficial), as well as the results of biochemical analysis of blood and urine in a population of 42 patients treated surgically because of pathologic fractures of long bones. PURPOSE: Prospective study initiated in September of 1994 in patients with complicated glaucoma who had had the Ahmed valve implanted.
METHODS: 12 eyes from 12 patients were studied until February of 1996, with a median follow-up of 9.3+/-5.1 months (range 3-18 months). The most common diagnostic was pseudophakic glaucoma (8 ojos). 3 eyes had aphakic glaucoma and 1 eye had traumatic glaucoma. The success is defined as intraocular pressure (IOP) </=20 mmHg. without oral carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (OCAI) treatment.
RESULTS: The IOP was reduced (p<0.01) of 26.2+/-9.96 mmHg to 15.7+/-4.48 mmH

Between May 1995 and October 1997, 17 cases of small patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) underwent percutaneous coil occlusion at the Department of Pediatrics, Chulalongkorn Hospital. The mean age was 5.3 +/- 3.6 years (range, 1 year 4 months to 12.0 years); mean weight was 18.9 +/- 11.7 kg (range, 9 to 48 kg). PURPOSE: To evaluate our initial experience with percutaneous closure of secundum type atrial septal defects (ASD) with the Amplatzer septal occluder.
METHODS: Seven patients underwent occlusion by anterograde approach, under general anesthesia and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) guidance. One child had 2 ASD and a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). The ASD size ranged from 8.7 to 20 mm as measured by TEE. A transthoracic echocardiogram was performed in the morning after the procedure.
