BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection presents high prevalence in developing countries, but there are few pediatric assays evaluating antimicrobial treatment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate Helicobacter pylori eradication rate using a short regimen (7 and 10 days) of triple therapy with clarithromycin, amoxicillin and omeprazole.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five Hp positive patients who presented severe epigastralgia, were submitted to antimicrobial treatment with amoxicillin (50 mg/kg/day--maximum dose 1 g bid), clarithromycin (30 mg/kg/day--maximum dose 500 mg bid

BACKGROUND: Multiple regimens for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori have been tested, but the best therapy has not been determined yet. To determine the efficacy of a new triple agent regimen using a combination of lansoprazole, amoxicillin, and clarithromycin against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), and to examine H. pylori resistance to this therapy in ineffective cases.
METHODS: We studied a total of 71 patients infected with H. pylori who had gastric ulcer (n = 37) or duodenal ulcer (n = 34) as confirmed by endoscopy. Patients received 1500 mg amoxicillin, 400 mg clarithromycin and 3

Gastric Helicobacter mustelae was present in 100% of 11 adult female ferrets (Mustela putorius furo). The high immunoglobulin G antibody levels to H. mustelae in all ferrets showed a significant immune response to the organism. Urease mapping of the ferret stomach indicated that the bacteria heavily colonized the proximal duodenum and antrum and, to a lesser extent, the corpus. The histological gastritis observed coincided with presence of H. mustelae. Superficial gastritis was noted in the oxyntic gastric mucosa, whereas in the distal antrum the chronic inflammatory response occupied the full

Hyperimmune bovine colostrum (HBC), produced by vaccination of a cow during gestation, is rich in targeted immunoglobulins, and can be used to treat a variety of diseases. The published history of HBC use for treating gastrointestinal infections in humans has developed over the past several decades and demonstrates the promise of this type of therapeutic for GI infectious disease. HBC, or purified derivative products, have been used successfully for treatment or prevention of cryptosporidiosis, shigellosis, rotavirus, enterotoxigenic E. coli, and C. difficile infection (CDI). Given the positiv

Mucous membrane of the gastroduodenal region of 104 patients with different pathologies (gastritis and erosive ulcerative alterations) was investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Examination of the biopsy material revealed frequent occurrence of pathogenic strains of Helicobacter pylori (up to 80%) and Herpesviridae (EBV, HHV 6, HHV 7, HHV 8) in various combinations. In such cases it is necessary to use adequate antibacterial and antiviral therapy with individual choice of immunomodulators.

For unclear reasons, there has been an increasing number of reported cases of Sarcina infections in the gastrointestinal tract over the past several years. Associated clinical conditions with the infection most commonly include delayed gastric emptying from diabetes mellitus, a history of previous gastrointestinal surgery, and ulcer disease. The precise pathogenetic role of Sarcina infection in humans remains unclear. Because of the ubiquitous environmental presence of Sarcina and limited previously reported clinical cases, the link between symptoms along with endoscopic findings to Sarcina ca

Infection with Helicobacter pylori is the strongest risk factor for the development of chronic gastritis, gastric ulcer and gastric carcinoma. The majority of the H. pylori-infected population remains asymptomatic, and only 1% of individuals may progress to gastric cancer. The clinical outcomes caused by H. pylori infection are considered to be associated with bacterial virulence, genetic polymorphism of hosts as well as environmental factors. Most H. pylori strains possess a cytotoxin-associated gene (cag) pathogenicity island (cagPAI), encoding a 120-140 kDa CagA protein, which is the most i

Helicobacter Pylori infection has been identified as a pathogenic factor in a number of gastroduodenal diseases, most importantly in gastric and duodenal ulcer disease. This association and the development of H. PYLORI eradication therapies has had a tremendous influence on the surgical therapy for these disorders. Decades ago, surgery was the therapy of choice for gastric and duodenal ulcers. Now, however, the first line of therapy includes treatment of H. PYLORI infection, suppression of gastric acid secretion, and protection of gastric mucosal barriers combined with a range of endoscopic pr

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the most common bacterial infections worldwide and a major cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. The outer membrane proteins (OMPs) of H. pylori play crucial roles in its pathogenesis, acting as key mediators of bacterial adhesion, immune evasion, and interactions with the host. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the various OMPs involved in H. pylori pathogenesis, including their roles as adhesins, porins, and in biofilm formation. Additionally, this review explores the involvement of OMPs in triggering proi

3-Arylfuran-2(5H)-one derivatives show good antibacterial activity and were determined as tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase (TyrRS) inhibitors. In a systematic medicinal chemistry exploration, we demonstrated chemical opportunities to treat infections caused by Helicobacter pylori. Twenty 3-arylfuran-2(5H)-ones were synthesized and evaluated for anti-H. pylori, antioxidant and anti-urease activities which are closely interconnected with H. pylori infection. The results displayed that some of the compounds show excellent antioxidant activity, and good anti-H. pylori and urease inhibitory activities. Out

Malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract are the most common causes of cancer-related deaths in Germany. They also induce significant morbidity. Despite both surgical and medical therapeutic improvements, advanced stages of these cancers can rarely be cured. Preventive and screening measures are suitable to decrease gastrointestinal cancer-related mortality. Weight reduction and cessation of smoking are effective in preventing esophageal, pancreatic and colorectal cancer. Treatment of infections like chronic viral hepatitis and helicobacter pylori gastritis is able to protect from hepatocell

Helicobacter pylori is a recognized cause of chronic active gastritis and is frequently associated with peptic ulcer disease, but its effect on acid secretion is unclear. Transient hypochlorhydria occurs with acute infections. Despite the theoretical possibility of an increase in parietal cell mass or a response to stimulation occurring secondary to the associated hypergastrinaemia observed with H. pylori, no consistent increase in basal, pentagastrin-stimulated acid secretion or 24-h intragastric acidity has been reported. Although H. pylori is accepted as one of the many factors involved in

OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal disorders are common in HIV-positive patients and, in some cases, may be related to antiretroviral therapy (ART), making it difficult to determine the need for upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopy. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether lymphocyte T CD4 cell counts were correlated with indications for endoscopy in these patients and with endoscopic diagnosis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We prospectively collected data from consecutive HIV-positive patients undergoing UGI endoscopy between 2007 and 2013, and included 265 patients who had been receiving A

Probiotics are defined viable microorganisms which in sufficient amount reach the intestine in an active state, to be able to exert positive health benefit on the host. Thus far, they have shown particular promise on prevention or treatment of various pathologic conditions. Our aim has been to report the most recent articles (until October 2008), resulting from randomized, double controlled trials, according to the conventional and molecular methods. In this review we have taken into consideration almost all the fields in which the probiotics have been given, either with a prophylactic or ther

Knowledge of the causes of a disease is essential to the effective alteration of factors affecting the disease's incidence. The history of the medical understanding of tuberculosis and peptic ulcer shows that we may neglect to consider the contribution of microorganisms to long-term or recurring diseases. The author presents evidence that we may similarly be overlooking the role of microorganisms in atherosclerosis. A collaborative, comprehensive investigation of the role of microorganisms in atherosclerosis is needed to understand the cause of this disease.

Bile acids modulate cell functions in health and disease, however, the mechanisms underlying their actions on neoplastic cells in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract remain largely unknown. In this issue of the JCI, Noto et al. comprehensively analyzed how interactions between Helicobacter pylori infection, iron deficiency, and bile acids modulate gastric inflammation and carcinogenesis. The investigators used sophisticated models, including INS-GAS mice with elevated serum gastrin and gastric acid secretion, in which H. pylori infection mimics human disease progression, to show that selected bile

While the incidence of gastric cancer in the United States is relatively low due to the diagnosis and treatment of the major risk factor Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), 5-year patient survival is only approximately 29%. Even after H. pylori infection has been eradicated there is still a risk of developing gastric cancer. Gastric cancer is the final clinical outcome that is often initiated by a sustained inflammatory response and altered epithelial cell differentiation and metaplasia in response to H. pylori infection. Identifying the early epithelial responses to H. pylori infection is import

Parietal cell antibodies were present in 12% of 272 Peruvians presenting for endoscopy. Gender, age, socioeconomic status, ethnic background (Peruvian versus Japanese), and altitude at which the patient lived were not associated with the presence of parietal cell antibodies. No significant relationship could be shown between the presence of parietal cell antibodies and either Helicobacter pylori infection or gastric lesions, including chronic atrophic gastritis. Loss of proper gastric glands was significantly more common in patients who had H. pylori infection than in those in whom no H. pylor

BACKGROUND: Hepcidin, a key regulator of iron homeostasis, is increased in response to inflammation and some infections, but the in vivo role of hepcidin, particularly in children with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) is unclear. We investigated the relationships between hepcidin, cytokines and iron status in a pediatric population with a high prevalence of both anemia and co-morbid infections.

Infections of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), cytomegalovirus (CMV), Helicobacter pylori, and Chlamydia pneumoniae may play a role in cognitive decline via systemic inflammation. We hypothesized that Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study participants who were seropositive in midlife for antibodies to HSV-1, CMV, H pylori, or C pneumoniae would have an accelerated rate of cognitive decline over 20 years. Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities performed a case-cohort study involving a stratified random sample of participants tested for serum immunoglobulin G antibodies to the pathogens of
