One positive impact of health care reform to physicians: the computer-based patient record.

The health care industry is an information-dependent business that will require a new generation of health information systems if successful health care reform is to occur. We critically need integrated clinical management information systems to support the physician and related clinicians at the direct care level, which in turn will have linkages with secondary users of health information such as health payors, regulators, and researchers. The economic dependence of health care industry on the CPR cannot be underestimated, says Jeffrey Ritter. He sees the U.S. health industry as about to ente

Thyroid Hormone Treatment for Hypercholesterolemia in Euthyroid Patients: Results From a European Survey of Thyroid Specialists.

OBJECTIVE: A relationship among hypothyroidism and lipid disorders is well established. However, current evidence and guidelines do not support the use of thyroid hormones (TH) in euthyroid patients with hyperlipidaemia as potential harms are considerable. This European survey investigated the use of TH in euthyroid patients with severe hypercholesterolemia as a complementary treatment. DESIGN: Data were derived from the THESIS (Treatment of Hypothyroidism in Europe by Specialists) project that surveyed TH use. Univariable and multivariable analyses were used to explore associations. RESULTS

Assessment of eating behavior in patients with migraine: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Altered eating behaviors may precede the onset of full-scale eating disorders. Given the link between eating disorders and migraine, it is critical to identify individuals with migraine with altered eating behaviors. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate eating behaviors in a sample of migraine patients and to examine their potential associations with migraine frequency and related disability. METHODS: Adult patients diagnosed with migraine (n = 531) were asked to report their monthly migraine days (MMDs), complete the Headache Impact Test-6 (HIT-6), and answer the Adult Eati

BACKGROUND: Patients with breast cancer have an estimated 14% to 60% risk of developing lymphedema after treatment. Self-management behavior strategies regarding lymphedema are essential in preventing and alleviating the severity of lymphedema. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate qualitative research evidence on the potential influencing factors for self-management behaviors of lymphedema in patients with breast cancer. METHODS: A systematic search of 10 electronic databases was conducted to identify qualitative studies on patient experience of lymphedema self-management. The fo

Evaluation of E-Cigarette Use in Opioid-Dependent Patients in Maintenance Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: As tobacco smoking decreases, the use of e-cigarettes is on the rise. There is a debate whether switching from smoking to the use of e-cigarettes might represent a harm reduction strategy for those who smoke tobacco heavily, a habit often observed in individuals with opioid dependence. The present study investigated the prevalence and patterns of tobacco smoking and e-cigarette use in patients in opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) and whether e-cigarette use contributed to the cessation of smoking tobacco. METHODS: In 2014 (n=84) and in 2021 (n=128), patients from two OMT clinic

Mpox gastrointestinal manifestations: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Mpox is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the Poxviridae family and Orthopoxvirus genus. Other well-known viruses of the Orthopoxvirus genus include the variola virus (smallpox), cowpox virus and vaccinia virus. Although there is a plethora of research regarding the dermatological and influenza-like symptoms of mpox, particularly following the 2022 mpox outbreak, more research is needed on the gastrointestinal (GI) effects. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review is to outline the GI manifestations of the monkeypox virus. METHODS: The authors conducted thi

Clinico-epidemiological characteristics of the biliary samples and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern at a teaching hospital in Northern India.

INTRODUCTION: Bile is deemed a sterile fluid, with the presence of clinical conditions like cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, previous biliary interventions, biliary strictures, and so on, leading to bile stasis, and increases the chances of bacteriobilia. In this study, we recognize the bacterial spectrum of microorganisms isolated from bile samples, diagnostic parameters, and antibiotic sensitivity patterns. METHODS: A retrospective observational study was carried out by compiling data from the hospital information system of a tertiary care center from 2021 to 2022 to evaluate biliary infectio

Socioeconomic status and use of analgesic drugs before and after primary hip arthroplasty: a population-based cohort study of 103,209 patients during 1996-2018.

Background and purpose - Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an effective and common procedure. However, persistent pain and analgesic requirement up to 2 years after THA surgery are common. We examined the trends in the utilization of analgesics before and after THA, overall, and in relation to socioeconomic status (SES) in a populationbased cohort. Patients and methods - We used the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register to identify 103,209 patients who underwent THA between 1996 and 2018. Data on prescriptions and SES markers was obtained from Danish medical databases. Prevalence rates of redeemed pr

The safety and efficacy of a cosmetic camouflaging agent for post-procedural bruising.

INTRODUCTION: A challenge of minimally invasive esthetic procedures (eg, injectables and threads) is managing adverse events (AEs), such as post-procedural bruising. Implementation of post-procedural camouflage therapy may minimize the appearance of bruising and mitigate AEs. AIMS: A physician and patient user experience program was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a concealer for the cosmetic camouflage of post-procedural bruising. METHODS: Thirty female patients with a mean age of 42.03 years participated in the program. Physicians and patients completed various questionnair
