Pediatric restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder: parent-child pairs.

OBJECTIVE: Although recent publications have reported the occurrence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) and periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) in children and adolescents, the literature is relatively limited. The goals of this retrospective study were to (1) apply the recent International Classification of Sleep Disorders 2nd edition (ICSD-2) diagnostic criteria for RLS and PLMD in pediatric cases where periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) 5 per hour were found; (2) review parental history of RLS; and (3) further define the clinical characteristics of RLS and PLMD in a pediatric subgroup

Comparing childhood leukaemia treatment before and after the introduction of a parental education programme in Indonesia.

SETTING: Previously, treatment and the results of treatment for childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in Indonesia differed significantly between poor and prosperous patients. Poor patients received less individual attention from oncologists and access to parental education and donated chemotherapy was lacking. INTERVENTION: A structured parental education programme for both poor and prosperous parents was introduced in January 2004 to improve access to parental education and donated chemotherapy. The programme consisted of a video presentation, an information booklet, DVD, audiocasse

Vascular factors and markers of inflammation in offspring with a parental history of late-onset Alzheimer disease.

CONTEXT: Alzheimer disease (AD) is a complex disorder with a strong heritable component. Amyloid pathology, vascular factors, and inflammation are postulated to be involved in its pathogenesis, but causality has not been established unequivocally. OBJECTIVE: To identify heritable traits in middle age that contribute to AD. DESIGN: We used a proven family design, comparing middle-aged offspring with and without a parental history of AD. In such a design, the offspring under study are enriched for risk factors of AD but do not yet have the disease. SETTING: The Netherlands. PARTICIPANTS: Two

The effect of having an affected parent or sibling on invasive and in situ skin cancer risk in Sweden.

Studies suggest that skin cancer aggregates within families; however, the risk of skin cancer associated with having an affected sibling or parent by subtype, tumor site, and age at diagnosis has not been established. The 2006 update of the Swedish Family-Cancer Database was used to calculate standardized incidence ratios (SIRs), representing the ratio of cancer risk among individuals with affected parents or siblings to the general population. Risk of invasive squamous cell skin cancer for individuals with an affected sibling or parent was increased between two- and three-fold compared with t

Do parental reports of child hyperkinetic disorder symptoms at school predict teacher ratings?

BACKGROUND: Clinical practice guidelines for the evaluation of children with suspected hyperkinetic disorder or ADHD recommend that information is collected from teachers. METHODS: Using the development and well-being assessment, parents of 5-16 year olds participating in the 1999 and 2004 British Child and Adolescent Mental Health Surveys were asked about symptoms relating to hyperkinetic disorder and reports of teacher complaints about these symptoms. We examined whether parental reports about symptoms at school reflect teacher ratings and can be relied upon by clinicians. RESULTS: Parent

The role of parental psychopathology and family environment for social phobia in the first three decades of life.

BACKGROUND: To examine the role of parental psychopathology and family environment for the risk of social phobia (SP) in offspring from childhood to early adulthood, encompassing the high risk period for SP. METHODS: A community sample of 1,395 adolescents was prospectively followed-up over 10 years. Offspring and parental psychopathology were assessed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) using the Munich Composite International Diagnostic Interview (M-CIDI), and direct diagnostic interviews in parents were supplemented by family history reports. Parent-adolescent violence and later behavioral health problems among homeless and housed youth.

Parent-adolescent violence (i.e., violence between parents and adolescents) is an important pathway to homelessness and predicts poor behavioral health outcomes among youth. However, few studies have examined links between parent violence and outcomes among youth who are homeless. Existing research has also tended to ignore adolescent violence toward parents, despite evidence that mutual violence is common. The current study examines prospective links of parent-adolescent violence to outcomes among youth who were homeless and demographically matched youth, through two complementary substudies:

Psychiatric illness among a nationally representative sample of sole and partnered parents in New Zealand.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the excess risk of specific, diagnosable mental illnesses experienced by sole parents in New Zealand, and to estimate the contribution of socioeconomic position (SEP), co-residence with other adults (as a proxy for social and practical support) and physical health status to this excess risk. METHODS: Data used in the present study were from the New Zealand Mental Health Survey, a nationally representative population-based household survey of 12,992 adults (16+ years) fielded in 2004. The sample included 1216 sole and 3681 partnered parents living with one or more depend

'Jumping through hoops': parents' experiences with seeking respite care for children with special needs.

BACKGROUND: Respite care may act as a means to reduce stress and fatigue in people caring for a dependent who has a disability. Despite this, a variety of barriers may exist to obtaining such services. This study explored caregivers' experiences seeking respite care for their children with special needs within a province in Canada. METHODS: Caregivers were recruited from two agencies providing respite care for children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and other mental health and developmental difficulties. In total, 10 caregivers participated in in-depth individual interviews. A construc

Parental anxiety before and after food challenges in children with suspected peanut and hazelnut allergy.

As ingestion of peanut and hazelnut by allergic children is potentially life threatening, parents of these children need to be vigilant about their child's dietary intake. This may cause high levels of anxiety. To assess parental anxiety about food-allergic reaction in their child (state anxiety) and their personal disposition to anxiety (trait anxiety). Parental anxiety was investigated again after food challenges. Fifty-seven children (3-16 yr, mean age 7.2) with suspected peanut or hazelnut allergy (mean specific IgE 20.9) were evaluated by double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge (D

An apparent inconsistency in parent to offspring transmission of point mutations of LDLR gene in familial hypercholesterolemia.

BACKGROUND: Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH), the most common form of autosomal co-dominant hypercholesterolemia, is due to mutations in the LDLR gene, mostly minute or point mutations in the coding sequence. METHODS: Analysis of LDLR gene was performed by direct resequencing and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). RESULTS: LDLR gene resequencing showed that proband I.G., with the clinical diagnosis of homozygous FH, was homozygous for a mutation in exon 12 (c.1775 G>A, G571E) known to be pathogenic, and heterozygous for a mutation in intron 14 (c.2140 +5G>A). Oculodentodigital dysplasia: disease spectrum in an eight-year-old boy, his parents and a sibling.

Oculodentodigital dysplasia is an extremely rare autosomal dominant pleiotropic disorder caused by mutations in the Connexin 43 gene (GJA1). Described here is a previously undiagnosed case of an 8-year-old boy with enamel and dentin hypoplasia and typical faces. In this presentation, many typical clinical and radiographical features of this condition are present. The characteristic features include a typical face, premature loss of primary teeth and odontodysplasia of permanent teeth, clinodactyly, ocular signs, and CNS involvement. To our knowledge, the case that we report here is the first c

Pediatricians' role and practices regarding provision of guidance about sexual risk reduction to parents.

A randomly selected nationally representative sample of 508 practicing pediatricians was surveyed in order to identify factors associated with physician delivery of primary prevention to parents about sexual risk reduction (SRR). A full 86% (n = 435) reported that provision of SRR guidance is equally or more important than other guidance provided to parents. Among the 435, only 121 (28%) provided SRR guidance to >75% of parents of their adolescent patients. Multivariate analyses revealed barriers of: lack of training, lack of request from parents, and awkwardness. To promote parent-child commu

The dynamic relationship of parental personality traits with the personality and psychopathology traits of anorectic and bulimic daughters.

OBJECTIVE: Parenting and family dynamics influence the emergence, development, and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). Although family interventions are relevant for therapeutic programs, knowledge of the relationship between parental personality traits and the eating psychopathology of daughters is scarce. This study explored the personality and psychopathology of women with EDs and correlated them with parental personality traits. METHOD: The personality and eating psychopathology traits of 38 restricter anorectics, 30 bingeing/purging anorectics, 37 bulimics, and their parents' personal…

The formation of specific action plans can enhance sun protection behavior in motivated parents.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether formulating specific plans with regard to sunscreen use can influence parental sun protection behavior (i.e., applying sunscreen to their child). METHOD: In the spring of 2005, an electronic survey on sun protection behavior was performed among 436 parents in the Netherlands. Participants were randomly allocated to a 'questionnaire-only' control group or an experimental group, in which they were asked to formulate implementation intentions, i.e., specific action plans detailing when, where and how they would use sunscreen to protect their child from the sun in

Association of nail biting and psychiatric disorders in children and their parents in a psychiatrically referred sample of children.

BACKGROUND: Nail biting (NB) is a very common unwanted behavior. The majority of children are motivated to stop NB and have already tried to stop it, but are generally unsuccessful in doing so. It is a difficult behavior to modify or treat. The objective of this study was to investigate the prevalence of co-morbid psychiatric disorders in a clinical sample of children with NB who present at a child and adolescent mental healthcare outpatient clinic and the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in their parents. METHOD: A consecutive sample of 450 referred children was examined for NB and 63 (14

Six-year longitudinal predictors of posttraumatic growth in parentally bereaved adolescents and young adults.

Using the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, we examined posttraumatic growth in a sample of 50 adolescents and young adults who had experienced parental death in childhood or adolescence. Longitudinal relations were examined between baseline measures of contextual and intraindividual factors and scores on the posttraumatic growth subscales (i.e., New Possibilities, Relating to Others, Personal Strengths, Spiritual Changes, and Appreciation of Life) six years later. Controlling for time since death, threat appraisals, active coping, avoidant coping, seeking support from parents or guardians, seek
