Diabetes is associated with many emergent ophthalmologic conditions. The management of patients with diabetes requires careful monitoring for visual symptoms and frequent physical examination for signs of retinopathy. Analysis of the lacrimal fluid of normal subjects and patients after cataract extraction and with penetrating wounds of the eyeball showed fluctuations of the R protein concentration, which depended on the type of the injury and its complications. PURPOSE: To describe the percutaneous treatment of an orbital hydatid cyst as an alternative approach to conventional surgery.
METHODS: In a 21-year-old man with diplopia and right proptosis, radiologic studies disclosed a 25 x 25 x 20-mm purely cystic mass in the right retrobulbar area. Based on the presumptive diagnosis of hydatid cyst, the cyst was treated percutaneously under ultrasonographic guidance with aspiration, 15% hypertonic saline injection, and reaspiration without any complication.

Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis has increased in the past half-century because of the advent of antibiotics and indwelling catheters. The disease process can produce highly suggestive, though nonpathognomonic, ocular signs that assist the clinician in reaching a diagnosis. Isotretinoin (13-cis-retinoic acid) is commonly used for the treatment of acne vulgaris. We included 55 patients in this prospective study, and inspected them before, while and after therapy with isotretinoin regarding ocular side effects. Careful slit-lamp inspection, measurement of break-up-time and Schirmer-test and microbiological investigations of the conjunctival flora were performed. AIMS: In a quantitative prospective study the corneal sensation in patients with leprosy was compared with age matched controls.
METHODS: The patients with leprosy were classified as paucibacillary and multibacillary and were divided in three groups: (1) patients without clinically detectable eye pathology; (2) patients with lagophthalmos, (3) patients with signs of iridocyclitis. To determine the magnitude of eye lesions in newly diagnosed leprosy patients we examined their eyes. The Eastern Leprosy Control Project was supported by The Netherlands Leprosy Relief Association; we used the regional clinic in Biratnagar and 5 mobile clinics in surrounding districts as our survey area. The ratios of D-arabinitol (a major metabolite of Candida species) to creatinine were examined in 46 sera of 40 patients with ocular inflammatory disease and in 50 age-matched normal controls (25 men and 25 women). A group of 87 onchocerciasis patients from a hyperendemic area without vector control was treated with a single dose of 150 micrograms/kg ivermectin. A second, third and fourth dose was administered 5, 12 and 17 months later to 44, 35 and 25 patients. Skin snip loads reduced substantially following each consecutive dose. BACKGROUND: While molluscum contagiosum of the eyelid skin is commonly complicated by conjunctivitis, primary involvement of the conjunctiva or cornea by molluscum lesions is exceedingly rare. The authors studied a 34-year-old man with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in whom multiple molluscum lesions of the lids and a single nodule of the limbus developed.

A case of retinitis following disseminated cryptococcus neoformans infection in a renal allograft recipient is reported. Therapy with oral fluconazole showed a remarkable improvement at the end of 8 weeks. This is the first report of the use of fluconazole in the treatment of cryptococcal retinitis.

We report a case of Listeria monocytogenes endophthalmitis that presented as a recalcitrant keratouveitis in a nonimmunocompromized patient. L. monocytogenes was recovered from the patient's aqueous, vitreous, and two of three blood cultures.
