Modifiable Risk Factors in Hispanic Adults With Gastric Cancer in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Hispanics make up 19% of the U.S. population and are experiencing rising rates of cancer, primarily due to an increase in infection-related cancers (gastric, hepatic, cervical) and advanced cancers secondary to delayed screening (colorectal, cervical, breast). There is an increased incidence of gastric cancer (associated with infection, obesity, alcohol, and tobacco use) in Hispanics, especially at a young age, highlighting the need to consider ethnicity as a risk factor. METHODS: This study utilized the 2016-2019 National Inpatient Sample database to examine all patients admitted

Preventive Interventions to Reduce the Burden of Rheumatic Heart Disease in Populations at Risk: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a devastating yet preventable condition that disproportionately affects low-middle-income countries and indigenous populations in some high-income countries. Various preventive interventions have been implemented across the globe, but evidence for the effectiveness of these measures in reducing the incidence or prevalence of acute rheumatic fever and RHD is scattered. This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of preventive interventions and identify the strategies used to reduce the burden of RHD. METHODS AND RESULTS: A comprehensive

Use of coaching and technology to improve blood pressure control in Black women with hypertension: Pilot randomized controlled trial study.

Hypertension is the main cause of cardiovascular disease, especially in women. Black women (58%) are affected by higher rates of hypertension than other racial/ethnic groups contributing to increased cardio-metabolic disorders. To decrease blood pressure (BP) in this population, a pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted to examine the effects of Interactive Technology Enhanced Coaching (ITEC) versus Interactive Technology (IT) alone in achieving BP control, adherence to antihypertensive medication, and adherence to lifestyle modifications among Black women diagnosed with and receiving

Income Differences and COVID-19: Impact on Daily Life and Mental Health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disproportionate suffering among vulnerable and socioeconomically disadvantaged portions of the population. Low-income and minority populations are likely to experience disparate disease and mental health burdens. Currently, there is little evidence regarding how the experience of the early months of the US COVID-19 outbreak differed by income level, and how that related to mental health symptoms. The present study used data from a national sample of US adults (n = 5023) who completed measures related to the COVID experience, the COVID-19 Fear Scale, the Genera

The Relative Age Effect on Youth Sports Injuries.

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: The relative age effect (RAE) has been described as the consequence of differences in ages between individuals within the same age group. In youth sports, relatively older children may have a physical and developmental advantage over younger children. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between relative age and sports injury in a cohort of pediatric athletes. METHODS: A probability sample (n = 1997) of children between 5 and 17 yr of age with sports injuries were extracted from a regional hospital database. Relative age was defined as a child's bi

Modelling the HIV epidemic among MSM in the United Kingdom: quantifying the contributions to HIV transmission to better inform prevention initiatives.

OBJECTIVES: HIV is a major public health problem among MSM in the United Kingdom with around 2400 new infections annually. We quantified the contribution of biological and behavioural factors. DESIGN: Modelling study. METHODS: A partnership-based model of HIV transmission among UK MSM aged 15-64 years was developed and calibrated to time series HIV prevalence. The calibration was validated using multiple surveillance datasets. Population-attributable fractions were used to estimate the contribution of behavioural and biological factors to HIV transmission over the period 2001-2002, 2014-2015

Optimising lifestyle interventions: identification of health behaviour patterns by cluster analysis in a German 50+ survey.

BACKGROUND: Many prevention and intervention measures are still targeting isolated behaviours such as tobacco use or physical inactivity. Cluster analysis enables the aggregation of single health behaviours in order to identify distinctive behaviour patterns. The purpose of this study was to group a sample of the over-50 population into clusters that exhibit specific health behaviour patterns regarding regular tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity. METHODS: From the total population of the federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, 982 men and 1

Alexithymia and depression in patients with fibromyalgia: When the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

This study investigated the link between alexithymia and depressive symptoms in Fibromyalgia (FM). 181 FM women and 181 healthy controls (HC) were compared using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale. A moderation analysis was performed to examine the moderation effect of the group (FM vs. HC) on the relationship between alexithymia and depression. Group was a significant moderator, highlighting a stronger relationship between alexithymia and depressive symptoms in the FM compared to HC. The study highlighted that the association between alexithymia and de

Zebra migration strategies and anthrax in Etosha National Park, Namibia.

Partial seasonal migration is ubiquitous in many species. We documented this phenomenon in plains zebra (Equus burchelli) in Etosha National Park, Namibia (ENP), and provided a cost-benefit analysis as it relates to the spatial distribution of water, vegetation and endemic anthrax. This analysis draws upon two years of ENP zebra movement data that reveal two sub-populations: migrators and non-migrators. Migrators are shown to be behaviorally dominant in the way they utilize space and use water holes. We raise the possibility that the co-existence of these two groups reflects an evolutionary pr

[Principles in the assessment of radiation exposure in interventional measures].

Interventional procedures undoubtedly involve a high radiation exposure, for the patient. For some interventional procedures the frequencies of procedures, radiation exposures and considerations to the radiation risk are shown and discussed. Radiation risk is calculated with the currently common assumptions but always in consideration of the age and expectation of life of the patient. The risk coefficient used for the age-distribution of the common population is 5% per Sv, but for the risk coefficient for, e.g., the group of PTA patients 1.0% per Sv can be derived. That's why the risk of cance

Development of a Clinic-Based, Sociostructural Intervention to Improve the Provision of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for Cisgender Women: Formative Study Using the Assessment, Decision, Adaptation, Production, Topical Experts, Integration, Training, and Testing (ADAPT-ITT) Framework.

BACKGROUND: Cisgender women (subsequently referred to as women) account for 23% of new HIV diagnoses in the United States. There are significant sociostructural barriers to engagement and retention in the pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) cascade, particularly for Black women. OBJECTIVE: In response to the lack of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to improve PrEP initiation, adherence, and persistence among women in the United States, we developed a clinic-based, sociostructural intervention focused on engagement and retention in the PrEP cascade for women. METHODS: We used the Assessment, D

Estimating occupational radiation doses when individual dosimetry information is not available: a job exposure matrix.

BACKGROUND: A job exposure matrix (JEM) was developed for a population based case control study to assess the possible association between occupational radiation and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. METHODS: Using published radiation monitoring data, we developed a radiation JEM composed of estimated annual dose distributions, categorized by time period, for a broad range of occupational and industrial groups. RESULTS: When information is available to correctly assess an individual's exposure status, the annual dose distributions in the JEM can be used in conjunction with job histories to estimate th
