Atrazine and pregnancy outcomes: a systematic review of epidemiologic evidence.

Atrazine (ATR) is a commonly used agricultural herbicide that has been the subject of epidemiologic studies assessing its relation to reproductive health problems. This review evaluates both the consistency and the quality of epidemiologic evidence testing the hypothesis that ATR exposure, at usually encountered levels, is a risk factor for birth defects, small for gestational age birth weight, prematurity, miscarriages, and problems of fetal growth and development. We followed the current methodological guidelines for systematic reviews by using two independent researchers to identify, retrie

The health risk of chrysotile asbestos.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The word asbestos is a poorly attributed term, as it refers to two very different minerals with very different characteristics. One is the serpentine mineral of which the white asbestos, chrysotile, is the most common. The other is the amphibole asbestos, which includes the blue asbestos crocidolite and the brown asbestos amosite. Although today chrysotile is the only type used commercially, the legacy of past use of amphibole asbestos remains. This review clarifies the differences between the two mineral families referred to as asbestos and summarizes the scientific basis f

Malaria situation in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

The epidemiology of malaria in the Greater Mekong Subregion is complex and rapidly evolving. Malaria control and elimination efforts face a daunting array of challenges including multidrug-resistant parasites. This review presents secondary data collected by the national malaria control programs in the six countries between 1998 and 2010 and examines trends over the last decade. This data has a number of limitations: it is derived exclusively from public sector health facilities; falciparum-specific and then pan-specific rapid diagnostic tests were introduced during the period under review; an

Innate immune signaling and Porphyromonas gingivalis-accelerated atherosclerosis.

Periodontal diseases are a group of diseases that lead to erosion of the hard and soft tissues of the periodontium, which, in severe cases, can result in tooth loss. Anecdotal clinical observations have suggested that poor oral health may be associated with poor systemic health; however, only recently have appropriate epidemiological studies been initiated, with defined clinical endpoints of periodontal disease, to address the association of periodontal disease with increased risk for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Although conflicting reports exist, these epidemiological studies

Role of phages in the epidemiology of cholera.

Understanding the genetic and ecological factors which support the periodic emergence of toxigenic Vibrio cholerae causing outbreaks of cholera in regions where the disease is endemic, is vital to develop preventive measures. Besides environmental factors which are not precisely defined, bacteriophages, and horizontally transmissible genetic elements are known to have a significant role in the epidemiology and evolution of the pathogen. Cholera epidemics are also known to be self-limiting, and hence identifying natural factors which contribute to the collapse of epidemics may have important im

Preventive effects of an enriched environment on rodent psychiatric disorder models.

Interplay between genetic and environmental factors plays a key role in psychiatric disorders, as well as other brain diseases, cancer, and metabolic syndrome. In accordance with epidemiological findings, animal studies have pointed out the importance of a variety of environmental factors, such as viral infection during pregnancy or infancy, early parental loss or separation, and physical or sexual abuse in early life, in the etiology of psychiatric disorders. Conversely, positive effects of environmental factors against the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders are also demonstrated, in which

The factor structure of the CES-D in the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey: the influences of ethnicity, gender and language.

In this paper, we examine the factor structure of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) in the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (Hispanic HANES). The Hispanic HANES provides a unique opportunity to examine the patterning of depressive symptoms among the three major Hispanic groups in the U.S. and to compare the factor structures that emerge from the analysis to other studies using this approach. Different factor structures emerged for the Hispanic groups as compared to previous analyses of the CES-D with non-Hispanic populations. We also found significan

Epidemiology of gestational trophoblastic disease.

The epidemiology of gestational trophoblastic disease is not well understood. Methodologic problems with published reports limit the interpretation of incidence data, although the frequency of hydatidiform mole appears to be about one per 1000 pregnancies. No consistent temporal trends in rates of either hydatidiform mole or choriocarcinoma are evident. Hydatidiform mole appears to be caused by abnormal gametogenesis and fertilization. Age, ethnicity, and a history of hydatidiform mole appear to be important risk factors for hydatidiform mole. Age, ethnicity, a history of hydatidiform mole or

New Insights and Challenges Associated With IgA Vasculitis and IgA Vasculitis With Nephritis-Is It Time to Change the Paradigm of the Most Common Systemic Vasculitis in Childhood?

What are the challenges ahead and how have we responded so far when it comes to the non-granulomatous systemic vasculitis, characterized mainly by deposits of IgA immune complexes in the endothelium of small blood vessels-IgA vasculitis (IgAV)? That is the question to which we tried to answer. We summarized existing knowledge about epidemiology, pathogenesis, genetics, diagnostic tests and therapy in this somewhat neglected entity in pediatric rheumatology. Since etiopathogenesis of IgA vasculitis is complex, with factors other than galactose-deficient IgA1-containing immune complexes also bei

The feasibility of using the EQ-5D-3L with adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities within a randomized control trial: a qualitative evaluation.

COVID-19 has triggered a global health crisis. Death from severe respiratory failure and symptoms, including fever, dry cough, sore throat, anosmia, and gastrointestinal disturbances, has been attributed to the disease. Development of screening and diagnosis methods prove to be challenging due to shared clinical features between COVID-19 and other pathologies, such as Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and common colds. This study aims to develop a comprehensive one-stop online public health screening system based on clinical and epidemiological criteria. T

Basal cell carcinoma: pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, histopathology, and management.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy. Exposure to sunlight is the most important risk factor. Most, if not all, cases of BCC demonstrate overactive Hedgehog signaling. A variety of treatment modalities exist and are selected based on recurrence risk, importance of tissue preservation, patient preference, and extent of disease. The pathogenesis, epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis, histopathology, and management of BCC will be discussed in this review.

The evolution of human pathogens: examples and clinical implications.

Recent advances in sequencing of complete bacterial genomes, molecular typing of micro-organisms, and research on microbial pathogenicity factors changed our view on the evolution of human bacterial pathogens. We review current evolutionary concepts on plague and meningococcal disease to illustrate the interplay of molecular phylogeny, epidemiology, and pathogenicity research. Furthermore, examples of the tremendous velocity of bacterial evolution under changing environmental conditions will be discussed.

The electronic fight against the schistosomes.

A DOS-compatible model for use on personal computers has been constructed for teaching in parasite epidemiology. The program is based on the Macdonald model of schistosome dynamics and enables simulation of the effect of a control campaign on a human worm load by reducing four transmission factors in the parasite life-cycle: (1) egg contamination, (2) snail lifetime, (3) exposure to cercariae and (4) adult worm lifetime.
