Factors Associated With Parenting Stress in Parents of Children With Nephrotic Syndrome: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Limited empirical studies were identified to quantify parenting stress in parents of children with nephrotic syndrome (NS). This cross-sectional study aimed to address this gap by examining the prevalence and factors associated with parenting stress. Two hundred two Chinese parents of children with NS were investigated by using the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF), the Parenting Sense of Competence Scale (PSCS), the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), and a demographic questionnaire. The results showed that parents of children with NS experienced higher parenting stress, and 67.8% of

Spinal cord injury in children.

The spinal injured child has speical needs owing to the processes of physical, mental and social growth. Goals of physical treatment programs include prevention of: genitourinary complications; contractures; pressure sores; long bone fractures, hip subluxation and dislocation; spinal deformity. Nonoperative treatment of spinal deformity employing external support should be initiated when the potential for spinal deformity exists. External support delays the development of spinal deformity, improves sitting balance and allows free upper extremity use. The overall treatment programs must conside

Importance of nutrition in palliative care of patients with chronic disease.

Good nutrition is important in caring for patients with life-limiting illness, not only for meeting the body's physical requirements but also because of its associated social, cultural and psychological benefits. A decision to provide nutritional care and support requires an understanding of and respect for patients' wishes, as well as an appreciation of their expectations and the benefits and burdens of such support. The patient, his or her family and healthcare professionals should openly discuss and agree the goals of nutritional care and support at an early stage, rather than waiting until

The Impact of Prematurity on Social and Emotional Development.

Behavioral and emotional problems are one of the most frequent chronic conditions diagnosed among children born prematurely. The high prevalence of these pathologies is a matter of concern because of their impact on family life, school performance, and social interaction, but also because of current limitations in early detection and access to treatment. This is a review of the various mechanisms by which premature birth affects social and emotional development, and a discussion about strategies that may help support emotional and social development in this high-risk population.

Confirmatory factor analysis of the Fear Questionnaire with social phobia patients.

BACKGROUND: The Fear Questionnaire is an internationally popular measure in anxiety disorder research, but its validity with social phobia patients has not been clearly demonstrated. METHOD: A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using the Fear Questionnaire responses of 122 social phobia patients. RESULTS: The results indicated that the proposed three-factor model of the scale (agoraphobia, social phobia, and blood/injury dimensions) provided a good fit to the data. CONCLUSIONS: These data provide strong support for the validity of the scale and for the multidimensional view of fears

The 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident resulted in the exposure to radiation and evacuation, which has created psychological distress among the Fukushima residents. With the provision of multi-faceted support and the progress of the reconstruction, their mental health has appeared to show signs of recovery. However, there have been few studies investigating their recovery. To clarify the related factors associated with mental health recovery, a cross-sectional questionnaire survey was conducted. Subjects whose answers were associated with Resilience, Recovery, and Remitting patterns of mental hea

Life history analysis of HIV/AIDS-affected households in rice and cassava-based farming communities in Northern Malawi.

The "New Variant Famine" hypothesis proposed that AIDS offers a major challenge to food security in this part of Africa by impairing the functioning of traditional support systems, leading to the collapse of "social immunity". This study explores the changing perceptions of HIV and AIDS and peoples' responses to its impact by eliciting life history narratives of 30 respondents in Northern Malawi. We classified respondents by means of gender, livelihood systems and AIDS impact levels. Respondents reported a range of critical events, recorded in the life histories, that threatened their "social

Latent variable model for suicide risk in relation to social capital and socio-economic status.

BACKGROUND: There is little evidence on the association between suicide outcomes (ideation, attempts, self-harm) and social capital. This paper investigates such associations using a structural equation model based on health survey data, and allowing for both individual and contextual risk factors. METHODS: Social capital and other major risk factors for suicide, namely socioeconomic status and social isolation, are modelled as latent variables that are proxied (or measured) by observed indicators or question responses for survey subjects. These latent scales predict suicide risk in the struc

The relationship between social dysfunctioning and psychopathology among primary care attenders.

The extent of social dysfunctioning and its relationship to psychological disorders among Dutch primary care patients was examined. Social dysfunctioning in these patients was rather limited, but was more pronounced in patients with a psychological disorder than in those without. Disabilities were largely restricted to the occupational and social roles, with family role functioning and self-care relatively intact. Social dysfunctioning was moderately related to psychopathology, with higher levels of dysfunctioning in more severe and depressed cases. The extent of social dysfunctioning among pa

Paternal involvement and support and risk of preterm birth: findings from the Boston birth cohort.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate to what extent paternal involvement and support during pregnancy were associated with preterm (PTB) and small-for-gestational age (SGA) births. METHODS: Using data from the Boston Birth Cohort (n = 7047), multiple logistic regression models were performed to estimate the log odds of either PTB or SGA birth, with paternal involvement, paternal social support, and family and friend social support variables as the primary independent variables. RESULTS: About 10% of participating mothers reported their husbands not being involved or supportive during their pregnancies.

Cost-effectiveness analysis of HPV vaccination: comparing the general population with socially vulnerable individuals.

BACKGROUND: After the WHO recommended HPV vaccination of the general population in 2009, government support of HPV vaccination programs was increased in many countries. However, this policy was not implemented in Korea due to perceived low cost-effectiveness. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze the cost-utility of HPV vaccination programs targeted to high risk populations as compared to vaccination programs for the general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each study population was set to 100,000 people in a simulation study to determine the incremental cost-utility ratio (ICUR), then

[Psychosocial and Practical Burdens Faced by Families with (Seriously) Ill Children and Adolescents in Lower Saxony: An Analysis of their Current Life Situation].

INTRODUCTION: Families with chronically ill or care-dependent children often face considerable organizational, psychosocial, and health-related burdens. At the same time, complex care structures and unclear responsibilities can hinder access to support services. This study aimed to describe the burden experienced by families with care-dependent children in Lower Saxony and to identify factors associated with key dimensions of parents' living situation. METHODS: In September 2024, postal questionnaires were sent to 600 families with care-dependent children (0-18 years) insured by AOK Lower Sax

A support programme for caregivers of children with disabilities in Ghana: Understanding the impact on the wellbeing of caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Four fifths of the estimated 150 million children with disability in the world live in resource poor settings where the role of the family is crucial in ensuring that these children survive and thrive. Despite their critical role, evidence is lacking on how to provide optimal support to these families. This study explores the impact of a participatory training programme for caregivers delivered through a local support group, with a focus on understanding caregiver wellbeing. METHODS: A qualitative longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the impact of a training programme,

Ventilator dependence and expressions of need: a study of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in Japan.

This research examined the experience of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients who depend on an invasive mechanical ventilator in Japan. We investigated their difficulties in expressing their needs, their desires and wishes, and their sources of support and happiness. We examined the relationship between these factors and patient demographics, and hope as an indicator of successful adaptation to the illness experience (assessed by the Herth Hope Index). Interview results guided the formation of an anonymous questionnaire distributed to patients by mail. We interviewed 27 patients and th
