Prevalence of epigastric pain, heartburn and acid regurgitation in adolescents and their parents: evidence for intergenerational association.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Little is known of the epidemiology of upper gastrointestinal symptoms in adolescents. We examined the prevalence of, and the risk factors for, epigastric pain, heartburn and acid regurgitation in adolescents from Northern Ireland. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 1133 adolescents aged 12-18 years participated in this study. METHODS: Questionnaires were mailed to 2017 randomly selected individuals gathering information on symptoms of epigastric pain, heartburn and acid regurgitation. Prevalences of the symptoms in the individuals and their parents were calculated. Associations b

The effect of social support on mental and behavioral outcomes among adolescents with parents with HIV/AIDS.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the associations between social support and mental and behavioral outcomes among adolescents whose parents were infected with or died of HIV/AIDS. METHODS: Families (parents who were HIV infected and their adolescent children) were randomly assigned to a coping skills intervention or a standard care group. After completing the intervention, the parents and adolescents were assessed for 2 years. RESULTS: Adolescents who had more social support providers reported significantly lower levels of depression and fewer conduct problems; adolescents who had more negative influ

Changes in children's behavior and costs for service use associated with parents' response to treatment for dysthymia.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined differences in children's behavior and expenditures for health and social services used when their parents with dysthymia did or did not respond to antidepressant therapy. METHOD: Children ages 4 to 16 years of consenting parents enrolled in a treatment trial for dysthymia who did and did not respond to treatment were compared at baseline and 24 months. The responder was a parent with at least a 40% reduction in his or her baseline depressive symptoms using the Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale. Children's behavior was measured using the Child Behavior C

Stress and well-being among parents of children with rare diseases: a prospective intervention study.

AIM: This paper reports a study to assess stress, well-being and supportive resources experienced by mothers and fathers of children with rare disabilities, and how these variables were affected by an intensive family competence intervention. BACKGROUND: Despite diagnosis-specific studies, little overall knowledge exists about life-consequences for families of children with rare disorders. METHOD: We used a prospective design with baseline data and two follow-ups (at 6 and 12 months) after an intervention. The intervention aimed at empowering parents in managing their child's disability. Par

Impact of hostility and withdrawal in interparental conflict on parental emotional unavailability and children's adjustment difficulties.

This multimethod, prospective study examined the nature of pathways between interparental hostility and withdrawal, parental emotional unavailability, and subsequent changes in children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors, and school adjustment difficulties over a 3-year period in a sample of 210 mothers, fathers, and 6-year-old children. The results of autoregressive structural equation models indicated that interparental withdrawal had a detrimental impact on all areas of children's adjustment, whereas interparental hostility had an indirect effect on subsequent changes in child adju

Differences in prevalence of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema between parental and self-completed questionnaires in adolescents.

This study was undertaken to compare, for the first time in a developing country, the prevalence of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema in children aged 13-14 years when questionnaires from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) were independently completed by children and parents. A random sample of 3,178 children completed the ISAAC questionnaire at school, while in another sample of 3,387 children, the questionnaire was completed by their parents at home. The prevalence of asthma, rhinitis, and eczema symptoms was significantly higher when questionnaires were complete

Skills amongst parents of children with asthma: a pilot interventional study in primary care setting.

The increasing prevalence of childhood asthma has become a concern among health practitioners. Effective management emphasizes long-term management and inhaled therapy has become the mainstay home management for children. However, proper utilization of medication is pertinent in improving control. Proper asthma education is mandatory in improving skills and confidence amongst parents. To assess the skills of using the metered-dose inhaler (MDI) with a spacer among asthmatic children before and after educational intervention and to analyse any difficulties which may occur amongst the participan

The quality of parental consent for research with children: a prospective repeated measure self-report survey.

BACKGROUND: Researchers have ethical and legal responsibilities to ensure that individuals give informed consent to participate in research. The few studies of parental consent for paediatric research suggest there may be inadequate competence, information, understanding, or voluntariness for valid consent to occur. OBJECTIVES: To determine parents' level of understanding of the research study requirements and satisfaction with the informed consent process. PARTICIPANTS: English literate parents of children actively involved in research studies. METHODS: A repeated measures self-report surv

[Differences in small area prevalence of respiratory diseases in children: challenges of an investigation initiated by parents].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of respiratory diseases in children living in a rural area in Bavaria in a systematic and standardised way to clarify whether a disease cluster exists. Reports from a parents' initiative claiming an increase of diseased children and assuming an association with air pollution due to nearby industrial sources and heavy traffic were the reason for the study. METHODS: Parents of all children living in small towns specified by the parents' initiative as affected region (central area) and parents of those children aged 6-7 or 13-14 years

Acute traumatic stress symptoms in child occupants and their parent drivers after crash involvement.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1 in 4 children hospitalized with injuries from traffic crashes and their parents experience symptoms of acute stress disorder (ASD). These families represent a minority of those exposed to the trauma of a crash. To date, no studies have explored the prevalence of ASD symptoms in the broader population of children and parents exposed to crashes. OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of and risk factors for ASD symptoms in children and their driver parents after vehicle crashes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional study via telephone survey of parent d

Living-unrelated donors yield higher graft survival rates than parental donors.

BACKGROUND: Living-unrelated donors (LURD) have been shown to yield kidney graft survival rates equivalent to that of related donors. Here, we show that in three diseases, LURDs supply grafts that survive at a higher rate than parental or offspring donors. METHODS: We analyzed 111,643 first adult kidney transplants from the United Network for Organ Sharing database performed between 1991 and 2003 by Kaplan-Meier curves, log-rank tests, and Cox proportional hazard tests. RESULTS: Five-year kidney graft survival rates in patients receiving grafts from LURD, parental, and offspring donors were

Experiences of prenatal diagnosis of spina bifida or hydrocephalus in parents who decide to continue with their pregnancy.

The current study aimed to gain an understanding of the perspectives of those parents provided with a prenatal diagnosis of spina bifida or hydrocephalus and who decided to continue with their pregnancy. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 parents who learned of their unborn child's spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus in the prenatal period. The interviewer asked parents about their experiences of receiving a prenatal diagnosis and their experience of coping throughout the remainder of the antenatal period. Parents' reactions and experiences fell into five domains: response to diagnosi

Attitudes and risk perception of parents of different ethnic backgrounds regarding meningococcal C vaccination.

The aim of the present study is to assess the attitudes of parents toward vaccination as well as their risk perception of disease and vaccination. We interviewed 1763 parents of different ethnic groups (among others, Dutch, Turkish, Moroccan, and Surinamese parents). Results show that there were large differences in knowledge about disease and risk perception of disease and vaccination among parents of different ethnic backgrounds. Generally, people largely overestimated the risk of contracting the disease and the risk of dying after contracting the disease. Dutch parents were best informed, l

First national survey measures parents' opinions on the quality, content of well-child visits.

When it comes to pediatric checkups, parent satisfaction ratings appear to be strongly related to the content and quality of the care their children receive. However, only 57% of parents reported that their child received a developmental assessment screening procedure to detect disabilities that could compromise learning, social interactions, and other functions, according to a first-ever nationwide pediatric study.
