We describe a patient who had indocyanine green (ICG) staining of the anterior capsule for phacoemulsification of a traumatic cataract. Intraoperatively, the ICG extended into the posterior segment. Postoperatively, the patient developed ICG toxicity to the retina and had a vitrectomy to remove the ICG. We believe ICG extended into the vitreous through an area of zonular dehiscence.

Norrie disease is a rare, X-linked recessive disorder characterized by congenital blindness due to malformed retinas. We describe a simplex patient who had leukokoria and whose clinical diagnosis was confirmed only after molecular genetics analysis. DNA analysis was also used to determine the carrier status of relatives of the proband.

A primate eye affected by postoperative infectious endophthalmitis was studied early in the course of the disease. Retinal perivasculitis, vitreoretinal adhesions along the inflamed vessels, and traction of the partially separated posterior vitreous on the retina at the adhesion sites were observed. It is suggested that such vitreoretinal junction pathology may be responsible for the development of retinal detachment in infectious endophthalmitis.

The ophthalmic histopathology is detailed in a case of trisomy 18 (Edwards's syndrome). In addition to the ocular pathology already reported, previously unreported findings of iris stromal hypoplasia, abnormal lens shape, and decreased ganglion cells in the retina are noted. The ophthalmic histopathology associated with this syndrome and the relationship of several genetic disorders to their ocular manifestations are discussed.

No extravasation of sodium fluorescein from capillaries of the cerebral cortex and retina could be demonstrated in rats during severe nonlethal ethanol and/or acetaldehyde poisoning. The results do not exclude the possibility that repeated intoxications may gradually open the blood-brain and blood-retinal barriers, but do indicate the absence of an effect during acute intoxication.

In 40.8% of 169 eyes affected with diabetic preretinopathy (verified by fluorescein angiography) arteriovenous shunt vessels were found. These vessels occur with significant prevalence in eyes with areas of retinal capillary occlusions, and in cases with diabetes of long duration. There is strong evidence that AV shunts are a consequence of the occurrence of areas lacking capillary perfusion in the retina.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has enhanced our understanding and management of retinal diseases, ever since the time-domain OCT was introduced in the early 2000s. The introduction of spectral-domain OCT in the mid-2000s and the later introduction of swept-source OCT provided faster scanning strategies and high-resolution images of the retina and choroid.

Retinal astrocytic hamartoma is the most common ocular manifestation in tuberous sclerosis. Although astrocytic hamartomas are usually benign and stationary, there are occasionally circumstances when they are considered to be active. Retinal astrocytoma is an important ocular finding for diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis complex and is also an association of neurofibromatosis. A 46-year-old man presented with acute confusional syndrome, ataxia, dysarthria, and right hemiparesthesia. Brain MRI showed small bilateral infarcts and fluorescein angiography revealed multiple peripheral retinal infarcts bilaterally. No visual loss was present, and no other organs were involved. The diagnosis of Susac syndrome (microangiopathy of the brain, retina and cochlea) was made and immunosuppressive therapy begun.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease manifesting as hamartomatous involvement of several organs, including brain, kidneys, skin, heart, lungs, and retina. We report the first case of a patient with TSC, with large bilateral renal angiomyolipomas (AML), who developed multiple soft tissue masses within her primarily fatty AMLs, resulting from metastatic breast cancer.

We report two patients who developed varicella zoster virus (VZV) ophthalmicus complicated by ipsilateral keratouveitis, and within 4 weeks developed acute retinal necrosis (ARN) in the contralateral eye. The ipsilateral retina was spared in each case. One patient had systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and the other Hodgkin's disease. Both patients were in remission at the time of presentation.

A patient with refractory glaucoma 1 year after cataract extraction and trabeculectomy had Molteno implant surgery. Three days after surgery a kissing choroidal effusion and retinal detachment adherent to the posterior chamber IOL were detected. Repeated choroidal taps were unsuccessful. Removal of the Molteno implant, vitrectomy, and silicone oil injection were required to reattach the retina.

Retinitis pigmentosa is a subset of inherited diseases associated with progressive degeneration of the retina otherwise classified as retinal dystrophies. Clinically, patients have nyctalopia (night blindness), progressive visual field loss, and eventually loss of central vision. Patients with retinitis pigmentosa should be evaluated for other ocular conditions that may simulate the condition, as well as for systemic disorders.

Using paraxial equations, the change in dioptric power of the crystalline lens required to image objects at given distances from the eye, on the retina, is calculated. This shows that the depth of the anterior chamber affects crystalline lens accommodation more than other variables. The relationship between anterior chamber depth and presbyopia, and a possible geographical aspect, are discussed.

Six eyes with optic nerve pit and associated sensory retinal detachment of the macula were treated using a management plan that utilized a combination of techniques including laser photocoagulation, pars plana vitrectomy, and intraocular air/fluid exchange. In each treated eye the retina was eventually flattened. This paper discusses this plan of management and series of treatment modalities.

The value of scatter xenon-arc endophotocoagulation in stabilising eyes with respect to post-operative rubeosis iridis and vitreous haemorrhage is demonstrated in a consecutive series of 100 vitrectomies undertaken for diabetic vitreous haemorrhage. Seventy eyes ultimately achieved 6/36 or better vision. Endophotocoagulation of untreated ischaemic retina is recommended in eyes undergoing vitrectomy for diabetic vitreous haemorrhage.

A study of 62 untreated eyes of 54 diabetic patients with peripheral neovascularisation is reported. The study shows that neovascularisation rarely remains confined to one sector of the retina; 18% of eyes had developed disc new vessels within one year, 27% had a vitreous haemorrhage within five years, and 10% developed either macular traction or a retinal detachment.
