The effects of unmodified stroma-free hemoglobin (SFHb) and diaspirin cross-linked hemoglobin (DCLHb) on the regional blood circulation and systemic hemodynamics were studied in rats using a radioactive microsphere technique. SFHb and DCLHb increased mean arterial blood pressure without affecting heart rate. SFHb produced a 24.9% decrease in the cardiac output while DCLHb produced an 44.8% increase in the cardiac output. Results consequent upon investigations into variations of the water metabolism, central and intracardiac hemodynamics and myocardial contractility in 42 patients with congenital heart defects are reported. Chronic postnatal hyperoxia attenuates the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR) of rats. To determine whether the ability to detect deficits in the HVR depends on the degree of hypoxia, we assessed the HVR at several levels of hypoxia in adult rats reared in 60% O(2) for the first two postnatal weeks. This study was designed to assess the effects of tachycardia origin, the significance of atrial contribution, and the effects of left ventricular ejection fraction on hemodynamically tolerated ventricular tachycardia (VT) and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). Forty-one subjects with inducible hemodynamically tolerated VT (n = 24) or SVT (n = 17) with mean ages of 60 +/- 13 and 40 +/- 16 years and mean ejection fractions of 32 +/- 15% and 59 +/- 5%, respectively, were studied. To elucidate the role of vasomotor sympathetic nerve activity response to lower-body positive pressure (LBPP), muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) along with blood pressure, electrocardiogram, transthoracic impedance and echocardiogram were recorded in ten healthy young men at 10, 20 and 30 mmHg LBPP in the supine position. We found that MSNA was suppressed (27%) at both 10 and 20 mmHg LBPP but tended to increase at 30 mmHg LBPP.
