BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in the development of diabetes mellitus (DM), which is more common in people with HIV (PWH) than in people without HIV (PWoH). Variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and mitochondrial-toxic antiretroviral therapy (ART) may influence the susceptibility to DM but is underexplored in men with HIV.
METHODS: Men from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS) without DM and with fasting glucose data were included. Type 2 DM was defined by fasting glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, DM medication use, a DM diagnosis, or hemoglobin A1c ≥ 6.5%. Exposure to mitochond

Vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a public health challenge in Angola despite the expansion of prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) programmes. This study aimed to identify factors associated with vertical HIV transmission in a referral maternity hospital in Luanda. An observational case-control study was conducted using retrospective clinical and laboratory records from 2019 to 2024. A total of 204 mother-infant pairs were included, comprising 68 cases (HIV-infected infants) and 136 controls (HIV-exposed but uninfected infants), frequency-matche

Heparanase-1 (HPSE) is a multifunctional enzyme with well-established pro-carcinogenic and pro-viral activities, implicated in the life cycles of several viruses, including Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, and Hepatitis C virus. However, its potential contribution to Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection has remained unexplored. Here, we investigated the role of HPSE in HIV-1 replication using complementary pharmacological and genetic approaches. The clinically advanced HPSE inhibitor PI-88 (muparfostat) exhibited potent anti-HIV-1 activity at nanomolar concentrations in cel

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) transmission is heterogenous, yet high-risk populations remain poorly defined. We aimed to assess whether people who smoke drugs (PWSD) have elevated TB disease rates in a high-burden setting.
METHODS: We recruited PWSD from a rural community in the Western Cape, South Africa, using respondent-driven sampling (RDS). Participants were ≥15 years old, tested positive for methamphetamine and/or methaqualone, and completed TB and HIV testing and biobehavioral surveys. We defined TB disease as culturable TB, Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Ultra) MTB detected with no history of T

BACKGROUND: A wide range of effective antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens with favourable side effects are available. More than 70% of HIV care costs in the Netherlands are attributed to ART. We developed an ART algorithm to proactively switch virologically suppressed individuals to a more cost-effective HIV treatment.
METHODS: This prospective study implemented our ART algorithm in two large Dutch HIV clinics, where a pharmacist screened ART regimens for 1 year. Individuals were considered suitable for a switch if their current ART exceeded €600 per month, considering renal function and/or

Older persons with HIV (PWH) with comorbidities may experience increased perceived pill burden - a subjective experience of the demands associated with taking medications to sustain their health. The objective of this analysis was to examine the demographic, psychosocial, and HIV-related clinical factors associated with perceived pill burden in a sample of middle-aged and older PWH. Data came from men with HIV (MWH) aged ≥ 40 years from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study. Dependent variables were: [1] Pill frequency burden ("The number of times each day I am supposed to take my pills is too oft

AIM: Glomerular involvement in HIV-positive patients is quite heterogeneous. In the present paper we reviewed 73 renal biopsies performed during a period of more than 20 years in a single Nephrology Unit, Milan, Northern Italy, in order to evaluate the aspects of single types of glomerular lesions (including HIV associated nephropathy-HIVAN), grouped according to histological patterns and clinical presentation. Moreover, in the group of non-HIVAN patients, the possible differences in histological characteristics from non-HIV lesions were investigated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Renal tissues were

PURPOSE: The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) cohort of the Malawi Longitudinal Study of Families and Health (MLSFH-ACE) is a study of adolescents surveyed during 2017-2021. It provides an important opportunity to examine the longitudinal impact of ACEs on health and development across the early life course. The MLSFH-ACE cohort provides rich data on adolescents, their children and adult caregivers in a low-income, high-HIV-prevalence context in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
PARTICIPANTS: The MLSFH-ACE cohort is a population-based study of adolescents living in three districts in rural Malawi.

In China, the number of newly reported HIV infections in older people is increasing rapidly. However, clear information on the impact of older people on HIV transmission is limited. This study aims to reveal the local HIV transmission patterns, especially how older people affect virus transmission. Subtype analysis based on available pol sequences obtained from HIV patients revealed that CRF01_AE and CRF08_BC were predominant in patients aged <50 years, whereas CRF01_AE was predominant in older people aged ≥50 years (χ2 = 29.299, P < 0.001). A total of 25 patients (5.2%, 25/484) were identifie
