Sexually transmitted dermatophytosis - what do we know about epidemiology, transmission, and treatment of this emerging class of STI?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sexually transmitted dermatophytosis represents an emerging and underrecognized clinical entity within the broader context of sexually transmitted infections. RECENT FINDINGS: Traditionally transmitted through direct or indirect contact, certain dermatophyte species - particularly Trichophyton mentagrophytes ITS-genotype VII and Trichophyton indotineae - are increasingly implicated in infections among sexually active populations, especially men who have sex with men. These infections often present with atypical and highly inflammatory lesions, mimic common dermatoses, and p

Pharmacological Considerations during Percutaneous Treatment of Heart Failure.

Heart Failure (HF) remains a global health challenge, marked by its widespread prevalence and substantial resource utilization. Although the prognosis has improved in recent decades due to the treatments implemented, it continues to generate high morbidity and mortality in the medium to long term. Interventional cardiology has emerged as a crucial player in HF management, offering a diverse array of percutaneous treatments for both acute and chronic HF. This article aimed to provide a comprehensive review of the role of percutaneous interventions in HF patients, with a primary focus on key fea

Association of socioeconomic indicators with COVID-19 mortality in Brazil: a population-based ecological study.

The article presents an analysis of the spatial distribution of mortality from COVID-19 and its association with socioeconomic indicators in the north-eastern region of Brazil - an area particularly vulnerable with regard to these indicators. This populationbased ecology study was carried out at the municipal level in the years 2020 and 2021, with analyses performed by spatial autocorrelation, multiple linear regression and spatial autoregressive models. The results showed that mortality from COVID-19 in this part of Brazil was higher in the most populous cities with better socioeconomic indic

A framework for identifying fertility gene targets for mammalian pest control.

Fertility-targeted gene drives have been proposed as an ethical genetic approach for managing wild populations of vertebrate pests for public health and conservation benefit. This manuscript introduces a framework to identify and evaluate target gene suitability based on biological gene function, gene expression, and results from mouse knockout models. This framework identified 16 genes essential for male fertility and 12 genes important for female fertility that may be feasible targets for mammalian gene drives and other non-drive genetic pest control technology. Further, a comparative genomics

Bagassosis- An Infrequent Type of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis: A Case Report.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an umbrella term for a spectrum of disorders caused by the inhalation of organic dust or low molecular weight chemicals. Bagassosis, a rare form of HP, is an allergic reaction caused by inhalation of bagasse dust, which is used in manufacturing several products. Very few cases of bagassosis have been reported in India, owing to the growing industrialization adapting organized sectors for preventing occupational health disorders. Nevertheless, a small population is being exposed to bagasse dust, shadowed by inadequate protective equipment, leading to the occ

The epidemiology, impact, and diagnosis of micronutrient nutritional dermatoses part 1: Zinc, selenium, copper, vitamin A, and vitamin C.

Dermatologists play a critical role in diagnosing and managing nutritional deficiencies as they often present with cutaneous findings. Traditionally, nutritional dermatoses are taught in the context of developing countries, famine, population displacement, and poor health care access; however, in the United States, common risk factors include chronic liver disease, alcoholism, psychiatric disease, bariatric surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, and hemodialysis. Additionally, nutritional dermatoses may be underdiagnosed in the United States and result in increased morbidity and utilization of h

The treatment of cocaine use disorder.

Cocaine use continues to be a serious worldwide public health problem. Cocaine abuse is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Cocaine overdose deaths are increasing in the United States and, in certain populations, outnumber heroin and opiate overdose deaths. Psychosocial treatments remain the treatments of choice for cocaine use disorder (CUD), with standard approaches including contingency management and cognitive behavioral therapy. However, the effect sizes of these treatments are not large, and they are not effective for most patients. Consequently, investigators have sough

Evidence-Based Practice Guideline: Delirium.

Delirium is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitalized older adults often superimposed on dementia. Older patients with delirium are more likely than other populations to develop hospital-acquired infections, pressure ulcers, and immobility and nutritional issues, as well as to have increased health care costs, longer hospital stays, and long-term care following discharge. Interventions that prevent or mitigate the effects of delirium while promoting recovery are essential for caring for hospitalized older patients. This article is a summary of an evidence-based guideline that i

Melioidosis in Singapore: Clinical, Veterinary, and Environmental Perspectives.

Melioidosis is a notifiable infectious disease registered with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA), Singapore. From a clinical perspective, increased awareness of the disease has led to early detection and treatment initiation, thus resulting in decreasing mortality rates in recent years. However, the disease still poses a threat to local pet, zoo and farm animals, where early diagnosis is a challenge. The lack of routine environmental surveillance studies also makes prevention of the disease in animals difficult. To date, there have been no reports that

Challenges in Facing the Lung Cancer Epidemic and Treating Advanced Disease in Latin America.

Lung cancer, the deadliest cancer worldwide, is of particular concern in Latin America. The rising incidence poses a myriad of challenges for the region, which struggles with limited resources to meet the health care needs of its low- and middle-income populations. In this environment, we are concerned that governments are relatively unaware of the pressing need to implement effective strategies for screening, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer. The region has also been slow in adopting molecularly-based therapies in the treatment of advanced disease: testing for epidermal growth factor r

Vaccination of Elk (Cervus canadensis) with Brucella abortus Strain RB51 Overexpressing Superoxide Dismutase and Glycosyltransferase Genes Does Not Induce Adequate Protection against Experimental Brucella abortus Challenge.

In recent years, elk (Cervus canadensis) have been implicated as the source of Brucella abortus infection for numerous cattle herds in the Greater Yellowstone Area. In the face of environmental and ecological changes on the landscape, the range of infected elk is expanding. Consequently, the development of effective disease management strategies for wild elk herds is of utmost importance, not only for the prevention of reintroduction of brucellosis to cattle, but also for the overall health of the Greater Yellowstone Area elk populations. In two studies, we evaluated the efficacy of B. abortus

Recognising and managing atrial fibrillation in the community.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia and has greater prevalence in the increasing ageing population, with an estimated 10% of those over 80 years having AF. Symptoms associated with AF include palpitations, dizziness, shortness of breath and fatigue. Those presenting with these symptoms need to be investigated and the appropriate treatment should be initiated if AF is detected. For those with AF, there is a significant risk of stroke if patients are not adequately anti-coagulated. This article outlines methods for detecting AF in the community and provides an overview

Canine vector-borne diseases in India: a review of the literature and identification of existing knowledge gaps.

Despite the combination of favourable climate for parasites and vectors, and large populations of stray dogs, information concerning the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of canine vector-borne diseases in India is limited. However, with the country's expanding economy and adaptation to western culture, higher expectations and demands are being placed on veterinary surgeons for improved knowledge of diseases and control. This review aims to provide an overview of the current state of knowledge of these diseases in India and identify existing knowledge gaps in the literature which need to

Experiences of early parenthood in and beyond the coronavirus pandemic: a qualitative study with expectant and new mothers.

The term ‘Perinatal’ incorporates pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. The perinatal period is of significance in both the individual and familial life cycle, an experience shared by the wider social network and community. Yet, it can be a time where the impact of pre-existing and emerging mental health problems could necessitate specialist Perinatal Mental Health Services (PMHS) support via the National Health Service (NHS). The COVID-19 pandemic is considered to have added adverse impacts on Perinatal Mental Health (PMH), with questions on the lived experience remaining largely unanswe

The little things are big: evaluation of a compassionate community approach for promoting the health of vulnerable persons.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerable persons are individuals whose life situations create or exacerbate vulnerabilities, such as low income, housing insecurity and social isolation. Vulnerable people often receive a patchwork of health and social care services that does not appropriately address their needs. The cost of health and social care services escalate when these individuals live without appropriate supports. Compassionate Communities apply a population health theory of practice wherein citizens are mobilized along with health and social care supports to holistically address the needs of persons exp
