Can ChatGPT match physicians in the diagnosis, triage, management and prevention of infectious diseases? A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: The global burden of infectious diseases (ID), combined with a shortage of ID specialists, continues to challenge healthcare systems worldwide. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly large language models such as ChatGPT, has emerged as a potential adjunct for diagnosis, triage, clinical decision-making, and patient communication. However, evidence describing its role in ID care and comparison with physician-led practice remains fragmented. To map and synthesize the current literature on the use of ChatGPT in infectious disease diagnosis, triage, and management, summarizing r

Exploration of Factors That Influence Clinical Nurses' Active Engagement in Research and Evidence-Based Practice: Protocol for a Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses rely on current and relevant evidence to provide safe, high-quality care to patients and families. To do this, nurses need support to participate in research and evidence-based practice (EBP) activities. Despite the well-documented benefits of nurses' engagement in research and EBP, few actually do so in the clinical setting. This creates a knowledge-to-practice gap in which nursing evidence is not generated and existing evidence is often not applied in practice, jeopardizing the quality of care and patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this scoping review is to identify

Establishment of Evidence-Based Nursing Indices for Dysphagia After Anterior Cervical Spine Surgery.

AIM: To select and obtain relevant evidence for the management of dysphagia after anterior cervical spine surgery both domestically and internationally, clinical quality evaluation indicators were developed based on evidence-based nursing practices, and obstacles and promoting factors in evidence-based nursing practices were analysed. This research was aimed to provide a basis for evidence-based nursing practices to promote standardized management of dysphagia after anterior cervical surgery. BACKGROUND: Dysphagia is the most common complication following anterior cervical surgery, but there

Long-Term Psychological Distress Among Surrogate Decision Makers for Mexican American and Non-Hispanic White Patients With Severe Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: During acute hospitalizations, physicians often focus on the stroke patient and not family who may be traumatized by this sudden change to their loved one. We investigated long-term psychological distress among family surrogate decision makers for Mexican American (MA) and non-Hispanic White (NHW) severe stroke patients. Previous work in other diseases suggested worse psychological outcomes in MA than NHW caregivers. METHODS: This was a population-based, prospective cohort study in Nueces County, TX. Stroke patient participants and their surrogate decision makers we

The nature and content of rumination for head and neck cancer survivors.

INTRODUCTION: Head and neck cancer (HNC) diagnosis and treatment can be a significant life trauma. Some HNC survivors experience post-traumatic growth (PTG), which has been linked with better health-related quality-of-life. Empirical research on PTG, and theoretical models, point to the importance of being able to purposely make sense of the traumatic experience. Intrusive rumination, by contrast, is linked to poorer outcomes. This study explored HNC survivors' experiences of rumination. METHODS: Twenty HNC survivors between 9 months and 5 years post-diagnosis were recruited (11 male, 9 femal

A pilot randomised controlled trial of abrupt versus gradual smoking cessation in combination with vaporised nicotine products for people receiving alcohol and other drug treatment.

BACKGROUND: Vaporised nicotine products (VNPs) may be a potential quit smoking strategy. Most research has permitted participants to use VNPs ad libitum. This is the first study to examine combining the use of a VNP with a gradual or abrupt cessation guideline. This study aims to test the potential feasibility of a quit smoking strategy (abrupt verses gradual cessation) in combination with vaporised nicotine products among people in AOD treatment. METHODS: We conducted a pilot randomised controlled trial between April 2018 and July 2019. Participants were recruited from AOD programs located w

The Impact of COVID-19-Related Restrictions on Social and Daily Activities of Parents, People With Disabilities, and Older Adults: Protocol for a Longitudinal, Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to wide-scale changes in societal organization. This has dramatically altered people's daily activities, especially among families with young children, those living with disabilities such as spinal cord injury (SCI), those who have experienced a stroke, and older adults. OBJECTIVE: We aim to (1) investigate how COVID-19 restrictions influence daily activities, (2) track the psychosocial effects of these restrictions over time, and (3) identify strategies to mitigate the potential negative effects of these restrictions. METHODS: This is a longitudinal

Factors Affecting the Welfare of Unweaned Dairy Calves Destined for Early Slaughter and Abattoir Animal-Based Indicators Reflecting Their Welfare On-Farm.

In many dairy industries, but particularly those that are pasture-based and have seasonal calving, "surplus calves," which are mostly male, are killed at a young age because they are of low value and it is not economically viable to raise them. Such calves are either killed on farm soon after birth or sent for slaughter at an abattoir. In countries where calves are sent for slaughter the age ranges from 3-4 days (New Zealand and Australia; "bobby calves") to 3-4 weeks (e.g., Ireland); they are not weaned. All calves are at the greatest risk of death in the 1st month of life but when combined w

Comparing satisfaction, alliance and intervention components in electronically delivered and in-person brief interventions for substance use among childbearing-aged women.

Electronic delivery of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (e-SBIRT) may be a low-cost and high-reach method for screening and brief intervention in health care settings. However, its relative acceptability, ability to build a therapeutic alliance, and delivery of key intervention components compared to in-person SBIRT (SBIRT) is unclear. The association of these factors with intervention outcomes is also not known. We compared SBIRT and e-SBIRT on satisfaction, alliance, and receipt of intervention components, and evaluated the extent to which these intervention dimension

Association between atopy and herpetic eye disease: results from the pacific ocular inflammation study.

IMPORTANCE: Immune dysregulation in patients with atopy has been hypothesized to increase susceptibility to viral infections. Herpetic eye disease (due to herpes simplex and herpes zoster) is a significant cause of visual impairment, and data on an association between this sight-threatening disease and atopy are limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between atopy and herpetic eye disease, including herpes simplex virus (HSV) ocular disease and herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective, population-based case-control study from January 1, 2006,

Evaluation of a hospital-based youth violence intervention.

To decrease adolescent morbidity and mortality and improve the quality of life, a violence-prevention consultation is offered to hospitalized victims of nondomestic violence. The context is a violence-prevention team approach to patient assessment, treatment, and follow-up. Psychoeducational counseling emphasizes the individual through a cognitive behavioral approach and also recognizes the individual in the proximal social setting through referrals to community resources. The in-hospital component draws on the health beliefs model, self-efficacy, the theory of reasoned action and their synerg
