Guidewire Manipulation Based on Establishment of Stereo Perception in Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Traditional percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) relies on two-dimensional X-ray imaging, but this does not allow depth perception and complicates precise manipulation of the guidewire. Our purpose was to develop a novel method for guidewire manipulation by establishing stereoscopic perception in coronary angiography (CAG), as described in our previous study, and thereby improve the precision and success rate of PCI. METHODS: Based on establishment of stereo perception in CAG, we used digital subtraction angiography (DSA) with gantry rotation and simulation with UG NX software

Robotic Plasma System for Rapid Activation of Mass-Produced Electrochemical Sensors.

Polishing, cleaning, and activation of solid electrode surfaces are common in electrochemistry; however, they are often labor-intensive, operator-dependent, and poorly reproducible. In the context of large-scale production of disposable solid-state sensors, such as screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), traditional surface conditioning procedures have proven to be impractical and incompatible with automated workflows. Here, we report the development of a low-cost robotic system that integrates a Tesla coil-based air-plasma generator with a Python-controlled XY motion platform for rapid (∼15 s per 0

Three-Dimensional Preoperative Planning of Corrective Osteotomies for Distal Radius Malunions: A Systematic Review of Clinical and Radiographic Outcomes.

Distal radius malunions (DRMs) are painful and functionally impairing, often necessitating surgical intervention to restore wrist anatomy and function. Traditional corrective osteotomies, which rely on orthogonal radiographs, may overlook complex deformities. This study aims to evaluate the techniques and effectiveness of 3-dimensional (3D)-planned corrective osteotomies, along with their clinical and radiographic outcomes. We conducted a systematic review of literature across PubMed, Ovid, EMBASE, and Web of Science for studies that implemented 3D planning in corrective osteotomies for DRM. W

Microneedle Designs for Trans-Tympanic Delivery of Topical Ototherapeutics.

Delivery of therapeutics to the middle and inner ear for the treatment of various otological pathologies is often inefficient using conventional methods. Systemic treatments may fail to reach therapeutically effective concentrations at the target site and can result in off-target effects, while local treatments typically require invasive methods such as intratympanic injections due to low tympanic membrane (TM) permeability. In this study, a series of TM transpermeation devices for topical delivery of ototherapeutics were designed, prototyped, and characterized. The devices were generated via

Effects of individually optimized rocker midsoles and self-adjusting insoles on dynamic stability in persons with diabetes mellitus and neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Persons with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) may face challenges such as balance issues due to reduced somatosensory feedback and an increased risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) due to increased plantar pressure. Pressure reducing footwear is thought to further impair balance. We introduced 3D-printed rocker midsoles and self-adjusting insoles that are able to reduce elevated plantar pressure values and aimed to prevent balance deterioration. However, their effect on the balance during walking (dynamic stability) is not analyzed yet. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is dynamic

Hybrid registration of the fibula for electromagnetically navigated osteotomies in mandibular reconstructive surgery: a phantom study.

PURPOSE: In mandibular reconstructive surgery with free fibula flap, 3D-printed patient-specific cutting guides are the current state of the art. Although these guides enable accurate transfer of the virtual surgical plan to the operating room, disadvantages include long waiting times until surgery and the inability to change the virtual plan intraoperatively in case of tumor growth. Alternatively, (electromagnetic) surgical navigation combined with a non-patient-specific cutting guide could be used, requiring accurate image-to-patient registration. In this phantom study, we evaluated the accu

Delayed Maxillary Reconstruction with Free Osteocutaneous Fibula Flap Using CAD-CAM Technology.

Background  Maxillary reconstruction poses unique challenges for the reconstructive surgeon because of the complex three-dimensional (3D) anatomy of the maxilla. Undertaking this endeavor on secondary reconstruction makes it more difficult due to problems in recreating the true defect. This study is an attempt to demonstrate the role of virtual surgical planning (VSP), 3D printing, and mock surgery in reconstructing such defects using free fibula flaps. Materials and Methods  This was a prospective study involving 10 patients of maxillary defects who underwent delayed reconstruction with a fre

Reading Vision in Adults With Early and Intermediate Age-Related Macular Degeneration Under Mesopic and Photopic Conditions.

PURPOSE: Reading is involved in various daily activities that operate under a wide range of luminance levels. Rod- and cone-mediated mesopic visual function is known to be impaired even in early/intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). It remains unclear whether and to what extent mesopic reading is impaired in early/intermediate AMD. Here, we assessed differences in reading vision between photopic and mesopic conditions in early/intermediate AMD and compared their performance to those in older adults with normal macular health. METHODS: The study included 30 patients with early/i

MRI-based training model for left atrial appendage closure.

PURPOSE: Percutaneous closure of the left atrial appendage (LAA) reduces the risk of embolic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. Thereby, the optimal transseptal puncture (TSP) site differs due to the highly variable anatomical shape of the LAA, which is rarely considered in existing training models. Based on non-contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) volumes, we propose a training model for LAA closure with interchangeable and patient-specific LAA enabling LAA-specific identification of the TSP site best suited. METHODS: Based on patient-specific MRI data, silicone model

Cigarette packaging, warnings, prices, and contraband: A discrete choice experiment among smokers in Ontario, Canada.

In Canada, despite substantial decline, tobacco use remains the leading risk factor responsible for mortality and morbidity. There is overwhelming evidence that higher tobacco taxes reduce tobacco use, even if high taxes create an incentive to avoid or evade tobacco taxes. Recently, in addition to taxes, plain and standardized packaging and printing a warning on each cigarette have been lauded to reduce tobacco use. In November 2019, Canada became the country with the most comprehensive cigarette packaging regulations; and in June 2022, Canada proposed to print health warnings on individual ci

Cryopreservation of Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus Sperm to Support Community-Based Repository Development for Preservation of Genetic Resources.

Hydractinia symbiolongicarpus is an emerging model organism in which cutting-edge genomic tools and resources are being developed for use in a growing number of research fields. One limitation of this model system is the lack of long-term storage for genetic resources. The goal of this study was to establish a generalizable cryopreservation approach for Hydractinia that would support future repository development for other cnidarian species. Specific objectives were to: (1) characterize basic parameters related to sperm quality; (2) develop a generalizable approach for sperm collection; (3) as

A Bendable Biofuel Cell-Based Fully Integrated Biomedical Nanodevice for Point-of-Care Diagnosis of Scurvy.

Fully integrated nanodevices that allow the complete functional implementation without an external accessory or equipment are deemed to be one of the most ideal and ultimate goals for modern nanodevice design and construction. In this work, we demonstrate the first example of a bendable biofuel cell (BFC)-based fully integrated biomedical nanodevice with simple, palm-sized, easy-to-carry, pump-free, cost-saving, and easy-to-use features for the point-of-care (POC) diagnosis of scurvy from a single drop of untreated human serum (down to 0.2 μL) by integrating a bendable and disposable vitamin C

Development and first clinical use of a novel anatomical and biomechanical testing platform for scoliosis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that, by using various three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies, synthetic spine models can be manufactured to mimic a human spine in its gross and radiographic anatomy and the biomechanical performance of bony and ligamentous tissue. These manufacturing processes have not, however, been used in combination to create a long-segment, biomimetic model of a patient with scoliosis. The purpose of this study was to describe the development of a biomimetic scoliosis model and early clinical experience using this model as a surgical planning and educ
