Influence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on the contralateral optic nerve in patients with unilateral nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The aim was to quantitatively evaluate the influence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) on the morphology and function of the contralateral optic nerve in patients with unilateral nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). METHODS: Fifty patients with unilateral NAION were divided into non-OSAS (n = 16), mild OSAS (n = 15), and moderate-severe OSAS (n = 19) groups based on their apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores. Systemic and ocular characteristics were compared between these groups. Spearman correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used

Regression of epiretinal membrane after optic nerve atrophy.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of epiretinal membrane (ERM) regression after optic nerve atrophy. METHODS: Retrospective case report. RESULTS: A 56-year-old man with progressive visual impairment was found to have an ERM with associated retinal thickening and distortion (documented with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography [OCT]). In addition, we noted a slight unilateral paleness of the optic nerve. The patient denied any further diagnostic investigation and presented himself again 2 years after the initial presentation. A new OCT examination at this point revealed a remarkable regress

Longitudinal follow-up of vision in a neuromyelitis optica cohort.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory disease associated with optic neuritis and myelitis. Recently, several studies showed that optical coherence tomography (OCT) could be an interesting method for the evaluation of disease severity; however, to date there are no studies with a longitudinal follow-up of visual function in NMO. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of OCT to evaluate the progression of visual dysfunction in NMO. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A group of 30 NMO patients (thus, 60 eyes), comprised of 20 women and 10 men with a mean age of 43.7 +/- 12.3 year

Role of noninvasive ocular imaging as a biomarker in peripheral artery disease (PAD): A systematic review.

This study aimed to review the current literature exploring the utility of noninvasive ocular imaging for the diagnosis of peripheral artery disease (PAD). Our search was conducted in early April 2022 and included the databases Medline, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane, and others. Five articles were included in the final review. Of the five studies that used ocular imaging in PAD, two studies used retinal color fundus photography, one used optical coherence tomography (OCT), and two used optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) to assess the ocular changes in PAD. PAD was associated with both

Glaucoma in an eye with situs inversus of the optic disc.

Situs inversus of the optic disc is a congenital abnormality characterized by dysversion of the optic nerve head and surrounding retinal vessels. Here, we report the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) characteristics of eyes with situs inversus of the optic discs with and without glaucoma, as imaged using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). OCT findings of an eye with situs inversus of optic disc and uveitic glaucoma revealed abnormal RNFL thinning. After six months of treatment, progressive RNFL thinning in the superior-nasal and inferior-nasal areas was found. The fellow eye wi

Long-duration volumetric optoretinography enables measurement of retinal recovery dynamics after photostimulation.

Optoretinography (ORG) typically measures rapid photoreceptor responses, limiting investigation of slower retinal recovery processes. Here, we demonstrate long-duration volumetric ORG using customized high-resolution spectral-domain optical coherence tomography with repeated volumetric acquisition. Spatial averaging across the retinal volume improves sensitivity to both light-evoked scattering and outer segment (OS) optical path length (OPL) changes, while automated deep learning-based segmentation enables efficient analysis of large four-dimensional (4D) datasets. In vivo experiments in mice

Impact of melanin on choroidal measurements.

The thickness of the choroid is measured on the optical coherence tomography (OCT) as the distance between the hyperreflective retinal pigment epithelium and the hyperreflective chorio-scleral junction, contributed by the choroidal vessels and choroidal melanocytes. Our hypothesis is that the amount of absorption and reflectance of the infrared wavelength OCT light by the melanin present in the choroidal melanocytes contribute to the visibility of the choroidal structures and choroidal thickness on OCT. We explain this hypothesis via two representative cases with choroidal pigmentary abnormali

True Exfoliation: Rarity of Degeneration.

True exfoliation is the condition in which the anterior capsule layers are delaminated. This case report presents a woman in her 70s with cataract and age-related degenerative true exfoliation. Findings from anterior segment optical coherence tomography (ASOCT) demonstrated a lamellar separation of the anterior portion of the lens capsule typical of true exfoliation. Early recognition of the condition via preoperative and intraoperative ASOCT is vital for better surgical planning and delivery so as to avoid complications in capsulorhexis execution.

Doppler OCT verifies pulsation-induced anisotropic vessel lumen dynamics in the human retina.

This study verifies anisotropic vessel pulsatility in human retinas. Doppler optical coherence tomography (OCT) was utilized for dynamic monitoring of peripapillary vessel lumen dynamics. Quantitative analysis consistently revealed larger axial compared to lateral lumen changes, with an axial-to-lateral pulsation change ratio of 1.26 ± 0.08. These findings highlight the anisotropic biomechanical properties of retinal tissues, which contribute to direction-dependent vascular dynamics. Quantitative assessment of anisotropic vascular biomechanics offers promising insights for improving the detect

Vigabatrin Retinal Toxicity First Detected with Electroretinographic Changes: A Case Report.

Vigabatrin is an effective antiepileptic drug (AED) typically used in the treatment of refractory partial seizures and infantile spasms. Its use, however, is limited due to the concern of retinal toxicity and subsequent visual field defects. Herewith in we describe a case of vigabatrin toxicity that illustrates electroretinographic (ERG) changes occur before imaging and visual field deterioration. Decrease in maximal ERG b: a ratio was observed before thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) on optical coherence tomography (OCT).

DINOCT: robust skin surface localization for robotic noncontact dynamic optical coherence elastography.

Noncontact dynamic optical coherence elastography (OCE) can measure the elastic properties of anterior soft tissues. However, applying OCE to skin requires tracking mechanical waves propagating in multiple directions to reconstruct mechanical anisotropy. Robotic scanning is well suited to this task but requires accurate probe positioning, alignment to the surface normal, and precise, repeatable rotation. To ensure phase and polarization stability, polarization-maintaining (PM) fibers can be used, although they introduce stripe and ghost artifacts that can destabilize surface detection. We pres

The Role of the Inner Nuclear Layer for Perception of Persisting Tiling Inside a Monocular Scotoma.

We report two patients, one with and one without long-term persistent tiling inside an arcuate macular scotoma. In both cases, the scotoma was caused by a cilioretinal artery occlusion. Both patients were almost identical regarding the location and extent of the scotoma. In both cases, there was a comparable degree of atrophy on optical coherence tomography for the retinal nerve fibre, ganglion cell, and inner plexiform layers. The main difference was the preservation of the inner nuclear layer in the patient with persistent tiling. In this patient, optical coherence angiography demonstrates p
