The effects of different low doses of gamma irradiation on polyaniline-zinc oxide composite thin films were studied. The structural and optical properties of the sample were investigated using X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The variation in the structural and optical properties shown in this analysis will be helpful in correlating the properties with low-dose radiation dosimetry.

Small bowel obstruction is a frequently encountered condition throughout emergency departments and accounts for a large number of surgical hospital admissions. Reported therapies for primary pterygium have included surgical excision with or without adjunct radiation, antimitotic agents, and conjunctival transplants. The effectiveness of these strategies may be limited by recurrences, side effects of the treatment, or expensive and time-consuming procedures. We report the results of using thermal cautery to treat primary pterygium in three patients. In all cases the pterygia were successfully eliminated without recurrence.

Ultraviolet radiation in the 2850 to 3150 angstrom range can produce abnormal cutaneous reactions and exacerbation of systemic manifestations in some cases of subacute and acute systemic lupus erythematosus. It may also be responsible for cutaneous lesions and systemic involvement in rare cases of chronic discoid lupus erythematosus--probably those with disseminated lesions. The pathophysiological mechanism producing these photobiological effects in lupus erythematosus remains unknown.

BACKGROUND: The cumulative effect of solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is responsible for the worldwide increase in non-melanoma skin cancer, a category that includes squamous cell carcinoma and its precursors (the actinic keratoses) as well as basal-cell carcinoma.
