Movement analysis in neonates with spina bifida aperta.

INTRODUCTION: In neonates with spina bifida aperta (SBA), leg movements by myotomes caudal to the meningomyelocele (MMC) are transiently obs … ed for concurrency between leg movements caudal to the MMC and GMs. To address the integrity of the reflex arc in spinal segments (at, or) caudal to the MMC, tendon leg reflexes were assessed during the first postnatal week. RESULTS: At postnatal day 1, leg movements caudal to the MMC concurred with GMs in 12 of 13 infants. Isolated leg movements were o …

Quantitative electromyography of the anal sphincter after uncomplicated vaginal delivery.

OBJECTIVE: Fecal incontinence in women is thought to be associated with sphincter laceration or pudendal nerve damage. A prolonged pudendal … uantification measurements, endoanal ultrasonography, pudendal nerve terminal motor latency, sacral reflexes, and concentric needle EMG using multiple motor unit action potential analysis. RESULTS: A mean of 11.5 (standard deviation [sd] 1.1) weeks had elapsed since first vaginal deliveries in the postpartum group. The mean fetal weight at delivery was …

Role of vasopressin in neurocardiogenic responses to hemorrhage in conscious rats.

Vasovagal reflexes, such as hypotension and bradycardia, are induced by rapid hemorrhage and mimic neurocardiogenic reflexes in mammals. We examined the role of vasopressin in the neurocardiogenic responses to mild, rapid hemorrhage (1 mL/100 g for 30 seconds) and severe hemorrhage (1 mL/100 g body wt for 30 seconds repeated three times at 11-minute intervals) in homozygous Brattleboro and Long-Evans rats. Mild, rapid hemorrhage induced severe bradycardia and hypotension only in Long-Evans rats. Exogenous vasopressin (1.85 pmol/kg per minute for 1 hour) restored both the bradycardic and hypote…

Breaking down a gut-to-brain circuit that prevents malabsorption.

The ileal brake is an important reflex that ensures proper absorption of nutrients. This involves intestinal GLP-1 release, which recruits an enteric-sympathetic-spinal pathway to inhibit gastric motility and appetite. This visceral alarm system could be targeted to treat obesity and gastrointestinal dysfunction.

Reducing Speed and Sight: How Adaptive Is Post-Error Slowing?

After errors, decision boundaries change, which results in post-error slowing of decisions. Purcell and Kiani (2016) report simultaneously decreased sensitivity to sensory information counteracts post-error increases in accuracy. Early post-error adjustments reflect a general orienting reflex rather than goal-directed adaptation.

Transient blepharospasm secondary to unilateral striatal infarction.

We report on a patient who presented a transient eyelid motor disorder characterized by bilateral reflex blepharospasm as the main clinical manifestation of a right-sided striatal infarction. This case emphasizes the role of the nondominant striatum in the pathophysiology of eyelid motor abnormalities.

[Characteristics of the different variants of the complex treatment of stomach ulcer].

The eradication therapy increases the speed of cicatrisation of ulcers in the gastroduodenal zones in infected patients. The best method to increase the efficiency of ulcer cicatrisation is reflex therapy for patients at the age of 22-50 years and laser therapy for older patients.

[Diagnostic measures in anal and rectal prolapse].

As incontinence and outlet obstruction are major problems for patients with anal and rectal prolapse, the following diagnostic procedures are used in addition to the usual examination to plan a more selective therapy and followup: measurement of anal pressure, EMG, anal reflex latency and proctogram.

Diagnosis of Menière's disease.

Stapedius-reflex measurement and the glycerol-test in combination with pure tone audiogram and speech-audiogram are reliable methods for an exact diagnosis of Menière's disease. For differential diagnosis one should know the so called "tensor tympani syndrome" which is discussed in this paper.

The various types of neurogenic bladder dysfunction: an update of current therapeutic concepts.

Increased experience with treatment strategies developed during the last 10 years in the field of neurourology justifies an update of current therapeutic concepts. Based on a rather simple, but clinically useful, classification of detrusor-sphincter dysfunction the therapeutic concepts now available for four prototypes of detrusor-sphincter dysfunction are discussed. (1) For the combination of a hyperreflexive detrusor with a hyperreflexive (spastic) sphincter, characteristic for the reflex- and the uninhibited neuropathic bladder, detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia (DSD) is still the greatest pro…

Evaluation of spasticity: IFCN Handbook Chapter.

There is no generally accepted definition of spasticity, but hyperexcitable stretch reflexes, exaggerated tendon jerks, clonus, spasms, cramps, increased resistance to passive joint movement, sustained involuntary muscle activity and aberrant muscle activation, including co-contraction of antagonist muscles are all signs and symptoms which are usually associated clinically to the term spasticity. This review describes how biomechanical and electrophysiological techniques may be used to provide quantitative and objective measures of each of these signs and symptoms. The review further describes…

A review of the neural basis underlying the acoustic startle response with a focus on recent developments in mammals.

The startle response consists of whole-body muscle contractions, eye-blink, accelerated heart rate, and freezing in response to a strong, sudden stimulus. It is evolutionarily preserved and can be observed in any animal that can perceive sensory signals, indicating the important protective function of startle. Startle response measurements and its alterations have become a valuable tool for exploring sensorimotor processes and sensory gating, especially in the context of pathologies of psychiatric disorders. The last reviews on the neural substrates underlying acoustic startle were published a

The Effects of Hypoxia on Middle Ear Pressure Regulation.

Background: Middle ear (ME) pressure regulation has been suggested as a physiological mechanism that maintains pressure equilibrium between the ME and the ambient environment. This mechanism would be based on a complex sensorineural reflex loop composed of mechanoreceptors, an integrative center, and efferent neural pathways. Our aim was to demonstrate that hypoxic conditions, which would inhibit mechanoreceptors in general, similarly participate in the inhibition of the opening of the Eustachian tube (ET), and thus, to suggest that such receptors are involved in the overall regulation of ME p…

Acquired nystagmus.

Nystagmus is the repetitive to and fro movement of the eyes, which may be physiological or pathological. The movements can be horizontal, vertical, torsional or a combination of these movements. It starts by a slow movement of the eye away from the visual target. The second movement brings the eye back to the visual target. If this second movement is quick, the nystagmus is called jerk nystagmus. If the second movement is slow, the nystagmus is said to be pendular. Maintaining steady gaze is dependent upon visual fixation, the vestibulo-ocular reflex and the gaze-holding neural integrator syst…
