Structural and functional insights into metal coordination and substrate recognition of Akkermansia muciniphila sialidase Amuc_1547.

Sialidases in Akkermansia muciniphila are pivotal for mucin degradation, enabling energy acquisition, modulating gut microbiota balance, and influencing host health. However, their structural and functional mechanisms remain poorly characterized. This study resolved the magnesium-bound crystal structure of Amuc_1547, revealing a six-bladed β-propeller fold linked to a carbohydrate-binding module (CBM)-like β-sandwich domain. Structural characterization identified a conserved S-x-D-x-G-x-x-W motif, a unique metal-binding pocket coordinated by residues Glu289, Glu299, and Asp300, and a putative

Metal-Organic Framework-Integrated Nanoplatform Orchestrates Osteochondral-Synovial Homeostasis for Osteoarthritis Therapy.

Osteoarthritis (OA) remains a formidable clinical challenge due to the intricate interplay of cartilage degradation, synovitis, and subchondral bone remodeling. Clinical intra-articular therapies are hindered by rapid drug clearance, inadequate cartilage penetration, and a lack of strategies targeting multifactorial pathogenesis. Herein, we engineered a hybrid nanoplatform for multiaction therapeutics by integrating boundary lubrication and "osteochondral-synovial synergistic effect." The kartogenin (KGN)-loaded Mg/Zn-based metal-organic framework (Mg-ZIF) core, encapsulated within a cartilage

Acid neutralization and metal-phenolic nanomedicine on-demand release microspheres for reversing cartilage degeneration.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disorder characterized by complex network dysregulation across the entire joint, which significantly compromises the efficacy of single-target therapeutic interventions. Pathological acidosis and magnesium ion (Mg2+) deficiency have been mechanistically associated with cartilage matrix degradation, abnormal subchondral bone remodeling, and chronic inflammation, collectively driving OA progression. In this study, we engineered porous PLGA microspheres (Cur-Mg/PLGA MPs) incorporating curcumin-modified magnesium hydroxide nanosheets to effectively neutr

Acceleration of slice encoding for metal artifact correction at 0.55 T using hexagonal sampling.

PURPOSE: To evaluate a hexagonal sampling approach for accelerated slice encoding for metal artifact correction (SEMAC) at 0.55 T. Contemporary mid-field systems (0.1 T-1.0 T) show tremendous potential for imaging near metal implants. However, the limited parallel-imaging options necessitate alternative methods for scan time reduction. METHODS: We apply retrospective hexagonal undersampling to current state-of-the-art SEMAC with 2-fold generalized autocalibrating partially parallel acquisitions-based parallel imaging at 0.55 T. The hexagonal sampling approach results in an additional 50% scan

A Case of a Metal Foreign Object Remaining in the Maxillary Bone for an Extended Period: A Case Report.

We report a rare case in which a metallic foreign body remained undetected in a patient's maxilla for nearly 40 years after a childhood bicycle accident. Despite the accident, the implant remained in place without causing infection due to the lack of imaging studies at the time. The metal was accidentally discovered during a routine dental imaging examination 40 years later and subsequently surgically removed. This case highlights the importance of comprehensive imaging and the dangers of overlooking foreign bodies, especially in the vulnerable head and neck region. The patient, 53 years old a

Safety and Efficacy of Double-J Metallic Mesh Ureteral Stents in Malignant Ureteral Obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: The mortality rate of malignant ureteral obstruction (MUO) is high, and ureteral stents are widely used for its treatment. Polymeric ureteral stents are commonly utilized, but stent occlusion due to tumor obstruction poses a problem. Conversely, metallic ureteral stents, while pressure resistant, can cause significant pain during insertion and replacement, often necessitating anesthesia. Since 2017, double-J metallic mesh ureteral stents have been on the market, but reports on their efficacy and safety are still limited. We collected data on using this stent at our hospital and c

Efficacy of the Stent-in-Stent Technique as a Rescue Method for Removing Embedded Metallic Biliary Stents.

OBJECTIVES: Self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) may become embedded because of tissue hyperplasia or tumor ingrowth, making their removal challenging. The stent-in-stent (SIS) method, which involves placing another SEMS inside to compress the tissue and aid removal, is a known rescue approach for stent removal. However, its efficacy across anatomical routes, optimal timing of removal, and predictors of difficult stent removal remain unclear. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 17 patients treated between April 2018 and May 2025. Embedded stents were placed via the transpapillary route, endos

Pediatric Implant of a Gold-Coated Defibrillator due to Persistent Metal Hypersensitivity: Case Report.

A 9-year-old boy presented with repeated exteriorization of four implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), despite changes in implantation site and the use of antimicrobial or polymeric envelopes. The initial device was placed following an episode of ventricular fibrillation, with imaging revealing non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Over subsequent procedures, he developed hypertrophic incisional scarring and granulomatous inflammation. Titanium hypersensitivity was confirmed via dermal testing, though all wound and blood cultures remained negative. After partial exteriorizatio

Novel impact of metal ion-induced cell death on diabetic cardiomyopathy pathogenesis and therapy.

Diabetes mellitus is a common chronic metabolic disease, with its prevalence escalating annually. Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a leading cause of mortality among diabetic patients, characterized by intricate metabolic disturbances and myocardial cell demise. Various forms of cellular death pathways including apoptosis, pyroptosis, autophagic cell death, necroptosis, ferroptosis, and entosis have been identified in diabetic cardiomyopathy. Inhibiting myocardial cell death pathways has shown promise in mitigating diabetic cardiomyopathy progression. However, there are still gaps in understanding t

Preclinical research models for evaluating the biocompatibility of bioresorbable metallic cardiovascular stents: A comparative review.

Cardiovascular stents are widely used to treat atherosclerosis by relieving vascular obstruction and providing structural support after coronary angioplasty. Bioresorbable metallic stents represent a promising alternative to conventional corrosion-resistant stents, which are linked to late-stage complications such as in-stent restenosis and thrombosis. Due to the diversity of stent materials and designs, rigorous evaluation of their interactions with the vascular environment in relevant preclinical models is essential before clinical translation. However, current studies employ highly variable

A lanthanide metal organic frameworks ratiometric fluorescence sensor for visual detection of anthrax biomarker.

A novel dual-emission fluorescence probe, Eu-TDA-DHTP, was developed based on a ratiometric fluorescence-organic frameworks utilizing Eu3+, 2,5-Thiophenedicarboxylic acid, and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid for the ratiometric and fluorescent visual sensing of the anthrax biomarker 2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA). The experiments demonstrated that this material can effectively enhance dual emission for DPA detection, enabling clear visualization. The limit of detection for DPA detection using Eu-TDA-DHTP is 1.9 μmol/L in fluorometric mode and 5 μmol/L in colorimetric mode. Additionally, t

Field-free Spin-Orbit Torque Perpendicular Magnetization Switching Induced by Metallic Multilayers.

The realization of the all-electrical manipulation of perpendicular magnetization switching is essential for next-generation information storage technologies and spintronic devices. Current-induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) has attracted tremendous research interest. However, this approach usually relies on external magnetic field to achieve deterministic switching, which greatly limits SOT devices moving toward practical applications. Here, we report the measurement of SOT from the [Pt/Au] multilayer with composition gradient along the thickness direction. The multilayer exhibits a much larger

Optimization of Mechanical Properties during Cold Rolling and Wrap-Forming for Metal Helical Tubes.

The proposed method involves the utilization of a strip roll-forming technique to fulfill the specific requirements for constructing large-scale structures in orbit and space station trusses during extraterrestrial exploration. This involves progressively rolling out a metal strip with an L+V-shaped locking edge through multiple passes of forming rolls featuring different section shapes. The process of helical locking enables the formation of a slender, spiral-shaped tube, which can be utilized for the in-orbit assembly of exceptionally large structures. The proposed approach introduces a two-

All-in-One Magneto-optical Memory Arrays Based on a Two-Dimensional Ferromagnetic Metal.

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials with atomic-scale thickness and smooth interfaces promise the possibility of developing high-density, energy-efficient spintronic devices. However, it remains a challenge to effectively control the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of 2D vdW ferromagnetic materials, as well as the integration of multiple memory cells. Here, we report highly efficient magneto-optical memory arrays by utilizing the huge spin-orbit torques (SOT) induced by the in-plane current in Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) flake. The device is constructed from individual FGT f

Physicochemical Rationale of Matrix Effects Involved in the Response of Hydrogel-Embedded Luminescent Metal Biosensors.

There is currently a critical need for understanding how the response and activity of whole-cell bacterial reporters positioned in a complex biological or environmental matrix are impacted by the physicochemical properties of their micro-environment. Accordingly, a comprehensive analysis of the bioluminescence response of Cd(II)-inducible PzntA-luxCDABE Escherichia coli biosensors embedded in silica-based hydrogels is reported to decipher how metal bioavailability, cell photoactivity and ensuing light bioproduction are impacted by the hydrogel environment and the associated matrix effects. Engineering Surface-Adaptive Metal-Organic Framework Armor to Promote Infected Wound Healing.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold enormous promise for treating bacterial infections to circumvent the threat of antibiotic resistance. However, positioning MOFs on wound dressings is hindered and remains a significant challenge. Herein, a facile heterointerfacial engineering strategy was developed to tailor the "MOF armor" that adaptively weaponized the poly(ε-caprolactone) electrospun dressing with excellent bacteria-killing efficacy. Hydrophilic epitaxial crystallization to enhance the interfacial wettability is the key to induce the uniform seeding of Cu2+ and thus to generate a compact

Endoscopic Ultrasound-Guided Drainage of Pelvic Fluid Collections with Lumen-Apposing Metal Stents.

INTRODUCTION: A pelvic abscess is a potential life-threatening condition that should be managed conservatively whenever possible. Currently, computed tomography or ultrasound-guided percutaneous drainage is still the gold standard approach for pelvic fluid collections (PFCs) requiring intervention. More recently, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) drainage using lumen-apposing metal stents (LAMSs) has been used off-label in PFCs with similar efficacy, a favorable safety profile, better quality of life, and generally a shorter duration of treatment when compared to the gold standard treatment. METHOD

Engineering M2-type macrophages with a metal polyphenol network for peripheral artery disease treatment.

Functional cell treatment for critical limb ischemia is limited by cell viability loss and dysfunction resulting from a harmful ischemic microenvironment. Metal-polyphenol networks have emerged as novel cell delivery vehicles for protecting cells from the detrimental ischemic microenvironment and prolonging the survival rate of cells in the ischemic microenvironment. M2 macrophages are closely related to tissue repair, and they secrete anti-inflammatory factors that contribute to lesion repair. However, these cells are easily metabolized in the body with low efficiency. Herein, M2 macrophages

Wildland-urban interface wildfire increases metal contributions to stormwater runoff in Paradise, California.

The 2018 Camp Fire was a large late-year (November) wildfire that produced an urban firestorm in the Town of Paradise, California, USA, and destroyed more than 18 000 structures. Runoff from burned wildland areas is known to contain ash, which can transport contaminants including metals into nearby watersheds. However, due to historically infrequent occurrences, the effect of wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires, such as the Camp Fire, on surface water quality has not been well-characterized. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of widespread urban burning on surface water quality in
