PURPOSE: To investigate the refractive outcomes of multifocal LASIK to create a center far, peripheral near zone in presbyopes.
METHODS: This prospective study using LASIK with a center far, peripheral near ablation algorithm comprised 68 eyes of 34 hyperopes and 78 eyes of 39 myopes. Mean patient age was 49 +/- 5.60 years for hyperopes and 46.0 +/- 3.80 years for myopes. Mean baseline manifest refraction spherical equivalent was +1.76 +/- 0.96 diopters (D) in hyperopes and -3.06 +/- 1.73 D in myopes. PURPOSE: To evaluate early visual and refractive outcomes following treatment of corneal endothelial dysfunction with a corneal transplantation technique, Descemet's stripping with endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK).
METHODS: Visual and refractive outcomes of the first 50 consecutive cases of DSEK performed by a single surgeon between December 2003 and July 2004 were analyzed retrospectively. The DSEK technique consisted of stripping Descemet's membrane and endothelium from a recipient cornea and transplanting the posterior stroma and endothelium of a donor cornea through a 5-mm incision.

PURPOSE: To report the 3-month results of our first cases of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) with Alcon's CustomCornea.
METHODS: Wavefront analysis was performed using the LADARWave aberrometer and ablation was performed with the LADARVision4000 system. Thirty-one eyes of 17 patients were analyzed prospectively, at 1 and 3 months after CustomCornea surgery. Psychophysical tests were performed, including high and low contrast acuity, and contrast sensitivity under scotopic and photopic conditions. In addition, psychometric testing was performed using a subjective vision questionnaire.

Clinical features, electrophysiological characteristics, neuroradiological symptoms and associations with systemic malformations have been studied in 76 children with abnormalities of the optic nerve excavation: the morning glory syndrome, optic nerve coloboma, and congenital peripapillary staphyloma. Based on the results, the criteria are determined for the differential diagnosis of these optic nerve abnormalities and the hypothesis on their different embryogenesis is confirmed.

UNLABELLED: Corneal metabolism is reduced after cataract extraction.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a prospective study the corneal thickness and endothelial cell count of 48 patients were examined after phacoemulsification. Corneal thickness was measured with an ultrasound pachymeter and the endothelial cell count with a contact endothelial camera at the 12 o'clock position and in the corneal center before and 4 weeks, 4 months and 1 year after operation.

BACKGROUND: Children who have had cataract removal tend to have decreasing hyperopia (myopic shift) as they grow older. We wondered if the rate of myopic shift could be determined by age at surgery, cataract type, glaucoma, or other factors.
METHODS: We studied 156 aphakic eyes of children who had cataract surgery before age 10 and documented refractions for more than 3 years. Refraction was corrected with contact lenses and spectacles; glaucoma was managed with medicine and surgery. Stepwise multiple regression was used to analyze differences in the rate of myopic shift between subgroups.

PURPOSE: This thesis explores the idea that light energy, especially ultraviolet light, contributes to the unequal distribution of cataract around the world and to the development of cortical opacities.
METHODS: In the first section, the thesis reviews historical concepts of the function of the lens and the nature of cataract, epidemiologic data on the global distribution of cataract, and clinical observations of the predominant location of cortical opacification. Second, computer ray tracings and geometric optics demonstrate the passage of light of varying angle of incidence within the lens.
