[Toxic retinopathies].

Among the drugs, which are topically administered, only epinephrine may produce retinal changes (macular oedema) in aphakic patients. Among the drugs, which are systemically administered, some immunodepressors, ethambutol, indomethacine, digitalis, but particularly chlorpromazine, thioridazine, quinine and chloroquine may produce toxic retinopathies. Concerning the intraocular metallic foreign bodies, siderosis is much more toxic for the retina than chalcosis.

Development of Dickie's small eye, a mutation in the house mouse.

A new semidominant mutation in the laboratory mouse, Dickie's small eye (Dey), is described. It is localized on chromosome 2. Heterozygotes show reduced body size, small eyes with coloboma, small or lacking lens with cataract, abnormal folding of the retina and reduction of the pigment layer. The anterior chamber is usually missing. Homozygotes apparently die early in pregnancy.

Different effects of valproic acid on photoreceptor loss in Rd1 and Rd10 retinal degeneration mice.

PURPOSE: The histone-deacetylase inhibitor activity of valproic acid (VPA) was discovered after VPA's adoption as an anticonvulsant. This generated speculation for VPA's potential to increase the expression of neuroprotective genes. Clinical trials for retinitis pigmentosa (RP) are currently active, testing VPA's potential to reduce photoreceptor loss; however, we lack information regarding the effects of VPA on available mammalian models of retinal degeneration, nor do we know if retinal gene expression is perturbed by VPA in a predictable way. Thus, we examined the effects of systemic VPA on

A Biomimetic Self-Adaptive Neurovision Eye With an Integrated Gel Iris and Retinamorphic Architecture.

Biological vision systems integrate light perception with self-adaptive regulation to ensure a stable view. Mimicking this in an artificial neuromorphic system requires synergistic components for dynamic light control and in-sensing processing. Here we present a biomimetic self-adaptive neurovision system featuring an integrated gel iris and retinamorphic architecture. The hydrogel iris, structured as a double concentric ring, autonomously modulates its opacity from 2.95 to 89.85% via a photothermally driven themochromic effect, while the ionogel retina, designed as a hemispherical micropillar

The mysterious middlemen making your vision pop: understanding the function of amacrine cells.

In many brain regions, inhibitory interneurons represent a highly diverse class of cells, and the specific roles of most subtypes remain unclear. This diversity is particularly striking in the retina, where amacrine cells, the primary inhibitory interneurons, form the most diverse population, with nearly 67 subtypes in mice. Recent methodological advances have provided unprecedented insight into this complexity. Techniques such as transcriptomics, connectomics and targeted electrophysiological recordings have made it possible to isolate and characterize individual amacrine cell types. Here, we

The Endocannabinoid System in Retinal Müller Glia: Lessons From Astrocyte Research.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a widespread neuromodulatory system involved in both physiological and pathological processes. The ECS has been mainly characterized in neurons, but emerging evidence has revealed its presence in different glial cells. Many studies focused on the functions of the ECS in astrocytes, but its role in other glial cells remains poorly explored. Müller cells are the main glial cells in the retina, providing structural maintenance, metabolic support and neuroprotection to other retinal cells. However, the crosstalk between the ECS and Müller glia (MG) has been scan

A neurobiology perspective on the assembly of retinal vasculature from 2D to 3D.

The reciprocal regulation of the neural ensemble and vascular network within the mammalian central nervous system (CNS) is crucial for its development and functionality. Neuron-derived pro-angiogenic factors, such as growth factors, morphogens, and guidance cues, play a key role in forming stereotypical vascular architectures in the cortex, spinal cord, and cerebellum during development. Notably, the CNS vasculature forms distinct 3D lattice structures composed of laminar vascular networks interconnected by penetrating vessels. This contrasts with the more random 3D arborizations found in tumo

Intraoperative Visualization of Subretinal Injection and Retinal Detachment in Rats.

Subretinal injection, the delivery of a solution between the photoreceptors and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), creates a subretinal space where components are in direct contact with photoreceptors and RPE cells. This delivery method allows for targeted treatment of these cells. Therapeutics for subretinal injection have been developed and approved, particularly for inherited retinal diseases. In animals, subretinal injection procedures can be challenging due to the lens size, especially in rodents. This article describes methods for subretinal injection in rats, enabling intraoperative

Müller cells trophism and pathology as the next therapeutic targets for retinal diseases.

Müller cells are a crucial retinal cell type involved in multiple regulatory processes and functions that are essential for retinal health and functionality. Acting as structural and functional support for retinal neurons and photoreceptors, Müller cells produce growth factors, regulate ion and fluid homeostasis, and facilitate neuronal signaling. They play a pivotal role in retinal morphogenesis and cell differentiation, significantly contributing to macular development. Due to their radial morphology and unique cytoskeletal organization, Müller cells act as optical fibers, efficiently channe

Bilateral Iris and Chorioretinal Colobomas in a Child With Suspected Lamb-Shaffer Syndrome.

Lamb-Shaffer syndrome (LSS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by haploin-sufficiency of the SRY-related HMB box (SOX5) gene. Most cases result from de novo variants; however, some cases follow autosomal dominant inheritance patterns. Classic features of LSS include global developmental delay, dysmorphic facial features, musculoskeletal abnormalities, and cardiac and genitourinary defects. Ophthalmic manifestations of LSS such as strabismus and optic nerve abnormalities have been described in approximately 55% of patients with LSS. We report a case of a 22-month-old boy with a histor

Fluorescein Angiography.

Fluorescein angiography (FA) or Intravenous Fluorescein Angiography (IVFA) is an imaging modality used to study the circulation of the retina and choroid. It is based on a physical principle where molecules are excited by light within a certain wavelength range, and the emitted wavelength is longer than the excitation light. When this emitted energy occurs in the visible spectrum is called luminescence. The type of excited molecule determines the imaging technique used. In FA, an exogenous molecule is excited, while in autofluorescence, endogenous molecules are excited and detected.

More than meets the eye: Retinal phosphenes as confounds in transcranial alternating current stimulation.

Effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on the central nervous system are well-established. However, tACS can elicit retinal phosphenes due to current spread to the eyes complicating brain-centred working mechanisms of neuromodulation. Electric field simulations on realistic head models confirm current leakage to the eyes and potentially the optic nerve. In addition, results from vision science point toward retina-induced effects on the brain outside perceptual awareness. Retinal phosphenes and changes in retinal sensitivity as corollaries of tACS need to be considered t

Repeated exposure to low doses of light induces retinal damage in vivo in a wavelength-dependent manner.

The exposure of the general population to artificial light at night has dramatically increased in recent decades. Current standards for domestic lighting are based on acute exposure to light and consider blue wavelengths to be responsible for phototoxicity. However, meta-analyses pointed out the role of lifelong light exposure in the onset of age-related macular degeneration, suggesting a cumulative effect of light exposure. Here, we investigate the retinal phototoxicity of a repeated exposure to light emitting diodes of different spectral compositions in 6-week-old albino rats. Rats were expo

Synaptic Origins of the Complex Receptive Field Structure in Primate Smooth Monostratified Retinal Ganglion Cells.

Considerable progress has been made in studying the receptive fields of the most common primate retinal ganglion cell (RGC) types, such as parasol RGCs. Much less is known about the rarer primate RGC types and the circuitry that gives rise to noncanonical receptive field structures. The goal of this study was to analyze synaptic inputs to smooth monostratified RGCs to determine the origins of their complex spatial receptive fields, which contain isolated regions of high sensitivity called "hotspots." Interestingly, smooth monostratified RGCs co-stratify with the well-studied parasol RGCs and a

The Impact of Aging on the Function of Retinal Ganglion Cells.

Aging is a major risk factor for retinal neurodegenerative diseases. Aged mammalian retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) lack the ability to regenerate axons after injury. Rodent models suggest that older age increases the vulnerability of RGCs to injury and impairs RGC function as well as their functional recovery. Molecular changes - including decreased circulating levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) - might contribute to impaired RGC dendritic extension during aging. Moreover, age-related mitochondrial dysfunction plays a major role in aging processes, as it leads to reduced adenosi

Tunable anti-ambipolar vertical bilayer organic electrochemical transistor enable neuromorphic retinal pathway.

Increasing demand for bio-interfaced human-machine interfaces propels the development of organic neuromorphic electronics with small form factors leveraging both ionic and electronic processes. Ion-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) showing anti-ambipolarity (OFF-ON-OFF states) reduce the complexity and size of bio-realistic Hodgkin-Huxley(HH) spiking circuits and logic circuits. However, limited stable anti-ambipolar organic materials prevent the design of integrated, tunable, and multifunctional neuromorphic and logic-based systems. In this work, a general approach for tuning

[Research progress of ocular organoids].

The development of ocular organoids, which closely mimic the tissue structure and functionality of the human eye, has emerged as a prominent area of research in the field of ophthalmology. These organoids serve as valuable models for investigating the mechanisms and interventions of eye-related diseases. However, the establishment of in vitro models that accurately represent the tissue structure and functionality of the human eye has long been a challenge in ophthalmic research. Numerous efforts have been made to enhance the fidelity of ocular organoid models, aiming to improve their suitabili
