The clinical prognosis of implants that are placed against super-erupted opposing dentition.

OBJECTIVES: If teeth are missing, super-eruption of teeth in the opposing arch can occur in the area and can change the occlusal plane. When missing teeth are replaced with implants, the oral surgeon must determine whether or not the super-erupted teeth need to be treated in order to normalize the occlusal plane. In this study, we evaluated the clinical prognosis of dentition after implant placement and prosthetic treatment were completed in an occlusal plane altered by super-erupted teeth in the opposing arch without additional treatment of the super-erupted teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twe

[A hearing aid anchored in the cranial bone for amplification of bone conduction].

The purpose of this study was to compare hearing and understanding with a bone conduction hearing aid of a new type and with conventional models. The new instrument, BAHA (bone anchored hearing aid) is connected with the skull percutaneously rather than transcutaneously as with the conventional instruments. In the ENT department of Nijmegen University Hospital the understanding of speech with both types of hearing aid was evaluated thoroughly. The patients had a middle-ear loss with in addition an inner-ear loss of 60 dBHL at most. A conventional air conduction hearing aid (behind or inside th

Transverse patella fracture fixation: A cadaveric biomechanical comparison of cannulated screws and anterior tension band versus low-profile, multiplanar mesh plating.

INTRODUCTION: Multiplanar mesh plating of patella fractures has become more popular in recent years. It was the goal of this study to compare the biomechanical stability of cannulated screw with anterior tension band to multiplanar mesh plating for fixation of transverse patella fractures in cadaver specimens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight matched pairs of fresh frozen cadaveric knees were obtained and soft tissues dissected leaving the extensor mechanism, joint capsule, and retinaculum intact. Transverse fractures were created at the mid-portion of the patella. For each pair, one specimen was

Serious injuries of Lisfranc joint: A retrospective multicenter study of 141 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Lisfranc joint injuries are common and often underdiagnosed. They occur during trauma of various mechanisms, high or low energy. Their management is difficult because of the wide spectrum of lesions and the management of associated lesions, particularly in the emergency stage. Their surgical treatment remains controversial. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the management of Lisfranc injuries and to study their clinical, functional and radiologic evolution. We also wanted to assess the consequences of these lesions on the patient's quality of life

[Minimally Invasive Osteosynthesis of Calcaneal Fractures Using the Anterolateral Locking Plate].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Extended lateral approach to calcaneus fractures is associated with a high risk of infection. Such risk can be reduced by using mini-invasive approaches. The sinus tarsi approach provides a good overview of the posterior joint facet of the calcaneus and can also be done as a mini-invasive procedure. The authors present their fi rst experience with osteosynthesis of joint depression calcaneal fractures using the anterolateral locking plate inserted through the sinus tarsi approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS During the period from 1 February 2020 to 31 January 2022, 18 patients w

Fractured coracoid process with acromioclavicular joint dislocation: A case report.

RATIONALE: Coracoid processes (CPs) fracture with acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation are extremely rare. This combined injury has brought many challenges to surgeons, and the mechanism underlying the injury is still not fully understood. There is no clear consensus on its treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we describe a CP fracture with AC joint dislocation in a middle-aged manual worker. DIAGNOSIS: Radiographs showed a fracture of the base of the CP and a third-degree AC joint separation. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated surgically with open reduction and internal fixation of t

Undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injuries, conservative or surgical treatment with percutaneous position screws?

PURPOSE: Undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injuries are easy to miss or underestimate, and many cases are treated without surgical fixation. It has not yet widely known whether conservative treatment for undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injuries may lead to a poor outcome. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcomes of conservative versus surgical management (percutaneous position screw) of undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injury. METHODS: We analysed 61 cases in this retrospective study, including 38 males and 23 females. Forty-one patients were managed conservat

The morphology of proximal pole scaphoid fractures: implications for optimal screw placement.

The purpose of this study was to measure the radiographic parameters of proximal pole scaphoid fractures, and calculate the ideal starting points and trajectories for antegrade screw insertion. Computed tomography scans of 19 consecutive patients with proximal pole fractures were studied using open source digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM) imaging measurement software. For scaphoid sagittal measurements, fracture inclination was measured with respect to the scaphoid axis. The ideal starting point for a screw in the proximal pole fragment was then identified on the scaphoid

Guided growth for tibia vara (Blount's disease).

Blount's disease is commonly attributed to an intrinsic, idiopathic defect in the posteromedial proximal tibial physis resulting in progressive bowing of the leg, intoeing, and lateral knee thrust. Treatment has historically included bracing, physeal stapling, or corrective osteotomy, and was determined primarily by age at presentation. As we feel the pathology is not necessarily age dependent, we have elected to use the technique of guided growth using a lateral tension band plate to correct limb alignment as a first-line treatment in all patients presenting to our clinic as long as they had

Surgery for slipped capital femoral epiphysis in adolescents.

The treatment of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) in adolescents remains controversial. The goal of initial treatment is to prevent further slippage of the epiphysis. In mild forms, both stable and unstable, in situ fixation is widely accepted as the reference treatment. In contrast, several techniques are available for stable moderate-to-severe SCFE. In unstable moderate-to-severe SCFE, emergent reduction with decompression and internal fixation is currently the preferred method. Selection of the surgical technique rests on an appraisal of advantages versus drawbacks. The goal of this
