An Animal Model of Liuzijue Based on Kinematic Features Exploration: A Pilot Study Conducting in COPD.

BACKGROUND: Liuzijue is an essential nonpharmacological intervention within the comprehensive management strategies for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. However, the absence of an animal model for Liuzijue presents methodological limitations in its basic research. This study aimed to apply interventions with kinematic characteristics of Liuzijue to COPD mice, with the objective to explore an animal model of Liuzijue suitable for experimental studies. METHODS: Forty-eight C57BL/6 mice randomly assigned into six groups to receive interventions mimicking Liuzijue's kinemati

Fluid removal improves muscle performance and weakness in critically ill patients: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Fluid overload in critically ill patients has been associated with muscle edema, decreased tissue quality, and the development of intensive care unit-acquired weakness (ICU-AW). Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) with ultrafiltration (UF) contributes to removing excess extracellular fluid. This study aimed to evaluate whether UF is associated with changes in muscle ultrasound parameters and strength in critically ill patients. METHODS: Critically ill patients with resolved hypoperfusion undergoing CRRT with fluid removal via UF were prospectively enrolled and compared wit

Assessing thyroid peroxidase antibodies in Emirati medical students: a cross-sectional pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab) are detectable in almost all patients with autoimmune thyroid disease or Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) but may also be present in healthy individuals. HT affects women to a greater extent than men and can lead to overt hypothyroidism, which may increase the risk of miscarriage. There are no local data available on the prevalence of TPO-Ab among healthy women in the United Arab Emirates. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of TPO-Ab and assess thyroid function in healthy medical students. METHODS: This cross-secti

Exploring exhaled breath biomarkers for lactose intolerance diagnosis: the Lactobreath pilot study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Food intolerances are prevalent in Europe and can cause considerable physical discomfort, dietary restrictions and psychosocial challenges. Among the prominent causes of food intolerance are defects in the digestion and/or transport of short-chain fermentable carbohydrates, fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAPs). A common diagnostic tool for food intolerance is the hydrogen breath test, which monitors the production of H2 gas from the fermentation of ingested FODMAPs by colonic microbiota. However, this method is limited due to its relatively poor correlat

Pilot study of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers reveals inflammatory changes in patients with paranoid schizophrenia.

Paranoid schizophrenia is a severe mental illness with both positive and negative symptoms. Currently, the role of peripheral and central inflammation is increasingly suspected as possible factor in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. This retrospective, monocentric pilot study investigated 35 patients (15/35 female) diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia after exclusion of possible underlying neuroinflammatory disorders to assess for inflammatory changes of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and associated signs of neurodegeneration. Kappa free light chains (KFLC), a panel of 21 cyto- and chemokines

Immunofluorescent characterization of Klotho and FGF23 in clear cell renal cell carcinoma: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is the most prevalent histological subtype of renal malignancy, associated with poor prognosis in advanced stages. Emerging evidence highlights the potential tumor-suppressive role of the anti-aging protein Klotho (KL) and its cofactor, fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), both of which are implicated in phosphate metabolism and cellular homeostasis. METHODS: Using immunofluorescence and quantitative image analysis, we assessed KL and FGF23 protein levels in 20 ccRCC specimens stratified by tumor grade, alongside adjacent normal t

Conceptualization of an Ex Vivo Organ Culture (EVOC) Model for Human Seminoma: A Pilot Study.

Personalized treatment strategies for seminoma, a germ cell tumor, are crucial due to inherent tumor heterogeneity. Existing in vitro models often inadequately represent the native tumor microenvironment. Ex vivo organ culture (EVOC) offers a potential solution by preserving the tumor's original architecture and cellular interactions. This study presents the pilot study for adaptation of the EVOC platform specifically for non-metastatic seminoma, focusing on short-term tissue maintenance and an assessment of viability markers, examining intraoperative biopsies from 12 patients with non-metasta
