BACKGROUND: Acne vulgaris is an acute inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous units. The bastion of treatment for acne vulgaris has been the use of topical and systemic therapies. Despite many modalities available for treatment, there exists an imperative need for effective noninvasive treatments that reduce the risks of medication side effects.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Bufexamac is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug used in the topical treatment of atopic dermatitis, stasis dermatitis and perianal eczema. The substance is known to cause severe allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) as an adverse effect (AE), which may be indistinguishable from the eczema which is to be treated. Hence the diagnosis of this AE is often considerably delayed. In order to estimate the quantitative importance of ACD to bufexamac, data of the Information Network of (German) Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) from July 1999 to December 2004 were analysed.

Recent data suggested that daytime somnolence in patients with allergic rhinitis was secondary to disrupted sleep caused by nasal congestion. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the clinical presentation and natural history of chronic myringitis (CM).
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case review.
SETTING: Tertiary referral center.
PATIENTS: Chronic myringitis is defined as a loss of tympanic membrane epithelium for >1 month without disease within the tympanic cavity. Seven hundred fifty patient records were reviewed to determine the prevalence of CM in an academic otology practice. We retrospectively evaluated a consecutive series of 45 patients (45 eyes) who underwent trabeculectomy augmented with a single intra-operative 5 minute application of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU; 25 mg/ml). All patients were at an increased risk of subconjunctival fibrosis and surgical failure. The mean follow-up period was 24 months (range 12-42, SD 6.9).
