Asperger's disorder in the emergency psychiatric setting.

Asperger's syndrome (AS) is a pervasive developmental disorder that may be unrecognized, especially if signs of other psychiatric disorders coexist. The objectives of this paper are: 1) to ascertain the prevalence of AS in the emergency psychiatric setting; and 2) to describe features of AS which may help to differentiate these patients from patients with psychotic disorders. Among 2500 patients admitted to a psychiatric intensive care unit, 5 (0.2%) received a diagnosis of AS, for the first time. Besides impairment of social interaction, common features were the following: male gender, left h

[Helicobacter pylori infection and cancer of the stomach].

Although the incidence of gastric cancer has declined in the past few decades in developed countries, it has remained one of the most frequent malignomas with high mortality. Epidemiological, clinical and basic research studies confirm the role of Helicobacter pylori in the pathogenesis of the tumors of the distal stomach and low-grade MALT lymphomas. On the contrary more and more data suggest a possible protective role of the infection in the gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, tumors of the cardia and adenocarcinoma of the distal oesophagus. The intensive research being done in the past few y

Biobehavioral research on coronary heart disease: where is the person?

This study examined the thesis that patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) comprise discrete personality subtypes and that identification of these subtypes may benefit biobehavioral research on CHD. Measures of Negative Affectivity, Social Inhibition, and Self-Deception were used to generate a personality taxonomy through cluster analysis in a sample of 405 men with CHD. This empirical taxonomy served as a basis for the development of a conceptual model which delineates hardy, distressed, inhibited, and repressive subtypes. Coronary proneness may differ across these subtypes to the extent

High blood pressure and marital discord: not being nasty matters more than being nice.

Theories linking anger and blood pressure (BP) reactivity to cardiovascular disease must be able to identify naturally occurring stressors that arouse emotion with sufficient frequency to cause chronic physiologic stress. We examine the impact of normal family arguments on 43 patients (24 women, 19 men) with essential hypertension. Patients and their partners discussed a threatening disagreement for 10 min while BP and conversation were recorded. Discussing problems increased BP, but the causal pathways differed by sex. In women, hostile interaction and marital dissatisfaction were associated

Xylitol ameliorates ASD-like behavior in Chd8+/- mice via modulations of the gut microbiome, neurotransmitters, and dendritic spine morphology.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition with complex etiology involving gut-brain axis interactions. It remains elusive how prebiotics modulate this axis to alleviate ASD symptoms. This study aimed to investigate whether xylitol, a potential prebiotic, improves behavioral and neural deficits in Chd8+/- mice, a genetic model of ASD, and to explore the associated roles of the gut microbiome, neurotransmitters and synaptic morphology in these effects. We found that Chd8+/- mice exhibited disrupted gut microbiota and imbalanced levels of key neuromodulators including indol

[Dental sociology as the background and validation framework of childhood oral health promotion programs].

Childhood oral health represents a significant global public health concern shaped by biological, behavioral, and social determinants. Dental diseases, particularly dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontal conditions, remain among the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide and are strongly associated with lifestyle factors, health literacy, socioeconomic status, and access to preventive services. This theoretical review aims to introduce the conceptual framework of dental sociology and highlight the importance of integrating social and behavioral perspectives into childhood oral health pr

Measurement Instruments to Assess Quality of Life in Pediatric Patients With Alopecia Areata: A Systematic Review.

Alopecia areata (AA) is an immune-mediated hair loss disorder that can affect various demographics, including pediatric patients, and in turn, severely impact self-esteem, peer interactions, and overall quality of life (QoL). Existing QoL tools, such as the Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI), address pertinent aspects of QoL including social and emotional well-being; however, they are not representative of the full scope of AA's impact. This systematic review aims to analyze existing QoL instruments in pediatric AA, evaluating their comprehensiveness and applicability, with ulti

Psychosocial and Cultural Correlates of Four-Dimensional Geriatric Depression Scale in Chinese and Korean Community-Dwelling Older Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Late-life depression is prevalent yet underdiagnosed among East Asian older adults, but cross-country comparisons of multidimensional depressive symptoms remain limited. METHOD: This secondary analysis included 427 community-dwelling adults aged ≥65 years from Xiamen, China, and Daejeon, South Korea. Country-specific stepwise regressions identified predictors for four Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) dimensions; pooled generalized linear models (GENLIN) tested Country × Predictor interactions. RESULTS: Perceived health showed stronger protective associations with agitation, dys

Capturing the implications of residential segregation for the dynamics of infectious disease transmission.

PURPOSE: Residential segregation is linked to racial and socioeconomic inequity in outcomes for numerous infections including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, STIs, and tuberculosis. Despite the importance of segregation as a driver of infection inequity, there are few mathematical models to inform our understanding of these dynamics. METHODS: We developed a transmission model including mechanistic relationships between residential segregation and infection inequity. We conceptualize segregation as a fundamental social cause of infection inequity that jointly impacts contact patterns and vulnerability

Psychological complications among patients with congenital bleeding disorders.

Congenital bleeding disorders (CBDs), including inherited platelet function disorders and rare and common bleeding disorders, are a heterogeneous group of bleeding disorders with a wide range of clinical presentations, including psychological complications. Due to the chronic nature of CBDs, psychological complications are relatively common in these patients, which can affect treatment adherence, quality of life, and even the frequency of bleeding episodes. Chronic pain causes many psychological problems in CBDs, disrupting their social interactions, affecting all aspects of their lives, inclu

Neural circuits underpinning face tuning in male depression.

Reading bodies and faces is essential for efficient social interactions, though it may be thought-provoking for individuals with depression. Yet aberrations in the face sensitivity and underwriting neural circuits are not well understood, in particular, in male depression. Here, we use cutting-edge analyses of time course and dynamic topography of gamma oscillatory neuromagnetic cortical activity during administration of a task with Arcimboldo-like images. No difference in face tuning was found between individuals with depression and their neurotypical peers. Furthermore, this behavioral outco

Role of Callous and Unemotional (CU) Traits on the Development of Youth with Behavioral Disorders: A Systematic Review.

UNLABELLED: Numerous studies have shown that youth with behavioral disorders (BD) present an increased risk for developing severe and persistent antisocial behaviors in adulthood. Retrospective research notes that not all children and adolescents follow a negative trajectory and explains this heterogeneity in particular by the severity of CU traits. Our study examines how these traits affect the functioning of children and adolescents with BD. METHOD: A systematic literature review conducted through various databases and using different keywords made it possible to analyze 52 studies publishe

Highly precocious activation of reproductive function in autumn-born goats (Capra hircus) by exposure to sexually active bucks.

Goats are seasonal breeders with the main cue controlling the timing of breeding season being photoperiod. Hence, the season of birth impacts puberty onset: spring-born goats reach puberty in autumn, at 7 mo of age, whereas autumn-born goats reach puberty at 1 yr during the next reproductive season. The aim of this study was to determine whether exposure of autumn-born young females to sexually active males could counteract the delay in puberty onset observed in autumn-born goats. Females exposed to sexually active males (n = 8) reached puberty earlier than isolated females (n = 8), with expos

Is urban living good for mental health?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The questions of urban living, mental health and well-being are complex issues correlated to many interacting factors. The purpose of this review is to provide data on mental health challenges of urban life and perspectives to address these challenges. RECENT FINDINGS: Urbanization may cause mental health problems, such as psychotic experiences, depression and stress-related disorders, particularly in vulnerable individuals. Challenges of urban living are even greater in developing countries, because of other urgent problems these countries are facing. New findings identifi

[Epilepsy, cognition and ketogenic diet].

INTRODUCTION: Most individuals with epilepsy will respond to pharmacologic treatment; however, approximately 20-30% will develop medically refractory epilepsy. Cognitive side effects of antiepileptic drugs are common and can negatively affect tolerability, compliance, and long-term retention of the treatment. Ketogenic diet is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for these children with refractory epilepsy without any negative effect on cognition or behavior. AIM: To review the current state of experimental and clinical data concerning the neuroprotective and cognitive effects of the ket

GPs' strategies in exploring the preschool child's wellbeing in the paediatric consultation.

BACKGROUND: Although General Practitioners (GPs) are uniquely placed to identify children with emotional, social, and behavioural problems, they succeed in identifying only a small number of them. The aim of this article is to explore the strategies, methods, and tools employed by GPs in the assessment of the preschool child's emotional, mental, social, and behavioural health. We look at how GPs address parental care of the child in general and in situations where GPs have a particular awareness of the child. METHOD: Twenty-eight Danish GPs were purposively selected to take part in a qualitat

Comparing the neural bases of self-referential processing in typically developing and 22q11.2 adolescents.

The investigation of self-reflective processing during adolescence is relevant, as this period is characterized by deep reorganization of the self-concept. It may be the case that an atypical development of brain regions underlying self-reflective processing increases the risk for psychological disorders and impaired social functioning. In this study, we investigated the neural bases of self- and other-related processing in typically developing adolescents and youths with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a rare neurogenetic condition associated with difficulties in social interactions and
