Genomic diversity of Pseudomonas aeruginosa causing bacteremic pneumonia in an intensive care unit, with emergence of an OXA-796-producing NDM-1 ST773 isolate.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremic pneumonia carries exceptionally high mortality, yet there is a paucity of genomic characterization of the strains causing this infection. We performed hybrid sequencing (Illumina and Oxford Nanopore) of 12 non-redundant P. aeruginosa isolates from patients with severe bacteremic pneumonia admitted to the intensive care unit of a tertiary hospital between 2015 and 2023. The 12 isolates were assigned to nine distinct sequence types, suggesting that severe bacteremic pneumonia can arise from diverse P. aeruginosa lineages rather than being dominated by a single s

Association Between Admission Complete Blood Count-Derived Inflammatory Markers and Mortality in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Patients: A Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Complete blood count (CBC)-derived inflammatory markers are readily available, inexpensive indices of systemic inflammation. This study evaluated their association with mortality in a heterogeneous neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) population. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included neonates admitted to a mixed level II and III NICU between 2022 and 2026. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) were calculated from admission CBCs. Associatio

A Retrospective Evaluation of the Effects of Cumulative Fluid Balance on Mortality and Morbidity in Critically Ill Patients in a Tertiary Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Brisbane, Australia.

Introduction The administration of fluid therapy and fluid management is common in the intensive care unit (ICU). There is an increasing trend toward an association between fluid balance and patient outcomes, including mortality. Despite extensive research, the best approach to fluid management remains uncertain. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that a more positive cumulative fluid balance (CFB) is associated with increased hospital mortality in ICU patients. Design and setting This is a single-center retrospective cohort study conducted at a tertiary ICU (PAH; Brisbane, Australia) fro

Comparison of Cultures and 16S/18S Amplicon-Based Microbiome Analyses for Diagnosing Nosocomial Pneumonia in Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit-An Exploratory Study.

Background: Nosocomial pneumonia (NP) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Prior antibiotic use, polymicrobial infections, and the limitations of conventional microbiological methods often complicate an accurate diagnosis. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and tracheal suction (TS) are commonly used methods for collecting respiratory samples; however, their diagnostic accuracy can vary. Additionally, microbiome analysis using 16S/18S rRNA gene sequencing provides an alternative approach for identifying pathogens that are difficult to culture. This
