Indigenous Peoples' responses to evacuation for birth in Ontario: conceptualizing risk through an Indigenous midwifery-led approach.

BACKGROUND: Currently, pregnant Indigenous Peoples living in remote, rural, and northern Indigenous communities in Canada are subjected to evacuation birth policy, whereby they are evacuated out of their community to large, urban hospitals to give birth. Evacuation for birth is assumed to decrease biomedical risk because people are birthing in hospitals. In Canadian health systems, evaluating and mitigating biomedical risk has become a standard in health decision-making but this framework disregards Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies that guide Indigenous people in their evaluation of he…

The conversation around malnutrition: a qualitative study of dietitian and patient perspectives.

Malnutrition is prevalent among older adults in Canada and it can be mitigated through personalized dietitian-led counselling. This qualitative study aimed to explore how malnutrition is communicated and perceived, providing insight for future care. This multisite qualitative study was conducted in Alberta and Quebec, Canada. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling to target patients ≥65 years old who spoke French or English, had a malnutrition diagnosis, and received counseling for malnutrition from a dietitian. Dietitians who had worked directly with patients ≥65 years old wit…

Understanding the links between anxiety, depression, and sports betting: The mediating role of sports betting motivations.

Sports betting has grown in popularity in recent years in the US and Canada, and is now a major form of gambling. In the present research, we examined which motivations for sports betting mediated the association between emotional vulnerabilities (i.e., anxiety and depression) and sports betting and gambling problems. We recruited sports bettors in Ontario, Canada (final N = 915; 77.2 % men) and categorized them as in-play bettors (n = 221), single-event bettors (n = 531), and traditional bettors (n = 163). Participants completed an online battery of questionnaires measuring depression, anxiet…

Chasing cancer: does the social-to-medical spending ratio relate to cancer incidence and mortality in Canadian provinces? A retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada, and cases are expected to rise by 83% between 2012 and 2042. Jurisdictions with higher ratios of social-to-medical spending exhibit better population health outcomes; however, the connection between the ratio and both cancer incidence and mortality is not well established. We aim to determine the association between the ratio and both age-standardised cancer incidence and mortality. METHODS: Using linear regressions with provincial and yearly fixed effects, we measured associations between the ratio and incidence of the four most c…

"There's a little bit of mistrust": Red River Métis experiences of the H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics.

We examined the perspectives of the Red River Métis citizens in Manitoba, Canada, during the H1N1 and COVID-19 pandemics and how they interpreted the communication of government/health authorities' risk management decisions. For Indigenous populations, pandemic response strategies play out within the context of ongoing colonial relationships with government institutions characterized by significant distrust. A crucial difference between the two pandemics was that the Métis in Manitoba were prioritized for early vaccine access during H1N1 but not for COVID-19. Data collection involved 17 focus …

Exception points for liver transplantation: A Canadian review.

BACKGROUND: Exception points for liver transplant (LT) allocation are used to account for mortality risk not reflected by scoring systems such as the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease with sodium (MELD-Na). Currently, there is no formal policy regarding exception points in Canada, and differences across the country are not well understood. As such, a review of the criteria and exception points granted throughout the country for LT was conducted. METHODS: Seven LT centres in five provinces were surveyed (Vancouver, Edmonton, London, Toronto, Montréal, Halifax) regarding the indications and cri…

Grounding Wellness: Coloniality, Placeism, Land, and a Critique of "Social" Determinants of Indigenous Mental Health in the Canadian Context.

Authored by a small team of settler and Indigenous researchers, all of whom are deeply involved in scholarship and activism interrogating ongoing processes of coloniality in lands now known to many as Canada, this paper critically examines "social" and grounded determinants of Indigenous mental health and wellness. After placing ourselves on the grounds from which we write, we begin by providing an overview of the social determinants of health (SDOH), a conceptual framework with deep roots in colonial Canada. Though important in pushing against biomedical framings of Indigenous health and well…

Removing the men who have sex with men blood donation deferral: Informing risk models using Canadian public health surveillance data.

OBJECTIVE: Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM) were ineligible to donate blood in most countries since the 1980's. In Canada the deferral period has been incrementally decreased from lifetime to male-to-male sex in the last 3 months. Now a few countries have removed the deferral altogether. Risk models have been utilised to estimate the probability of an HIV positive donation being released into the blood supply and to inform incremental changes to the length of the deferral period. Here we use public health data to estimate the risk of HIV if the gbMSM deferral criteria …

Modeling Manifest Huntington's Disease Prevalence Using Diagnosed Incidence and Survival Time.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding the epidemiology of Huntington's disease (HD) is key to assessing disease burden and the healthcare resources required to meet patients' needs. We aimed to develop and validate a model to estimate the diagnosed prevalence of manifest HD by the Shoulson-Fahn stage. METHODS: A literature review identified epidemiological data from Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the USA. Data on staging distribution at diagnosis, progression, and mortality were derived from Enroll-HD. Newly diagnosed patients with manifest HD were simulated by applying annu…
