The Use of interRAI Scales Across Healthcare Settings: Building a Bridge Between Evidence and Practice.

Equitable and effective service and policy decisions require reliable evidence-based information; interRAI assessments offer objective data across broad health determinants for multiple purposes. This article aims to highlight selected embedded scales and algorithms and illustrate their prevalence across settings using Canadian data. Ten measures are described along with examples of subsequent use in predicting outcomes, adverse events, and resource utilization across diverse populations and jurisdictions. Prevalence rates for nine scales and algorithms were available across home and community

Transcriptional analysis of metastatic hormone-naïve prostate cancer primary tumor biopsies reveals a relevant role for SOX11 in prostate cancer cell dissemination.

BACKGROUND: Metastatic hormone-naïve prostate cancer (mHNPC) is an infrequent form of this tumor type that is characterized by metastasis at the time of diagnosis and accounts for up to 50% of prostate cancer-related deaths. Despite the extensive characterization of localized and metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, the molecular characteristics of mHNPC remain largely unexplored. RESULTS: Here, we provide the first extensive transcriptomics characterization of primary tumor specimens from patients with mHNPC. We generate discovery and validation bulk and single-cell RNA-seq datas

Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement: a narrative review of best practices for perioperative management of patients with bleeding disorders.

Patients with bleeding disorders comprise a population at elevated risk of adverse events in the perioperative period. Patients might have been previously diagnosed with bleeding disorders or be suspected of having an underlying bleeding disorder. Because of the rarity of these diseases, perioperative management of these patients requires carefully orchestrated multidisciplinary care to prevent adverse outcomes. We present a practical and clinically relevant approach to patients with suspected and known inherited bleeding disorders. For patients with more common bleeding disorders such as von

Tick-Borne Diseases in Urban and Periurban Areas: A Blind Spot in Research and Public Health.

Tick-borne zoonotic diseases continue to emerge in North America and Europe. Of particular concern are pathogens transmitted by Ixodes ticks, such as Borrelia spp., the causal agents of Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis). Because Ixodes ticks are adapted to forested habitats with high humidity and depend on wildlife for feeding and movement, research has focused on natural or rural landscapes. Demographic and land-use transitions, however, have created novel ecosystems in urban and periurban areas with high potential for human exposure. We describe post-World War II land processes giving rise to

Involvement of the anterior insula and frontal operculum during wh-question comprehension of wh-in-situ Korean language.

In this research, we employed functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine the neurological basis for understanding wh-questions in wh-in-situ languages such as Korean, where wh-elements maintain their original positions instead of moving explicitly within the sentence. Our hypothesis centered on the role of the salience and attention network in comprehending wh-questions in wh-in-situ languages, such as the discernment of wh-elements, the demarcation between interrogative types, and the allocation of cognitive resources towards essential constituents vis-à-vis subordinate elements

Pre-anaesthesia assessment in cataract surgery: Recommendations from the SEDAR Working Group.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures in outpatient surgery units. The use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in clinical practice and the advent of new health scenarios, such as the Covid pandemic, have driven the development of pre-anaesthesia assessment models that free up resources to improve access to cataract surgery without sacrificing patient safety. The approach to cataract surgery varies considerably among public, subsidised and private hospitals. This raises the need for guidelines to standardise patient assessment, pre-o

Enhanced methane production from waste activated sludge by potassium ferrate combined with thermal hydrolysis pretreatment.

Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) was one of the directions of sludge treatment, but how to effectively improve the production of methane as a resource product of anaerobic digestion of sludge still needs further research. The study examined how the combination of potassium ferrate (PF) and thermal hydrolysis (TH) pretreatment affected methane production from sludge. The results demonstrated a positive synergistic effect on methane production with PF-TH pretreatment. Specifically, by employing a 0.05 g/g TSS (total suspended solids) PF in conjunction with TH at 80 °C for 30 m

Exploring the need for surgical face masks in operating room: a comprehensive literature review.

Surgical face masks (SFM) are pivotal in preventing surgical site infections (SSI) in the operating room (OR). However, there are currently no specific recommendations for their most effective use. SFM effectiveness is influenced by factors such as material, fit, and duration of use, sparking ongoing debates about their benefits and risks in surgery. SFMs act as a protective barrier, but their ability to filter out harmful compounds is questioned. They can also impact communication and create a false sense of security. Nevertheless, SFMs aid in infection prevention and provide psychological co

Tuberculosis treatment and undernutrition on Daru Island, Papua New Guinea: A qualitative exploration of a local foodscape.

A substantial proportion of people with tuberculosis (TB)-one of the world's deadliest infectious diseases-live in resource-poor, food insecure settings. It is widely recognised that undernutrition significantly heightens vulnerability to TB, as well as contributes to poor treatment adherence and outcomes. However, more attention is needed to understand what shapes food insecurity and undernutrition in a particular setting. We use the concept of "foodscapes" to explore the distinct food environment on Daru Island, a recognised "hotspot" for multidrug-resistant TB in the Western Province of Pap

An anatomical and connectivity atlas of the marmoset cerebellum.

The cerebellum is essential for motor control and cognitive functioning, engaging in bidirectional communication with the cerebral cortex. The common marmoset, a small non-human primate, offers unique advantages for studying cerebello-cerebral circuits. However, the marmoset cerebellum is not well described in published resources. In this study, we present a comprehensive atlas of the marmoset cerebellum comprising (1) fine-detailed anatomical atlases and surface-analysis tools of the cerebellar cortex based on ultra-high-resolution ex vivo MRI, (2) functional connectivity and gradient pattern

Community-Acquired Pseudomonas aeruginosa Meningitis in a Pediatric Patient.

This case report presents a rare and significant case of community-acquired Pseudomonas aeruginosa meningitis in a healthy 13-month-old male patient in rural Liberia. Pseudomonas aeruginosa meningitis, particularly in the absence of predisposing factors, is a rare occurrence with a high mortality rate. The challenges in diagnosing this condition, especially in resource-limited settings, are highlighted. The patient initially presented with fever, seizures, and altered consciousness, and lumbar puncture revealed turbid cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with elevated white blood cell count. Subsequent C

Cancer Disparities among Pacific Islanders: A Review of Sociocultural Determinants of Health in the Micronesian Region.

It is well appreciated that the social determinants of health are intimately related with health outcomes. However, there is a paucity of literature that explores these themes comprehensively for the indigenous people within Micronesia. Certain Micronesia-specific factors, such as transitions from traditional diets, the consumption of betel nut, and exposure to radiation from the nuclear bomb testing in the Marshall Islands, have predisposed certain Micronesian populations to an increased risk of developing a variety of malignancies. Furthermore, severe weather events and rising sea levels att
