Preoperative assessment of perforating arteries around amygdala glioblastoma using intra-arterial CT angiography with ultra-high-resolution CT and MR tractography: a case report.

Preservation of the perforating arteries (PAs) supplying the pyramidal tract (PT-PAs) is essential during glioblastoma resection. A 60-year-old man presented with sensory aphasia caused by a left medial temporal glioblastoma. To determine the surgical indication and strategy, we assessed the tumor's location and its relationship with the PT-PAs using intra-arterial computed tomography (CT) angiography combined with ultra-high-resolution CT (UHR-IA-CTA), gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, and tractography. Imaging revealed an amygdala glioblastoma without the involvemen

Investigating the relationship between glymphatic dysfunction and motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease.

The glymphatic system is instrumental in cerebral waste drainage, and its impairment is mechanistically linked to the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease (PD). Nevertheless, the relationship between dysfunction in the clearance processes and the intensity of motor symptoms in PD remains inadequately characterized. This study applied the non-invasive Diffusion Tensor Image Analysis along the Perivascular Space technique to quantify the clearance network activity in PD patients compared with healthy controls (HCs), probing its prospects as an imaging biomarker for

MRI-based brain structural changes in adult-onset dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Adult-onset dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is a rare autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia subtype, characterized by widespread brain neurodegeneration. However, comprehensive studies on whole-brain structural changes remain limited. This study aimed to quantify brain structural damage in adult-onset DRPLA and correlate these findings with clinical data. METHODS: Twenty-four adult-onset DRPLA patients were recruited and underwent structural and diffusion MRI at 3.0 Tesla. Multimodal analyses were conducted to assess cortical thickness, the volumes of

Spatial and signal features of white matter integrity and associations with clinical factors: A CARDIA brain MRI study.

White matter hyperintensities (WMH) may be indicative of age-related cerebrovascular diseases and contribute to cognitive and functional decline. Normal appearing WM (NAWM) adjacent to WMH, termed "penumbra," is known to be vulnerable to future WMH pathology. WM integrity can be evaluated using multiple magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) modalities. We aimed to identify MRI features predictive of WMH growth and to compare the implications of these features based on spatial proximity to existing WMH versus signal features in baseline NAWM. We used baseline and 5-year follow-up MRI scans in 485 mi

Reduced basal ganglia tissue-iron concentration in school-age children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is localized to limbic circuitry.

Dopamine-related abnormalities in the basal ganglia have been implicated in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Iron plays a critical role in supporting dopaminergic function, and reduced brain iron and serum ferritin levels have been linked to ADHD symptom severity in children. Furthermore, the basal ganglia is a central brain region implicated in ADHD psychopathology and involved in motor and reward functions as well as emotional responding. The present study repurposed diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to examine effects of an ADHD diagnosis and sex on iron deposition within the b

Analysis of brain and spinal MRI measures in a common domain to investigate directional neurodegeneration in motor neuron disease.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and cervical spinal cord is often performed in diagnostic evaluation of suspected motor neuron disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (MND/ALS). Analysis of MRI-derived tissue damage metrics in a common domain facilitates group-level inferences on pathophysiology. This approach was applied to address competing hypotheses of directionality of neurodegeneration, whether anterograde, cranio-caudal dying-forward from precentral gyrus or retrograde, dying-back. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, MRI was performed on 75 MND patients and

Long-term follow-up of neurodegenerative phenomenon in severe traumatic brain injury using MRI.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) lesions are known to evolve over time, but the duration and consequences of cerebral remodelling are unclear. Degenerative mechanisms occurring in the chronic phase after TBI could constitute "tertiary" lesions related to the neurological outcome. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this prospective study of severe TBI was to longitudinally evaluate the volume of white and grey matter structures and white matter integrity with 2 time-point multimodal MRI. METHODS: Longitudinal MRI follow-up was obtained for 11 healthy controls (HCs) and 22 individuals with TB

Brain Deep Medullary Veins on 7T MRI in Dutch-Type Hereditary Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy.

BACKGROUND: Deep medullary vein (DMV) changes occur in cerebral small vessel diseases (SVD) and in Alzheimer's disease. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a common SVD that has a high co-morbidity with Alzheimer's disease. So far, DMVs have not been evaluated in CAA. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate DMVs in Dutch-type hereditary CAA (D-CAA) mutation carriers and controls, in relation to MRI markers associated with D-CAA. METHODS: Quantitative DMV parameters length, tortuosity, inhomogeneity, and density were quantified on 7 Tesla 3D susceptibility weighted MRI in pre-symptomatic D-CAA mutation carri

Diffuse axonal injury has a characteristic multidimensional MRI signature in the human brain.

Axonal injury is a major contributor to the clinical symptomatology in patients with traumatic brain injury. Conventional neuroradiological tools, such as CT and MRI, are insensitive to diffuse axonal injury (DAI) caused by trauma. Diffusion tensor MRI parameters may change in DAI lesions; however, the nature of these changes is inconsistent. Multidimensional MRI is an emerging approach that combines T1, T2, and diffusion, and replaces voxel-averaged values with distributions, which allows selective isolation of specific potential abnormal components. By performing a combined post-mortem multi

Focal white matter microstructural alteration after anthracycline-based systemic treatment in long-term breast cancer survivors: a structural magnetic resonance imaging study.

Understanding the neural correlates of cognitive problems in patients with breast cancer (BC) after systemic treatment have been a topic of increasing investigation. The heterogeneity of the systemic treatment regimens may undermine our ability to identify brain microstructural alterations resulting from any given regimen. We investigated the detrimental effects of the anthracycline-based systemic treatment (AST) regimen (epirubicin and cyclophosphamide + docetaxel + tamoxifen) on brain gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) microstructural alteration in long-term BC survivors. We performed a

Joint analysis of frontal theta synchrony and white matter following mild traumatic brain injury.

Some of the most disabling aspects of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) include lingering deficits in executive functioning. It is known that mTBI can damage white matter tracts, but it remains unknown how this structural brain damage translates into cognitive deficits. This experiment utilized theta band phase synchrony to identify the dysfunctional neural operations that contribute to cognitive problems following mTBI. Sub-acute stage (< 2 weeks) mTBI patients (N = 52) and healthy matched controls (N = 32) completed a control-demanding task with concurrent EEG. Structural MRI was also colle

Performance of simultaneous multi-slice accelerated diffusion-weighted imaging for assessing focal renal lesions in pediatric patients with tuberous sclerosis complex.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a useful MRI technique to characterize abdominal lesions in children, but long acquisition times can lead to image degradation. Simultaneous multi-slice accelerated DWI is a promising technique to shorten DWI scan times. OBJECTIVE: To test the feasibility of simultaneous multi-slice DWI of the kidneys in pediatric patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) and to evaluate the accelerated protocol regarding image quality and quantitative apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values compared to standard echoplanar DWI sequence.
