Crohn's disease and diverticulitis of the sigmoid may be combined in old patients, this association could lead to difficulties in diagnosis and treatment. Three cases of Crohn's colitis associated with diverticula, two females and one male, aged between 66 and 80 years are reported by the authors. In a review of the literature, some clinical, radiological and endoscopic findings may suggest the diagnosis, which guides subsequent treatment. A high morbidity is observed after surgery. In our series, sigmoidectomy cured both Crohn's colitis and diverticulitis.

The authors analyze the results of vaginal plasty with grafts from the rectosigmoid portion of the large intestine, carried out in 279 girls aged 3 to 18 with abnormalities of the genitals and vaginal aplasia, including that with a functioning uterus. Tumor-to-tumor metastases are rare occurrences. A 75-yr-old male presented with an enlarging axillary mass. Further investigation revealed an adenocarcinoma of the colon and a colonic polyp. Metastatic malignant melanoma was present within the colonic polyp and in axillary lymph nodes. Thirty-four patients with complete rectal prolapse were treated by Lahaut's operation in which the mobilised rectosigmoid was implanted in the posterior rectus sheath. There were no prolapse recurrences, but one patient died postoperatively. Of the 12 patients with incontinence, 11 were improved by the procedure. Lahaut's operation is a simple and effective procedure which avoids the potential problems associated with a surgical implant of Ivalon or Teflon.

Complications of diverticular disease are among the most common causes of all acute hospital admissions. The barium enema is the most important investigation in these patients, both for establishing the diagnosis and planning their management. However, few comprehensive reviews have described the radiological appearances of the complications of diverticular disease. We describe the radiological features and emphasize the diagnostic difficulties that may occur.

PURPOSE: Colonic volvulus constitutes a significant cause of large bowel obstruction in adults. Most studies of colonic volvulus come from high endemic zones and are limited by the small number of patients. In our region, there is a shortage of studies concerning this disorder, and treatment of colonic volvulus remains controversial.

BACKGROUND: We describe a simple endoscopic grading system of diverticular disease for the assessment of disease severity and prediction of outcomes.
