Isolated female epispadias without bladder exstrophy is a rare anomaly. We report a six-year-old girl who presented with urinary incontinence since birth and recurrent urinary tract infections. Examination revealed a bifid clitoris and a wide urethral opening. She underwent single-stage surgical repair via a perineal approach. Postoperatively, she achieved urinary continence with a good stream and could retain urine for 90-120 minutes. OBJECTIVE: To assess the use of an external urethral occlusion pad (the continence control pad, CCP) in the management of stress incontinence.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nineteen women (median age 47 years, range 36-72) complaining of stress incontinence were taught to use the CCP. The patients were assessed during the week before, and again after using the CCPs for 2 weeks, by urinary diaries, pad-tests and a review of their symptoms.

Stress incontinence in women may have many etiologies, of which the two primary ones are detrusor overactivity (urge incontinence), which is treated medically, and anatomic (pure) stress incontinence, which is treated surgically. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the involuntary leakage of urine associated with effort, exertion, sneezing or coughing (Abrams et al, 2002) and is the most common type of incontinence in women (Hampel et al, 2004). In 2005, NHS Greater Glasgow introduced a primary care management of SUI pathway. Lumbar disc prolapse with urinary dysfunction is an uncommon condition. The clinical, pathological and follow-up details of 30 patients are presented. Detrusor recovery is rare and most patients are left with an areflexic bladder. Female patients with lumbar disc prolapse and an areflexic detrusor who strain to empty their bladders are likely to develop genuine stress incontinence. This may be managed by the early institution of intermittent self-catheterisation, which may reduce the need for incontinence surgery.
