Executive orders or public fear: What caused transit ridership to drop in Chicago during COVID-19?

The COVID-19 pandemic has induced significant transit ridership losses worldwide. This paper conducts a quantitative analysis to reveal contributing factors to such losses, using data from the Chicago Transit Authority's bus and rail systems before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. It builds a sequential statistical modeling framework that integrates a Bayesian structural time-series model, a dynamics model, and a series of linear regression models, to fit the ridership loss with pandemic evolution and regulatory events, and to quantify how the impacts of those factors depend on socio-demograph

The Biopsychosocial Puzzle of Painful Sex.

Genital pain associated with sex is a prevalent and distressing problem with a complex research and clinical profile. This article reviews the historical context of the "sexual pain disorders" and the circuitous trajectory that has led from the first mention of painful sex in ancient documents to the latest diagnostic category of genito-pelvic pain penetration disorder in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as well as in other existing and proposed nomenclatures. Prominent etiologic research and emergent theoretical models are critically assessed, as

The prognostic value of platelet-lymphocyte ratio and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio in the treatment response and survival of patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma.

Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is a rare and highly heterogeneous non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Although a few prognostic models have been put forward to predict the prognosis of PTCL, some patients with poor prognosis remain unidentified. Therefore, we conducted a retrospective study of 213 adult PTCL patients and assessed the prognostic role of platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in the complete response (CR) and survival of PTCL patients. Patients with PLR ≥ 232.5 achieved a lower CR rate than patients with PLR < 232.5 (18.5% vs. 56.6%, p < .001). Moreover

Preclinical drug trials in the mdx mouse: assessment of reliable and sensitive outcome measures.

The availability of animal models for Duchenne muscular dystrophy has led to extensive preclinical research on potential therapeutics. Few studies have focused on reliability and sensitivity of endpoints for mdx mouse drug trials. Therefore, we sought to compare a wide variety of reported and novel endpoint measures in exercised mdx and normal control mice at 10, 20, and 40 weeks of age. Statistical analysis as well as power calculations for expected effect sizes in mdx preclinical drug trials across different ages showed that body weight, normalized grip strength, horizontal activity, rest ti

[Incidence and risk factors of mechanical complications in parenteral nutrition].

The objective of the present study is to determine the incidence of mechanical complications in patients with parenteral nutrition in our hospital, and to study which factors associated with catheterization in these patients are related to the appearance of different types of mechanical complications. All the central venous catheters registered during the time period between 1988-1994 were included. For the statistical treatment 5 logistic multiple regression models were designed in function of the different types of mechanical complications studied (dependent variable) and in relation to the

Predicting donor, recipient and graft survival in living donor kidney transplantation to inform pretransplant counselling: the donor and recipient linked iPREDICTLIVING tool - a retrospective study.

Although separate prediction models for donors and recipients were previously published, we identified a need to predict outcomes of donor/recipient simultaneously, as they are clearly not independent of each other. We used characteristics from transplantations performed at the Oslo University Hospital from 1854 live donors and from 837 recipients of a live donor kidney transplant to derive Cox models for predicting donor mortality up to 20 years, and recipient death, and graft loss up to 10 years. The models were developed using the multivariable fractional polynomials algorithm optimizing Ak

Goftte: A R package for assessing goodness-of-fit in proportional (sub) distributions hazards regression models.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we introduce a new R package goftte for goodness-of-fit assessment based on cumulative sums of model residuals useful for checking key assumptions in the Cox regression and Fine and Gray regression models. METHODS: Monte-Carlo methods are used to approximate the null distribution of cumulative sums of model residuals. To limit the computational burden, the main routines used to approximate the null distributions are implemented in a parallel C++ programming environment. Numerical studies are carried out to evaluate the empirical type I error rates of t

Breaking the cycle: how physical activity disrupts repetitive negative thinking in adolescents through positive affect and cognitive flexibility.

Repetitive negative thinking is a transdiagnostic cognitive process that is particularly prevalent during adolescence, a developmental period characterized by rapid changes in emotional regulation and executive control. Repetitive negative thinking is closely associated with a range of internalizing problems and represents an important risk factor for adolescent depression and anxiety. Given that academic pressure and self-focused attention increase markedly during the high school stage (ages 15–17), repetitive negative thinking is more likely to be activated and maintained during this period;

Side-level versus patient-level evaluation in four-view mammography classification: a comprehensive benchmark on the CMMD dataset.

BACKGROUND: Deep learning for mammographic image classification yields impressive performance metrics, but inconsistent evaluation methodologies-specifically whether results are reported at the independent side level or the bilateral patient level-make cross-study comparisons unreliable. The aim of this study was to quantify, on a single dataset and with a uniform training recipe, how much of the reported performance is determined by evaluation granularity rather than by model architecture. MATERIALS & METHODS: We benchmarked six backbone architectures (ResNet-18, ResNet-50, EfficientNet-B0,

Identifying Flare Prone Spondyloarthritis: Insights From a Prospective Cohort.

Background Flares are episodes of disease worsening requiring a change in treatment. Incidence of flares in spondyloarthritis (SpA) is around 60% in longitudinal patient-reported studies. The study was conducted to determine characteristics of flares in SpA and to identify differences between flare and non-flare populations. We hypothesized that the patient cohort who develop flares may behave differently in terms of validated disease activity and functional indices with regard to the non-flare population. Methods A cohort of 106 patients (2650 patient-weeks follow-up and 318 visits) who fulfi

COVID-19 social interventions were associated with amplified, not attenuated, indoor source pollutant-respiratory health associations: a six-year time-series analysis in Xi'an, China.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unprecedented social interventions that altered ambient air quality, population behavior, and healthcare-seeking. Whether these interventions modified the short-term association between air pollutants and respiratory health, and in which direction, remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a time-series study of daily respiratory outpatient visits (ICD-10: J00-J99, R04-R07, and R09) from a tertiary hospital in Xi'an, China, from January 2020 to December 2025. The study period was stratified into three COVID-19 phases: strict control (2020-2022), transi

Tension-band high-strength suture combined with absorbable screws with cortical penetration for treating Mayo type IIA olecranon fractures: finite element analysis, biomechanical testing, and clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: Tension-band wiring with Kirschner wires (TBW) is a common surgical technique for olecranon fractures (OFs), but has limitations like implant removal and soft tissue irritation. Tension-band high-strength suture with absorbable screw (TBSAS) technique can effectively solve these issues. This study aims to demonstrate the biomechanical stability and clinical efficacy of the TBSASC technique for treating OFs (Mayo IIA) (AO 21-B1.1). METHODS: Four finite element models for OFs (Mayo IIA) compared fixation constructs: TBW with cortical penetration (TBWC), TBW with intramedullary fixati

Effects of a commercial lemonade beverage, potassium citrate, and combination therapy on urinary stone risk parameters in hypocitraturic stone formers: a randomized crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Potassium citrate (KCit) is commonly prescribed to patients with recurrent nephrolithiasis; however, medication compliance is poor due to gastrointestinal side-effects. Crystal Light® (CL) sugar-free lemonade is a low-calorie beverage alternative that has been shown to increase urinary citrate and pH levels. In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of KCit, CL, and CL + KCit on 24-hour urine collections in hypocitraturic stone formers. METHODS: We performed a randomized crossover trial of 8 patients with isolated hypocitraturia on 24-hour urine collections. Patients complete

Association of intra-pancreatic fat deposition with bone marrow adiposity in young obese adults.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic fat accumulation is a key factor in impaired bone health in the obese population. Although hepatic fat fraction (HFF) has been established as an important marker of metabolic dysfunction, the effect of pancreatic fat fraction (PFF) on bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) in young obese adults remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the independent association between PFF and bone marrow adiposity and to compare it with that of HFF. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 155 young obese adults [mean age 35.01±6.25 years; mean body mass index (BMI) 31.9±

Flexible nonlinear modeling reveals age-related differences in resting-state functional brain connectivity in autistic males from childhood to mid-adulthood.

BACKGROUND: Divergent age-related functional brain connectivity in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been observed using resting-state fMRI, although the specific findings are inconsistent across studies. Common statistical regression approaches that fit identical models across functional brain networks may contribute to these inconsistencies. Relationships among functional networks have been reported to follow unique nonlinear developmental trajectories, suggesting the need for flexible modeling. Here we apply generalized additive models (GAMs) to flexibly adapt to distinct network trajector
