A retrospective analysis of 40 cases with histiocytosis X was undertaken to find out the course of primarily localized disease, and the prognosis of children with initially disseminated disease. Bone lesions recurred in nine of 23 children with localized histiocytosis X. In eleven cases other organ manifestations occurred as well; in four cases without bone relapse. After an observation period of 1-14 3/12 years, nine of 22 children in remission suffer from long-term sequelae like diabetes insipidus, convulsion, extrahypothalamic CNS-disease, orthopedic disability, growth retardation, dystroph

The 2025 Myanmar earthquake caused extensive destruction. Beyond 3,800 direct disaster-related deaths (direct DRDs) and 5,100 injuries, indirect disaster-related deaths (indirect DRDs) remain a persistent concern. Indirect DRDs are deaths caused by secondary health effects after a disaster, rather than by the direct physical impact of the hazard itself. They may arise through disrupted healthcare delivery, deteriorating living and evacuation environments, interruptions to chronic-disease management, and psychosocial stress. Evidence from Japan, including the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake an

BACKGROUND: Conus schistosomiasis is an extremely rare entity in which patients present with a wide range of neurological symptoms such as low back pain, paresthesia, fever, myalgia, paraparesis, and paraplegia. This neglected tropical parasitic disease causes significant neurological morbidity. The migration of parasitic worms and their eggs into the central nervous system can lead to profound and life-altering disabilities. Early, accurate diagnosis, and treatment can lead to the complete resolution of symptoms.

Long term health effects of heavy metal exposure from both occupational and environmental settings involve multi-organ toxicities including but not limited to disturbances of neurological, cognitive, and metabolic processes, immune system dysregulation, carcinogenesis and sometimes permanent disabilities. Humans are exposed to toxic metals through various sources and routes of entry. The risk of heavy metal poisoning from donor blood has been the subject of many scientific investigations. In this review we highlight how the access to a safe and adequate blood transfusion with minimal risk of t

Newborn screening is the largest genetic screening program in the United States with approximately four million newborns screened yearly. It has been available and in continuous development for more than 50 years. Each state manages, funds, and maintains its own individual program, which encompasses newborn screening as well as the diagnosis and coordination of care for affected infants and children. The ideal disorder for screening is one in which newborn intervention prevents later disabilities or death for infants who may appear normal at birth. There are 31 core conditions that are current

The screening of individuals with mild dysmorphic features and mental retardation using whole genome scanning technologies has resulted in the delineation of several previously unrecognized microdeletion syndromes. Microdeletion of 3q29 has been recently described as one such new syndrome. The clinical phenotype is variable despite an almost identical submicroscopic deletion size in most cases. We report on two individuals that further expand the clinical presentation of this rare disorder and compare the findings with earlier reports to refine the 3q29 microdeletion syndrome phenotype. Africa is the final continent to be affected by the nutrition transition and, as elsewhere, is characterized by the paradoxical coexistence of malnutrition and obesity. Several features of the obesity epidemic in Africa mirror those in other emerging nations: it penetrates the richer nations and urban areas first with a strong urban- rural gradient; initially it affects the wealthy, but later there is a demographic switch as obesity becomes a condition more associated with poverty, and it shares many of the same drivers related to the increasing affordability of highly refined oils and carbohy

The hypotheses of a visual basis to reading disabilities in some children have centered around deficits in the visual processes displaying more transient responses to stimuli although hyperactivity in the visual processes displaying sustained responses to stimuli has also been proposed as a mechanism. In addition, there is clear evidence that colored lenses and/or colored overlays and/or colored backgrounds can influence performance in reading and/or may assist in providing comfortable vision for reading and, as a consequence, the ability to maintain reading for longer. As a consequence, it is

Acute encephalopathy is the most serious complication of pediatric viral infections, such as influenza and exanthem subitum. It occurs worldwide, but is most prevalent in East Asia, and every year several hundreds of Japanese children are affected by influenza-associated encephalopathy. Mortality has recently declined, but is still high. Many survivors are left with motor and intellectual disabilities, and some with epilepsy. This article reviews various syndromes of acute encephalopathy by classifying them into three major categories. The first group caused by metabolic derangement consists o

Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) is a well-known congenital malformation syndrome caused by deletion of the short arm of chromosome 4 (4p-). In spite of more than 100 reported cases, information on its natural history remained very limited until recently. It was generally thought that these children had severe developmental disabilities and tended to be mere survivors devoid of personality. However, it is now evident that individuals with WHS are capable of more acquisition of developmental milestones than previously suggested. It is therefore very important to have guidelines for health supervi

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans. Female fleas burrow into the skin, typically of the feet, producing inflammation, pain, and itching. Although poverty is a major risk factor, not all households or children in the lowest economic bracket are affected, and boys appear disproportionately infected. This study investigated environmental and behavioral characteristics of households and children to explain these variations.
METHODS: A total of 3,871 pupils (equal numbers of boys and girls) aged 8-14 years from 44 primary schools in K

BACKGROUND: Specific learning disability (SLD) is a cognitive neurobiological disorder caused by atypical brain functioning. SLD is recognized when the individual's achievement in school is below that expected for age, schooling, and level of intelligence. Screening millions of students with SLD by health personnel is a logistical impossibility. Awareness and knowledge about learning disorders among schoolteachers may play a major role in the early identification and management of children with these disorders. Therefore, the assessment of teachers' knowledge and perceptions about learning dis

In a cohort of children and adolescents with moderate and severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), we explored the location and burden of traumatic axonal injury (TAI) on early magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and its associations with long-term outcomes at 1 and 5 years post-injury. Fifty-six patients (0-18 years) with moderate (n = 29) or severe (n = 27) TBI, where MRI was performed within 6 weeks, were prospectively included. TAI lesion locations (including grading), numbers, and volumes were registered on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and diffusion-weighted imaging, and locations

BACKGROUND: Executive functioning (EF) is an important concept in cognitive psychology that has rarely been studied in people with intellectual disabilities (IDs). The aim of this study was to examine the validity of two test batteries and the structure of EF in this client group.
METHODS: We administered the children's version of the Behavioural Assessment of the Dysexecutive Syndrome (BADS-C) and the Cambridge Executive Functioning Assessment (CEFA) for people with ID, to 40 participants who attended day centres for people with mild to moderate learning disabilities [mean full-scale intelli

Fetal alcohol-spectrum disorders (FASDs) are a collection of physical and neurobehavioral disabilities caused by prenatal exposure to alcohol. To prevent or mitigate the costly effects of FASD, we must identify mothers at risk for having a child with FASD, so that we may reach them with interventions. Identifying mothers at risk is beneficial at all time points, whether prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy, or following the birth of the child. In this review, three approaches to identifying mothers at risk are explored: using characteristics of the mother and her pregnancy, using laboratory bi

Children with reading impairments have long been associated with impaired perception for rapidly presented acoustic stimuli and recently have shown deficits for slower features. It is not known whether impairments for low-frequency acoustic features negatively impact processing of speech in reading-impaired individuals. Here we provide neurophysiological evidence that poor readers have impaired representation of the speech envelope, the acoustical cue that provides syllable pattern information in speech. We measured cortical-evoked potentials in response to sentence stimuli and found that good

UNLABELLED: Irlen has defined a condition called Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS) that is associated with reading problems. According to Irlen, SSS can be treated by the use of colored filters, but there is disagreement about the existence of SSS and the efficacy of colored filter therapy.
METHODS: Thirty-nine children participated in the study: 24 were academically normal, nine had specific reading problems, and six had problems in multiple academic areas. SSS levels and preferred overlay colors were determined. Optometric test data were also available for each subject.
RESULTS: No signi

BACKGROUND: Eye injury is a leading cause of blindness and vision loss worldwide, with children and adolescents being particularly vulnerable. This study aimed to evaluate the global, regional, and national burden of eye injuries among children and adolescents from 1990 to 2021.
METHODS: This is a population-based analysis using data from Global Burden of Disease Study 2021. Eye injury estimates for children and adolescents aged under 20 years, including incidence and years lived with disability (YLDs), were collected and then analyzed by age, sex, and location. The association between sociod

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Autism is highly heterogeneous and reliance on behavioural assessments alone may not provide sufficient insight into the unique characteristics of autistic individuals. Biomarkers, like hair cortisol concentration (HCC), may help unravel mechanisms underlying clinical variation in autism and support diagnostic measures, especially in young children who may not be able to effectively communicate their distress. We examined the relationship between HCC and autistic traits along with commonly co-occurring conditions including sleep disturbances in autistic children compa
