Factors affecting blood mercury concentrations in practicing dentists.

It has been suggested that mercury vapor may be transformed into highly toxic organomercury compounds by micro-organisms in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. If this hypothesis is correct, practicing dentists might be expected to have concentrations of organic mercury in their blood higher than that found in non-dentists. Blood mercury concentrations of practicing dentists and non-dentists were determined by means of cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Potential sources of mercury exposure were identified in both dentists and non-dentists through a questionnaire completed

Eutrophication, marine biotoxins, human health.

Eutrophication phenomena in marine coastal waters can today be explained on the basis of natural or anthropogenic causes. Undesirable effects and also sanitary problems in both types of eutrophication are often produced, but they may differ greatly in frequency and significance. Some algal biotoxins can affect both marine animals and man, whilst others affect man alone. From data currently available it appears that the sanitary state of man can be affected through the digestive, respiratory and cutaneous apparatus. Four main dinoflagellate biointoxications are now recognized: paralytic shellfi

Hepatotoxicity to dogs of horse meat contaminated with indospicine.

An outbreak of liver disease which killed more than 30 dogs at Alice Springs was associated with feeding meat from horses, some of which had developed Indigofera linnaei poisoning (Birdsville horse disease). Affected livers were small, nodular and yellow. There was associated jaundice, ascites, elevation of alanine aminotransferase levels in serum, a tendency to bleed, and signs of hepatic encephalopathy. Histologically, livers showed periacinar necrosis, collapse and haemorrhage, with severe swelling, vacuolation and cholestasis in remaining hepatocytes. Indospicine, a toxic amino acid found

[Residue determinations in milk following application of the fasciolicides rafoxanide and hexachloro-p-xylene].

The control of Fasciola hepatica in dairy cattle may lead to considerable residue problems in dairying. In the GDR, a hexachloro-p-xylene-based fasciolicide has been approved till recently, and another, rafoxanide-based fasciolicide has been on trial. The investigations have shown that the two active principles are excreted in the milk for a prolonged period, rafoxamide being found more suitable. Their marked lipophil behaviour leads to accumulation in the fat phase and, thus, in high-fat milk products.

Antimicrobial activity of electro-activated solutions produced from lactate and propionate anions against Bacillus cereus ATCC 14579 and its spores and their application in cooked rice.

Bacillus cereus is a spore-forming, toxin-producing bacterium responsible for the spoilage and contamination of a wide variety of foods, posing a risk to consumer health. Its spores are more resistant than vegetative cells and can survive in food production environments even after decontamination, representing a high food safety challenge. Thermal treatments of contaminated foods cause bacterial cell lysis and toxin release, while altering their organoleptic and nutritional properties. This is why non-thermal methods are increasingly favored to meet the demands of consumers seeking fresher and

[Animals as a source of infections for humans--diseases caused by EHEC].

EHEC (enterohaemorrhagic E. coli) bacteria are new, only since 1982 recognized zoonotic pathogens. EHEC differ from E. coli intestinal commensales by the fact that they are lysogenic infected with bacteriophages, which carry the genetic information for the production of shigatoxins (Stx type 1 and/or 2). Due to the obligatory released Stx EHEC are classified also among the Shigatoxin producing E. coli (STEC). EHEC are capable of causing a Hemorrhagic Colitis and some sequelae of diseases such as the haemolytic uraemic syndrome. Due to their virulence factors they can be divided into typical an

Health risks assessment and source admeasurement of potentially dangerous heavy metals (Cu, Fe, and Ni) in rapidly growing urban settlement.

Environmental contamination is a global challenge that impacts every aspect of ecosystem. The contaminants from anthropogenic or industrial trash continually recirculate into the environment, agricultural land, plants, livestock, and ultimately into humans by way of the food chain. After an increase in human and farmland animal deaths from illnesses due to contaminated drinking water, toxic metal water poisoning has remained a global concern. Diverse environmental and enforcement organisations have attempted to regulate the activities that serve as precursors to these heavy metals which have b

HOF-triggered amorphization of Zr-porphyrin MOF as a high-performance extraction sorbent for ultrasensitive monitoring of bisphenols in instant noodle matrices.

Bisphenols (BPs) are persistent endocrine-disrupting food contaminants whose trace-level monitoring in complex matrices such as instant noodles is hampered by low concentrations and matrix interference. We report a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF)-triggered amorphization strategy to convert the zirconium-porphyrin MOF PCN-224 into a series of amorphous TATB-HOF/PCN-224x (ATPx) composites for dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) of BPs. The optimized ATP5.0 had a hierarchical meso‑macroporous structure (150.17 m²/g) with abundant active sites. Coupled with HPLC-UV, the dSPE method ga

Bioavailability of lead in contaminated soils elevated with high carbohydrate, protein, and fat diets via influences on gut microbiota and intestinal barrier function.

Accidental ingestion of lead (Pb) contaminated soil will interact with different types of foods in the gastrointestinal tract. To determine the effects of food composition on soil Pb oral bioavailability, a mouse bioassay was conducted to evaluate the relative bioavailability (RBA) of Pb with high-fat, high-protein, high-carbohydrate, and high-dietary fiber diets. Results indicated that high-fat diet most effectively enhanced Pb-RBA (91.4% for soil A and 89.7% for soil B, respectively), while high-dietary fiber reduced it. Compared with the basal diet group, high-carbohydrate, high-fat, and hi

Extract from Rosa spp. as a Factor Influencing the Growth Rate of Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus Strains.

Coagulase-negative bacteria of the Staphylococcus genus are currently frequent food contaminants. The increase in antibiotic resistance means that these microorganisms are becoming the cause of many serious infections and toxications. Their resistance to routinely used chemical compounds has led to the search for alternative methods to combat food-borne pathogens. For this purpose, plant extracts rich in phenolic compounds are increasingly used. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of extracts obtained from the pseudo-fruits and flesh of Rosa canina, Rosa rugosa and Rosa pomifera 'Ka

An Outbreak of Foodborne Botulism Caused by Clostridium botulinum BoNT/A3 in Pickled Eggs - Weihai City, Shandong Province, China, July 2024.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Foodborne botulism is caused by botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT). Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum) is a strictly anaerobic, Gram-positive bacterium, which is a key pathogen capable of producing BoNT. BoNTs can be classified into seven serotypes (A to G) based on their antigenic properties. Among these, BoNT/A is one of the most common serotypes. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This was a case of foodborne botulism in Weihai caused by homemade pickled eggs contaminated with C. botulinum. Five individuals presented with symptoms, while three were asymptoma

A novel gdmH-related gene, ghl, involved in environmental stress tolerance and vancomycin susceptibility in milk-derived Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the main microorganisms that contaminate dairy products and pickled foods, and has a great impact on economy and human health. GdmH-related proteins, as important functional units widely present in Staphylococcus species, have not been reported in S. aureus so far. In this study, we identified a gdmH-related gene, named ghl. We found that mutation of ghl gene could decrease the tolerance of environmental stresses (heat, desiccation, salt and hydrogen peroxide) of S. aureus and enhanced the capacities of biofilm formation. In addition, the ghl mutant was more sen
