Beyond building better brains: bridging the docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) gap of prematurity.

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are essential for normal vision and neurodevelopment. DHA accretion in utero occurs primarily in the last trimester of pregnancy to support rapid growth and brain development. Premature infants, born before this process is complete, are relatively deficient in this essential fatty acid. Very low birth weight (VLBW) infants remain deficient for a long period of time due to ineffective conversion from precursor fatty acids, lower fat stores and a limited nutritional provision of DHA after birth. In addition to l

Measuring the quality of vision after cataract surgery.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to report some of the latest advances in visual acuity measurements and to review key articles on quality of visual after cataract surgery with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. RECENT FINDINGS: Different quality of life instruments were used in the most recent studies and showed improvements in subjective quality of vision after cataract surgery with or without ocular comorbidities and independent of the type of IOL implanted. The use of multifocal IOLs improved near vision without any adverse effect on distance acuity. Contrast sensitivity

Reducing visual deficits caused by refractive errors in school and preschool children: results of a pilot school program in the Andean region of Apurimac, Peru.

BACKGROUND: Refractive error is defined as the inability of the eye to bring parallel rays of light into focus on the retina, resulting in nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (Hyperopia) or astigmatism. Uncorrected refractive error in children is associated with increased morbidity and reduced educational opportunities. Vision screening (VS) is a method for identifying children with visual impairment or eye conditions likely to lead to visual impairment. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the utility of vision screening conducted by teachers and to contribute to a better estimation of the prevalence

The role of the caudal superior parietal lobule in updating hand location in peripheral vision: further evidence from optic ataxia.

Patients with optic ataxia (OA), who are missing the caudal portion of their superior parietal lobule (SPL), have difficulty performing visually-guided reaches towards extra-foveal targets. Such gaze and hand decoupling also occurs in commonly performed non-standard visuomotor transformations such as the use of a computer mouse. In this study, we test two unilateral OA patients in conditions of 1) a change in the physical location of the visual stimulus relative to the plane of the limb movement, 2) a cue that signals a required limb movement 180° opposite to the cued visual target location, o

Phototransduction in Drosophila.

The Drosophila visual transduction is the fastest known G protein-coupled signaling cascade and has been served as a model for understanding the molecular mechanisms of other G protein-coupled signaling cascades. Numbers of components in visual transduction machinery have been identified. Based on the functional characterization of these genes, a model for Drosophila phototransduction has been outlined, including rhodopsin activation, phosphoinoside signaling, and the opening of TRP and TRPL channels. Recently, the characterization of mutants, showing slow termination, revealed the physiologic

Combinatorial therapy stimulates long-distance regeneration, target reinnervation, and partial recovery of vision after optic nerve injury in mice.

The optic nerve has been widely studied for insights into mechanisms that suppress or promote axon regeneration after central nervous system injury. Following optic nerve damage in adult mammals, retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) normally fail to regenerate their axons, resulting in blindness in patients who suffer from neurodegenerative diseases such as glaucoma or who have sustained traumatic injury to the optic nerve. Over the past several decades, many groups have investigated the basis of regenerative failure in the hope of developing strategies to stimulate the regrowth of axons and restore

Expanding and contracting optic-flow patterns and vection.

When stationary observers view an optic-flow pattern, visually induced self-motion perception (vection) and a form of motion sickness known as simulator sickness (SS), can result. Previous results suggest that an expanding flow pattern leads to more SS than a contracting pattern. Sensory conflict, a possible cause of SS, may be more salient when an expanding optic-flow pattern is viewed. An experiment was conducted to test if a more salient sensory conflict accompanying expanding flow patterns might inhibit vection. Participants (n = 15) viewed a pattern of blue squares, either steadily expand

Extrapolation of visual motion for manual interception.

We examine the potential to treat unstable ventilatory control (seen in periodic breathing, Cheyne-Stokes respiration, and central sleep apnea) with carefully controlled dynamic administration of supplementary CO(2), aiming to reduce ventilatory oscillations with minimum increment in mean CO(2). We used a standard mathematical model to explore the consequences of phasic CO(2) administration, with different timing and dosing algorithms. We found an optimal time window within the ventilation cycle (covering approximately 1/6 of the cycle) during which CO(2) delivery reduces ventilatory fluctuati

[Examination of dynamic body balance using the body tracking test in cases of vestibular neuronitis].

Body Tracking Test (BTT) is a testing method of the dynamic body balance function wherein movement of the center of gravity in accordance with a moving visual target stimulus is examined to evaluate the tracking function of the body. The objects were the patients who were diagnosed as having vestibular neuronitis at the Department of Otolaryngology in Toho University medical center Sakura hospital, and were undergoing hospital treatment. Lateral BTT was performed in 31 subjects, and antero-posterior (A-P) BTT in 45 subjects. Although gaze nystagmus was noted, inspection was enforced when a sta

Resting state oscillatory brain dynamics in Parkinson's disease: an MEG study.

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiological mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction and dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD) are still poorly understood. Altered resting state oscillatory brain activity may reflect underlying neuropathological changes. The present study using magneto encephalography (MEG) was set up to study differences in the pattern of resting state oscillatory brain activity in groups of demented and non-demented PD patients and healthy, elderly controls. METHODS: The pattern of MEG background oscillatory activity was studied in 13 demented PD patients, 13 non-demented PD patients and 1

Direct neurophysiological evidence for spatial suppression surrounding the focus of attention in vision.

The spatial focus of attention has traditionally been envisioned as a simple spatial gradient of enhanced activity that falls off monotonically with increasing distance. Here, we show with high-density magnetoencephalographic recordings in human observers that the focus of attention is not a simple monotonic gradient but instead contains an excitatory peak surrounded by a narrow inhibitory region. To demonstrate this center-surround profile, we asked subjects to focus attention onto a color pop-out target and then presented probe stimuli at various distances from the target. We observed that t

Inferring myopia over the lifecourse from uncorrected distance visual acuity in childhood.

AIM: To report the usefulness of uncorrected distance visual acuity (DVA) at 16 years to "screen" for myopia status and to assess the lifetime risk of myopia, based on a national birth cohort. METHODS: 1867 members of the 1958 British birth cohort for whom there were data on acuity at 16 years had autorefraction, as part of a biomedical survey, at 45 years. Reduced uncorrected DVA at age 16 years (6/12 or worse in both eyes) was compared with adult refraction (spherical equivalent). RESULTS: Only a quarter of individuals in the population studied who had developed myopia by 45 years of age h

Training-induced plasticity of auditory localization in adult mammals.

Accurate auditory localization relies on neural computations based on spatial cues present in the sound waves at each ear. The values of these cues depend on the size, shape, and separation of the two ears and can therefore vary from one individual to another. As with other perceptual skills, the neural circuits involved in spatial hearing are shaped by experience during development and retain some capacity for plasticity in later life. However, the factors that enable and promote plasticity of auditory localization in the adult brain are unknown. Here we show that mature ferrets can rapidly r

Coordination of feeding, locomotor and visual systems in parrotfishes (Teleostei: Labridae).

Fishes require complex coordinated motions of the jaws, body and fins during feeding in order to successfully execute the strike or bite and then move away from the predation site. In conjunction with locomotor systems, sensory modalities guide coordinated feeding behavior, with vision playing an important role in many fishes. Although often studied separately, the locomotor, feeding and visual systems have not previously been examined together during fish feeding. To explore feeding coordination, we examined the kinematics of feeding behavior in two species of herbivorous parrotfish, Sparisom

Postural instability in Meniere's disease.

In order to characterize the postural instability by duration of Meniere's disease (MD) we present the results of 180 MD patients tested on posturography. The duration of the disease varied from 4 weeks to 36 years. The patients were clinically examined and they had filled a questionnaire concerning their symptoms. Postural instability was examined by a force platform posturography and the results are expressed as sway velocities (SV). There was no statistically significant difference in the mean SV between groups of different duration of MD. The number of the patients with normal eyes open SV

Cerebellar lesions and prism adaptation in macaque monkeys.

If a laterally displacing prism is placed in front of one eye of a person or monkey with the other eye occluded, they initially will point to one side of a target that is located directly in front of them. Normally, people and monkeys adapt easily to the displaced vision and correct their aim after a few trials. If the prism then is removed, there is a postadaptation shift in which the subject misses the target and points in the opposite direction for a few trials. We tested five Macaque monkeys for their ability to adapt to a laterally displacing prism and to show the expected postadaptation
