PURPOSE: Few articles focus on the effect of CPAP on the nocturnal blood pressure in OSA patients. This study aims to evaluate the effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy on nocturnal blood pressure in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), which fills the research gap. Additionally, differences in nocturnal blood pressure measurements before and after CPAP therapy were analyzed across varying disease severities.
METHODS: A total of 80 individuals with newly diagnosed OSAHS who sought care at the Sleep Respiratory Disease Diagnosis and Treatm…

RATIONALE: Premature ventricular contraction (PVC) is a common type of arrhythmia, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common trigger for this condition. Some patients still have PVC, even if ventilation is improved by wearing a respirator. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has a long history of arrhythmia treatment, and this is the first report of a patient with PVC caused by OSA treated with TCM. Twenty-four-hour Holter showed that the number of PVCs decreased from 8968 to 0 before and after TCM treatment, and discomfort symptoms disappeared completely.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 37-year-old m…

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) frequently coexists with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), yet it remains underdiagnosed in OSA populations due to overlapping symptoms and limited access to psychiatric sleep evaluations. Earlier studies have explored photoplethysmography (PPG) for screening either OSA or MDD individually but have not investigated the use of PPG to analyze comorbid MDD in patients with OSA. Additionally, beat-level entropy and complexity features, which quantify subtle nonlinear variations in pulse morphology and may reflect autonomic nervous system dysregulation associated with t…

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is closely associated with obesity. Traditional anthropometric indices body mass index (BMI) could not assess body fat content precisely. The body roundness index (BRI) has emerged as a novel adiposity metric reflecting central fat distribution. This study aimed to compare BRI and BMI in assessing the risk and worsening of OSA severity in community-based cohort study.
METHODS: We analyzed data from two well-characterized cohorts: the Osteoporotic Fractures in Men Study (MrOS) and the Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS). Statistical and machine learning ap…

Sleep apnea (SA) is a chronic sleep-related disorder consisting of repetitive pauses or restrictions in airflow during sleep and is known to be a risk factor for cerebro- and cardiovascular disease. It is generally diagnosed using polysomnography (PSG) recorded overnight in an in-lab setting at the hospital. This includes the measurement of blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), which exhibits fluctuations caused by SA events. In this paper, we investigate the accuracy and utility of reflectance pulse oximetry from a wearable device as a means to continuously monitor SpO2 during sleep. To this end, w…

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been linked to various pathologies, including arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation. Specific treatment options for OSA are mainly limited to symptomatic approaches. We previously showed that increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) stimulates late sodium current through the voltage-dependent Na+ channels via Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIδ (CaMKIIδ), thereby increasing the propensity for arrhythmias. However, the impact on atrial intracellular Na+ homeostasis has never been demonstrated. Moreover, the patients often exh…

Rationale: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity is typically assessed by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), a frequency-based metric that allocates equal weight to all respiratory events. However, more severe events may have a greater physiologic impact. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the degree of event-related hypoxemia would be associated with the postevent physiologic response. Methods: Patients with OSA (AHI, ⩾5/h) from the multicenter Canadian Sleep and Circadian Network cohort were studied. Using mixed-effect linear regression, we examined associations bet…

OBJECTIVE: The frequency of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is high. The clinical course of non-IPF interstitial lung disease (ILD) can be similar to that of IPF. We sought to assess the frequency and predictors of OSA in patients with non-IPF fibrotic ILD, as well as the impact of positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy on the quality of life of such patients.
METHODS: This was a prospective study in which non-IPF fibrotic ILD patients underwent a home sleep apnea test. The patients with and without OSA were compared, and a multivariate logis…
